Chronic urticaria associated with Blastocystis hominis infection.

Urticaria is a skin rash with several etiologic factors, including infectious agents. Blastocystis hominis is an intestinal protozoan parasite that has been linked to urticaria and skin lesions. The aim of this work was to investigate the association between B. hominis infection and chronic urticaria. In a case-control study, stool samples were obtained from 94 patients with chronic urticaria as case group and 285 healthy individuals as control group. Urticaria activity score 7 (UAS7) was used to score the severity of urticaria, classified as mild, moderate and intense. All stool samples under

Treatment failure in patients with chronic Blastocystis infection.

This article reports long-term infection and treatment failure in 18 symptomatic individuals infected with Blastocystis spp. Patients were initially treated with either metronidazole, iodoquinol or triple combination therapy consisting of nitazoxanide, furazolidone and secnidazole. Following treatment, resolution of clinical symptoms did not occur and follow-up testing revealed ongoing infection with the same subtype. Patients then underwent secondary treatment with a variety of antimicrobial agents but remained symptomatic with Blastocystis spp. still present in faeces. Sequencing of the SSU

Morphology, histochemistry and infectivity of Blastocystis hominis cyst.

Different morphological forms of Blastocystis hominis had been identified in human stool samples. These included both cystic and trophic stages. The latter was induced to encyst by keeping them in potassium dichromate solution for two weeks. Suspected of being the infective stage, cysts were studied in more detail as regards their morphology using both light and electron microscopy. Histochemistry and infectivity studies were also carried out. Light microscopy revealed the cysts to be ovoid or round 5-7 microm with thick cyst wall and a single nucleus. The induced cysts were morphologically si

Effect of trimethoprim-sulfamethaxazole in Blastocystis hominis infection.

OBJECTIVE: Blastocystis hominis (B. hominis) is a common intestinal parasite that has long been considered nonpathogenic. Recently there have been many reports supporting a role for the organism as a potential pathogen. We performed a study to examine the pathogenicity of B. hominis and the effect of trimethoprim-sulfamethaxazole (TMP-SMX) on this organism. METHODS: Stool samples of patients, who came to the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Celal Bayar University, were examined by direct wet-mount, trichrome staining, formalin-ethyl acetate concentration, and Kinyoun acid fast

Experimental Blastocystis hominis infection in laboratory mice.

Young (less than 8 weeks old) immunocompetent BALB/c mice became infected with Blastocystis hominis after inoculation of fecal cysts orally and of in vitro axenic-culture forms intracecally. This study confirmed that the fecal cyst was the form responsible for external transmission and that the mode of transmission was by the fecal-oral route. The infection was self-limiting and the infected BALB/c mice appeared normal except that some of them showed weight loss and lethargy. Both vacuolar and granular forms were found in the cecum, but only cyst forms were observed in the colon. Histological

Epidemiologic survey of Blastocystis hominis infection in Japan.

The incidence of Blastocystis hominis in a healthy population was determined by fecal examination of 6,422 Japanese and 54 resident non-Japanese who visited the St. Luke's International Hospital Health Screening Center for a routine medical check-up during a one-year period. Of the enrolled subjects, 30 Japanese (0.5%) and four non-Japanese (7.4%) had B. hominis in their stools. These individuals were asymptomatic except for one who reported flatus and one who reported mild abdominal discomfort. Statistical analysis indicated that the prevalence in the Japanese was lower than in the non-Japane

[Progress of researches on Blastocystis infections in humans and animals in China].

Blastocystis is a unicellular, anaerobic, intestinal protozoan that infects humans and a variety of animals, which is widely prevalent across the world. Blastocystis infections have been detected in healthy populations, children, students, outpatients and inpatients, as well as diarrhea patients in China. High prevalence of Blastocystis infections has been reported in immunocompromised patients, and relatively high prevalence was seen in individuals living in Guangxi and Yunnan regions. Based on the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene sequence, a total of 17 subtypes (ST1 to ST17) of B…

Mixed human intra- and inter-subtype infections with the parasite Blastocystis sp.

