Biting the hand that feeds you: Management of human and animal bites.

Bites from animal and humans represent a very small proportion of all the patients presenting to emergency departments, However, they require prompt medical and surgical intervention in order to minimise the risk of infection, that may lead to limb and life-threatening complications. In this review article we synthesise the existing literature for treatment of human and animal bites and offer practical considerations when managing bite injuries.

Surgical treatment of human bites of the upper eyelid.

Human bites of the upper eyelid are extremely rare. Few reports have been published on the surgical management of such injuries, and they have dealt mainly with those cases in which the avulsed tissue segment is available for reconstructive surgery. This article reports on a case of human bite injury of the upper eyelid with more than 50% full-thickness loss of tissue, in which the missing segment was not available for reconstruction.

Human bites in the classroom: incidence, treatment, and complications.

It has been estimated that at least one half of the population will experience some type of bite in their lifetime. Human bites are the third leading cause of all bites seen in hospital emergency departments after dog and cat bites. Human bites can be the source of exposure to body fluids, transmission of communicable diseases, infections ranging from cellulitis to osteomyelitis, and joint deformity from septic arthritis. Approximately 10-15% of human bites will become infected. In the school setting, a teacher or other staff member can sustain a human bite while trying to protect a student fr

Animal and Human Bite Wounds.

BACKGROUND: 30,000 to 50,000 injuries are caused by bites in Germany every year. Dog and cat bites are common, human bites relatively rare. 25% of the victims are under age 6, and 34% are aged 6 to 17. METHODS: This review is based on pertinent literature retrieved by a selective search and on the authors' clinical and scientific experience. RESULTS: In small children, most bite wounds are on the head and neck; in older children and adolescents, most are on the limbs. Bite injuries range from trivial ones needing no medical intervention to major soft-tissue defects with the loss of functiona

Involuntary human bite to the eyebrow.

Human bites to the face are very rare and only one case of human bite to the eyebrow has so far been reported. The final functional and cosmetic result of reconstruction mainly depends on the size of the injury, the viability of the tissue and the promptness of surgical intervention. We here present one case of human bite to the eyebrow that resulted in complete avulsion and loss of tissue due to delayed presentation to the hospital. The lesion was reconstructed in two stages with good functional and decent cosmetic outcome. Unfortunately long term follow up was not possible for this patient.

Application of NGS Technology in Osteomyelitis Caused by Human Bites.

Osteomyelitis caused by human bites is a severe and complex polymicrobial infection that is often complicated by delayed diagnosis and the high false-negative rate of conventional cultures. This case series retrospectively analyzed four cases of human bite-induced osteomyelitis to evaluate the clinical utility of next-generation sequencing (NGS) for the diagnosis of complex infections. Conventional intraoperative bacterial cultures were negative in two of the four cases, limiting pathogen-directed antimicrobial therapy. In contrast, NGS identified microbial organisms in all four patients and r

Bacteroides pyogenes causing serious human wound infection from animal bites.

Bacteroides pyogenes is part of the normal oral flora of domestic animals. There is one previous report of human infection, with B. pyogenes bacteremia following a cat bite (Madsen 2011). We report seven severe human infections where B. pyogenes was identified by Bruker matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDTI-TOF MS), but not by VITEK MS and was misidentified by VITEK ANC card.

Characteristic and outcomes of human and animal bites in Malawi.

INTRODUCTION: Bites are an important contributor to traumatic injury worldwide. In low- and middle-income countries, data regarding bite injuries outside of rabies is limited. Therefore, we sought to describe the injury characteristics and outcomes of bites in Lilongwe, Malawi, and determine risk factors for animals and human bites. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of the Kamuzu Central Hospital trauma registry from 2008-2018. We performed Bivariate analyses comparing bite to non-bite trauma and human to animal bites. Multivariable Poisson regression modeling then estimated risk

Lack of transmission of HIV through human bites and scratches.

To examine the relative risk of transmission of the human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV) through bites and scratches, we studied 198 health care workers, 30 of whom were traumatized in this fashion while caring for an aggressive AIDS patient. This violent patient frequently bit or scratched others, his mouth had blood and saliva, while his fingernails were at times soiled with semen, feces, and urine. He was HIV antibody and antigen positive. Although HIV was recovered from his peripheral blood lymphocytes, after 2.5 years of serial follow-up, all traumatized personnel were clinically normal, n

The management of animal and human bite wounds.

Every year, large numbers of people are bitten by animals, and a smaller number by humans. The consequences can be serious. However, better health education to help prevent bites and teaching a bite-avoidance strategy when someone is being treated for a bite may help to reduce the problem. This article discusses treatment options and the possible complications of bite wounds.

[Animal and human bites : what to do and what to know ?].

Animal and human bites are a common cause of admission to the emergency room and the infections are common, although they are often trivialized. Complications can range from simple cellulitis to septic shock especially in asplenic patients with Capnoyctophaga canimorsus infection. Other less common infections are possible such as rat-bite fever, leptospirosis, tularemia, and evaluation of post-exposure prophylaxis (anti-tetanus, anti-rabies, HIV, HBV) is essential. Antibiotic prophylaxis remains controversial but is recommended for certain groups of patients and must cover common bite pathogen

Capybara Bites: Report of Human Injury Caused by a Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris.

BACKGROUND: Health care demand due to animal bites is frequent, especially in the emergency department (ED). In addition to the physical trauma caused by bites, one should be concerned with infectious diseases that can be transmitted. The range of the lesions depends on the animal species. Bites of Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris (capybaras) in humans are relatively uncommon. Capybaras are docile animals; however, their large rodent incisive teeth could cause serious injury. Localized care, antibiotic therapy when necessary, careful examination of the structures, tetanus and rabies immunization as i
