Uterine fibroids and Black people of African descent globally: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence suggests that when adjusted for age and other factors such as Body Mass Index, age of first pregnancy, years since last pregnancy and alcohol consumption, Black women are three times more likely to suffer from fibroids compared with the general population. When compared with the general population, Black women experience larger uterine fibroids with an earlier onset and more frequent and severe symptoms debilitating symptoms. Reported symptoms include pelvic pain, bladder issues, and heavy and/or abnormal menstrual bleeding. For Black women in perimenopause or menopause,

Doulas as Facilitators to Black Birthing People's Needs in Pennsylvania in the Context of Medicaid Coverage.

INTRODUCTION: Longstanding racial inequities in maternal mortality require tailored approaches to improving outcomes for Black birthing people. Doulas provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support and have been shown to improve perinatal outcomes, particularly for Black birthing people. In response, some states have implemented Medicaid doula benefits. In January 2025, Pennsylvania-where ∼35% of births are Medicaid-covered-launched such a policy, allowing certified doulas to enroll as Medicaid providers. METHODS: As part of a larger mixed-methods study on the effects of Me

Implementation of a novel strategy to increase participation of Black and Hispanic people in parkinsonism research.

INTRODUCTION: Black and Hispanic people are underrepresented in parkinsonism research leading to critical knowledge gaps and reduced quality of care. METHODS: We developed a novel, comprehensive clinical registry in which research eligibility, interest, and participation are actively tracked for all patients at our site to reduce selection bias and streamline recruitment. We also implemented targeted approaches to reduce psychosocial and sociocultural barriers to research participation of Black and Hispanic people. We then performed a retrospective chart review to test the hypothesis that the

Social determinants of health and long-term conditions in people of Black African and Black Caribbean ethnicity living with HIV in London: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: People living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are disproportionately impacted by socioeconomic deprivation and are at increased risk of developing other long-term conditions (LTCs). These illnesses require transformative action to tackle the adverse effects on their health. Data on lived experiences of LTCs among people living with HIV of Black African and Black Caribbean ethnicities are sparse, and how people with LTCs are impacted by social determinants of health (SDoH). METHODS: Through a phenomenological study design this qualitative study, conducted in 2022, comprised

Structural Racism and Use of Labor Neuraxial Analgesia Among Non-Hispanic Black Birthing People.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between structural racism and labor neuraxial analgesia use. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed 2017 U.S. natality data for non-Hispanic Black and White birthing people. The exposure was a multidimensional structural racism index measured in the county of the delivery hospital. It was calculated as the mean of three Black-White inequity ratios (ratios for lower education, unemployment, and incarceration in jails) and categorized into terciles, with the third tercile corresponding to high structural racism. The outcome was the labor neuraxial anal

Associations between social determinants of health and comorbidity and multimorbidity in people of black ethnicities with HIV.

OBJECTIVE: Social determinants of health (SDH) are important determinants of long-term conditions and multimorbidity in the general population. The intersecting relationship between SDH and multimorbidity in people with HIV remains poorly studied. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study investigating the relationships between eight socio-economic parameters and prevalent comorbidities of clinical significance and multimorbidity in adults of African ancestry with HIV aged 18-65 years in South London, UK. METHODS: Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate associations between SDH

Is black always the opposite of white? An investigation on the comprehension of antonyms in people with schizophrenia and in healthy participants.

The present investigation sought to expand our understanding of the cognitive processes underlying the recognition of antonyms and to evaluate whether these processes differed in patients with schizophrenia and in healthy controls. Antonymy is the most robust of the lexico-semantic relations and is relevant to both the mental organization of the lexicon and the organization of coherent discourse, as attested by the resurgence of interest in antonymy in the linguistic and psychological domains. In contrast, the vast literature on semantic processing in schizophrenia almost ignored antonymy. In

The importance of need-altruism and kin-altruism to blood donor behaviour for black and white people.

BACKGROUND: Need-altruism (a preference to help people in need) and kin-altruism (a preference to help kin over non-kin) underlie two hypotheses for voluntary blood donation: (i) Need-altruism underlies motivations for volunteer blood donation and (ii) Black people express a stronger preference for kin-altruism, which is a potential barrier to donation. This paper tests these hypotheses and explores how need- and kin-altruism are associated with wider altruistic motivations, barriers, and strategies to encourage donation. METHODS: We assessed need- and kin-altruism, other mechanisms-of-altrui

Place-Based Structural Disadvantage, Lethal Police Violence, and Adverse Birth Outcomes Among Black Birthing People.

Structural racism and lethal police violence shape community environments, particularly in urban and urban-adjacent contexts, and may influence reproductive health. While disparities in birth outcomes among Black populations are well documented, fewer studies have examined how these structural and state-linked exposures jointly pattern risk for adverse birth outcomes. Using 2020 National Center for Health Statistics natality data and Mapping Police Violence data (2015-2019), we analyzed associations between county-level lethal police violence, a multidomain. Structural Racism Exposure Index (S

Placental miRNAs Targeting Cellular Stress Response Pathways Are Highly Expressed in Non-Hispanic Black People.

Non-Hispanic Black (NHB) people have a 2.5-fold higher risk of maternal mortality when compared to non-Hispanic White (NHW) people. Neonates of NHB people are more likely to be born preterm and small for gestational age, which may be driven by structural racism. The placenta is very sensitive to the maternal environment and may play a critical role in the translation of environmental stressors to pregnancy outcomes. Our aim was to assess the placental miRNA expression profile in both NHB and NHW people and the association between differentially expressed miRNAs and pregnancy outcomes. Placenta

Strokes among black people in Harare, Zimbabwe: results of computed tomography and associated risk factors.

Computed tomography was performed and risk factors evaluated in 100 consecutive adult patients presenting to the two teaching hospitals in Harare with a clinical diagnosis of stroke. The mean age of the patients was 52; only 28 were 65 or older. Non-stroke lesions were found in seven patients and were predicted by a recent history of convulsions (p less than 0.0001). Five lesions (four subdural haematomas and one cerebral cysticercosis) were remediable. Hypertension was present in 27 (93%) of the 29 patients with cerebral haemorrhage and in 49 (53%) of the 93 patients with stroke lesions. In 2

BLACK-ARTS: a qualitative study exploring the insights of black young people with psychiatric disorders and the uses of creative arts therapies to improve mental well-being.

BACKGROUND: Black people experience persistent inequalities in mental health outcomes, access and care quality compared with their white counterparts. These disparities are compounded by structural racism and a lack of culturally competent care within National Health Service (NHS) services. Creative arts therapies (CATs), including music, art, dance and drama therapy, may offer culturally relevant, non-verbal approaches to mental health support for this population. OBJECTIVE: To explore how black young people with mental health challenges and NHS clinicians perceive the usefulness and cultura

"Racial mortality inversion": Black-white disparities in mortality among people experiencing homelessness in the United States.

Disparities in mortality between Black and White people have long been observed. These disparities persist at all income levels. However, similar patterns in racial mortality disparities are not observed among people experiencing homelessness. Instead, studies in a handful of cities show a reversal in the Black-White mortality disparity in the United States: Black people experiencing homelessness are less likely to die compared to White people experiencing homelessness. We propose a theory of "racial mortality inversion" and test whether inverted Black-White mortality patterns are observable i
