Venomous bites and stings in the tropical world.

Snakes of the families Viperidae and Elapidae are responsible for the high incidence of morbidity and mortality after snake bites in countries of West Africa, the Indian subcontinent, South-East Asia, New Guinea and Latin America. Envenoming can cause local effects, notably tissue necrosis; and systemic effects, including paralysis, haemostatic disturbances, shock, increased capillary permeability, myocardial damage, rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure. Specific hyperimmune serum (antivenom) is the mainstay of medical treatment for severe envenoming. Ancillary treatments such as assisted ve

Bites and stings of uncommon arthropods. 1. Spiders.

In addition to the Hymenoptera, less common arthropods, such as spiders and reduviids, can inflict injuries of medical importance. Identification of the source of the bite or sting may be difficult but is essential to proper treatment. Part 1 of this article describes recognition and treatment of the bites of various spiders; part 2, beginning on page 107, considers bites and stings of other arthropods.

Arthropod bites, stings, and infestations: their prevention and treatment.

Readily available information as to the management of arthropod bites, stings, and infestations is important to have but often difficult to find. This article brings such information together in one reference for use by the practicing pediatrician, dermatologist, and family practitioner. Preventive measures are stressed and therapy is outlined for each entity; the rationale for many of the interventions is discussed. It is not the intent of this paper to cover each subject comprehensively.

Bites and Stings: Exotic Causes of Stroke in Asia.

BACKGROUND: Many unusual and fascinating causes of stroke are seen in Asia. Although rarely encountered in the Western world, such cases are seen not so infrequently by neurologists, physicians, and other healthcare workers in Asian countries. This article highlights some of these intriguing causes of stroke such as snakebite, scorpion stings, and bee and wasp stings. SUMMARY: Snakebite is a neglected tropical disease of global importance affecting over 5 million people each year, and scorpion stings and bee and wasp stings affect over a million people worldwide every year. Strokes due to the

Systemic immediate allergic reactions to arthropod stings and bites.

Most of the encounters with biting and stinging insects result in more or less pronounced localized reactions. Typically, urticarial wheals and papular reactions are observed. Less often local bullous or hemorrhagic or disseminated papular reactions, particularly in children and immunologically naive adults, may be seen. With the exception of bee and wasp venom allergies, immediate-type allergic reactions to arthropod stings and bites are rare. Systemic IgE-mediated hypersensitivity has also been reported from additional hymenoptera species, e.g. hornets, bumble bees and ants. Rare are systemi

Bites and stings from venomous animals: a global overview.

Venomous and poisonous animals are a significant cause of global morbidity and mortality. This Seminar will cover selected aspects of these animals, their venoms/poisons, and their clinical impact on humankind, from a global perspective, but with a distinctive Australian flavor and a clinical emphasis. Venomous snakes are found throughout most of the world, including many oceans, and have evolved a variety of highly effective toxins and methods of delivery. Their impact on humans is considerable, most current data suggesting they cause in excess of 3 million bites per year with more than 150,0

Infrared thermography to diagnose and manage venomous animal bites and stings.

INTRODUCTION: Infrared imaging (IR) is a noninvasive technique that quantifies body surface temperature, producing a digital color image. IR has been used to study diseases in which skin temperature can reflect the presence of inflammation. METHODS: This was an observational pilot study of eight patients envenomed by snakes, spiders, and scorpions. All patients were examined using a thermal camera. RESULTS: In all cases, we obtained infrared images that corroborated clinical findings indicating localized effects of venom, specifically inflammation. CONCLUSIONS: IR has potential for use as a

Neurological effects of venomous bites and stings: snakes, spiders, and scorpions.

Snake and spider bites, as well as scorpion sting envenoming, are neglected diseases affecting millions of people all over the world. Neurological complications vary according to the offending animal, and are often directly related to toxic effects of the venom, affecting the central nervous system, the neuromuscular transmission, the cardiovascular system, or the coagulation cascade. Snake bite envenoming may result in stroke or muscle paralysis. Metalloproteinases and other substances (common in vipers and colubrids) have anticoagulant or procoagulant activity, and may induce ischemic or hem

A review of venomous animal bites and stings in pregnant patients.