Because of their limitations, current subtyping methods likely underestimate mixed human intra- and inter-subtype infections with Blastocystis sp. leading to erroneous data in the context of epidemiological studies. We confirmed this hypothesis by the identification of several isolates belonging to three subtypes in a patient considered at high risk of mixed infection through her lifestyle in rural area and long history of travelling.

A possible link between subtype 2 and asymptomatic infections of Blastocystis hominis.

Blastocystis hominis is one of the most common eukaryotic organisms in the intestinal tract of humans, while its pathogenic potential is still controversial. A total of 286 stool samples obtained from adult and pediatric patients with or without gastrointestinal symptoms in two hospitals in Manisa, Turkey, were cultured to detect B. hominis infection. Forty-one and 51 isolates were obtained from the adults and children, respectively, and these isolates were subjected to subtyping by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with the known sequence-tagged site primers. The correlation between the genotyp

Prevalence of Blastocystis infection in patients with colorectal cancer in Taiwan.

Blastocystis sp., an understudied intestinal protozoan associated with gastrointestinal symptoms, has an unclear role in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer (CRC). Despite available international data, the epidemiology of Blastocystis infection in Taiwanese CRC patients has not been established. In this study, we investigated its prevalence by analyzing samples from 56 CRC patients at National Cheng Kung University Hospital from August 2021 to July 2022. The cohort consisted of 32 males (57.1%) and 24 females (42.9%) with a mean age of 62.2 ± 10.4 years. We found the overall prevalence of Bl

Visceral Leishmaniasis With Blastocystis Co-infection: A Case Report.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a form of leishmaniasis, which causes significant mortality if untreated. The coexistence of VL with Blastocystis infection has not been well-documented in the literature. In this paper, we present the case of a 72-year-old male who experienced four months of recurrent diarrhea and later developed weight loss, fever, night sweats, and pancytopenia. The stool ova and parasite (O&P) examination revealed Blastocystis spp. vacuolar bodies and he was treated with metronidazole which resolved the diarrhea but not other symptoms. Further evaluation, including an abdomin

A case report of Blastocystis infection and Steven Johnson's syndrome.

Blastocystis species (spp.) is an emerging pathogen. There are several unsolved issues linked to this parasite ranging from its nomenclature, commensal status, standardization of laboratory diagnostic methods, genotypes and treatment. Recently, there has been an increase in reports of Blastocystis spp. from symptomatic cases which provide enough evidence of its pathogenic potential. A range of signs and symptoms, from gastro-intestinal to cutaneous manifestations have been attributed to Blastocystis infection. Few reports have established an association between intestinal infection with Blasto

Epidemiologic Study of Blastocystis Infection in an Urban Community in the Philippines.

Blastocystis has been considered as the most common intestinal parasite in humans and has an augmented impact on public health. However, the prevalence of this parasite in the Philippines has not been determined. To contribute to a better understanding of the epidemiology of this infection, a cross-sectional study aimed at providing the first documented data on the prevalence and correlates, sociodemographic factors, hygiene practices, source of water supply, and dog ownership, associated with Blastocystis infection was carried out in randomly selected communities at Pateros, Metro Manila. Serologic response to Blastocystis hominis infection in asymptomatic individuals.

The pathogenic potential of Blastocystis hominis in the human intestine is subject to controversy because the organism has been found in both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. To help clarify this issue, we monitored the serologic response to the organism in B. hominis-infected individuals free of gastroenterologic disorders. 1) Serum antibodies to B. hominis were detected in 70% of infected asymptomatic individuals by an indirect immunofluorescence (IFA) test. 2) IFA and immunoelectron microscopy revealed that the antibody response was directed against a surface antigen(s) of the orga

[Advances in the research of comorbidity of Blastocystis hominis infections and other diseases].

Blastocystis hominis is a common intestinal protozoan parasite. Most individuals with B. hominis infections have no apparent clinical symptoms; however, a few patients, notably those with co-infections or impaired immune system function may present abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and even death. This paper reviews the co-infections of B. hominis and other pathogens and comorbidity of B. hominis infections and other diseases, so as to provide insights into the management of B. hominis infections.