This is a review of Medline and PubMed articles on venomous animal bites and stings during pregnancy reported in English literature from 1966 to 2002. Eighty-five venomous snakebites were reported in pregnant women. Although there are frequent anecdotal reports of scorpion stings in pregnant women, few case reports are documented. Other venomous animal bites or stings to pregnant women that have been reported include spiders, jellyfish, and insects, and these are described. Adverse reproductive and teratogenic effects of venoms on gravid animals are also briefly reviewed. Although uncommon, ve…

Use of stun guns for venomous bites and stings: a review.

During the past 2 decades, articles suggesting that stun guns be utilized to treat venomous bites and stings have appeared in both the lay and medical press. Although never widely considered to be standard therapy for venomous bites and stings, stun guns are still considered to be a treatment option by some medical practitioners and outdoor enthusiasts. A Medline search was performed using these terms: venomous bites, venomous stings, snake bites, spider bites, electrical, stun gun, high voltage electricity, low amperage electricity, direct current, and shock therapy. Articles selected include…

Insects as allergen injectants, severe reactions to bites and stings of arthropods.

Arthropods capable of penetrating human skin often cause severe local and systemic reactions. Local reactions suggest delayed hypersensitivity while systemic symptoms resemble more the anaphylactic shock in animals. The nature of the antigen remains obscure but predominant evidence suggests its presence throughout the entire organism. Positive history of hypersensitivity to insect injectants was obtained in approximately 20 per cent of persons in the course of routine interviews of 1,078 patients. Repeated bites and stings at long or irregular intervals often induce a state of hypersensitivity…

[Venomous Animals in the Portuguese Territory: Clinical Management of Bites and Stings].

There are many native species of animals with the potential to cause severe disease in Portugal. Of the four clinically relevant snake species, the vipers (Vipera latastei and Vipera seoanei) are the most concerning. They can cause severe disease and require in-hospital management, monitoring and specific treatment, including the administration of anti-snake venom serum. The Malpolon monspessulanus and Macroprotodon brevis snakes cause mostly localized clinical manifestations, which do not require specific treatment. Only a minority of the spider species in Portugal possess chelicerae (mouthpa

[Mortality from snake bites, wild and domestic animal bites and arthropod stings in the savannah zone of eastern Senegal].

From 1976 to 1999, we conducted a prospective study of overall and cause-specific mortality among the population of 42 villages of south-eastern Senegal. Of 4,228 deaths registered during this period, 26 were brought on by snakebites, 4 by invertebrate stings and 8 by other wild or domestic animals. The average annual mortality rate from snakebite was 14 deaths per 100,000 population. Among persons aged 1 year or more, 0.9% (26/2,880) of deaths were caused by snakebite and this cause represented 28% (26/94) of the total number of deaths by accident. We also investigated the snake fauna of the

Animal bites and stings reported by United States poison control centers, 2001-2005.

OBJECTIVE: There is not a single data source for information on the extent of nonfatal injuries inflicted by animals. Although individuals bitten or stung by animals may not visit a health care provider, they may call poison control centers (PCCs) for information. These centers are one source of information on the frequency of occurrence of injuries from animals. METHODS: The American Association of Poison Control Centers compiles an annual report of exposure calls to various agents, including chemicals, medications, animal bites and stings, plants, and use of antivenoms from their network of…

Venomous animal bites and stings in active component U.S. service members, 2008-2023.

This study characterizes all medically diagnosed bites and stings in active component service members (ACSMs) from snakes, venomous fish, other venomous marine animals, arthropods, and insects identified through an evaluation of medical data from the Defense Medical Surveillance System (DMSS). Incident trends were determined from 2008 through 2023, and incidence rates (IRs) and incidence rate ratios (IRRs) were calculated. In total, there were 42,552 venomous bite and sting medical encounters among 39,201 ACSMs, resulting in an IR of 19.3 cases per 10,000 person-years (p-yrs) during the survei…
