Dry eye disease and blinking behaviors: A narrative review of methodologies for measuring blink dynamics and inducing blink response.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a leading cause of ophthalmology clinical encounters with prevalence ranging from 8.7% to 64% in various populations. Blinking is an endogenous process to refresh the tear film, clear debris and maintain quality vision. Altered blinking behavior is a common feature of DED and is implicated in the pathology of the disease. However, lack of a comprehensive review on the relationship between altered blinking behavior and DED is notable in the literature. Blinking behavior may be an effect of DED due to an unstable tear film sensitizing a motor response or be its cause due

Female frogs communicate with males through blinking.

Blinking is a behavior unique to animal taxa with motile eyelids, such as most amphibians and reptiles as well as all birds and mammals1. Eyelid movement has physiological functions, such as lubricating the cornea and washing away dust, but its potential signaling functions are not well understood1,2. The use of eyeblinks as a social signal is currently thought to be restricted to some primates, especially humans and their companion animals, but has not been verified in other taxa1,3,4. Here, through field observation and experiments, we demonstrate that female concave-eared torrent frogs (Odo

Blinking-blepharospasm after long-term neuroleptic treatment.

A patient is described who developed frequent blinking and blepharospasm after long-term treatment with trifluoperazine, whose condition improved dramatically after the cessation of the drug. The implications of this for our understanding of the manifestations and natural course of the late-onset side-effects of neuroleptic drugs are discussed. This case further supports the role of dopaminergic mechanisms in the aetiology of Meige's syndrome, which has blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia as its main manifestations.

Is increased blinking a form of blepharospasm?

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether increased blink rate (BR) is part of the clinical spectrum of primary blepharospasm (BSP). METHODS: We enrolled 40 patients (16 patients with an increased BR but without typical orbicularis oculi [OO] spasms, and 24 patients with typical involuntary OO spasms) and 18 healthy subjects. The BR, blink reflex recovery cycle, and somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT) were tested in patients and controls. RESULTS: Patients who had typical OO spasms had an altered R2 recovery cycle whereas those who had an increased BR alo

The attentional blink in amblyopia.

Amblyopia is a disorder of visual acuity in one eye, thought to arise from suppression by the other eye during development of the visual cortex. In the attentional blink, the second of two targets (T2) in a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) stream is difficult to detect and identify when it appears shortly but not immediately after the first target (T1). We investigated the attentional blink seen through amblyopic eyes and found that it was less finely tuned in time than when the 12 amblyopic observers viewed the stimuli with their preferred eyes. T2 performance was slightly better throu

Blink reflex in patients with hemispheric cerebrovascular accident (CVA). Blink reflex in CVA.

A blink reflex consists of an early unilateral component, R1, and a late bilateral component, R2. During an acute phase of hemispheric cerebrovascular accident, R1 and R2 were abnormal in 30 and 50 of 66 patients, respectively. Paired stimuli usually corrected R1 but not R2, which was profoundly suppressed. The discrepancy between polysynaptic R2 and oligosynaptic R1 indicates a greater disfacilitation at the level of interneurons than at the motoneuron, which serves as the final common path. Abnormality of R2 occurred bilaterally with stimulation on the affected side of face and contralateral

Effect of shell thickness and composition on blinking suppression and the blinking mechanism in 'giant' CdSe/CdS nanocrystal quantum dots.

We recently developed an inorganic shell approach for suppressing blinking in nanocrystal quantum dots (NQDs) that has the potential to dramatically improve the utility of these fluorophores for single-NQD tracking of individual molecules in cell biology. Here, we consider in detail the effect of shell thickness and composition on blinking suppression, focusing on the CdSe/CdS core/shell system. We also discuss the blinking mechanism as understood through profoundly altered blinking statistics. We clarify the dependence of blinking behavior and photostability on shell thickness, as well as on

Spontaneous Blinking Kinematics After Frontalis Muscle Flap Advancement.

PURPOSE: To measure the spontaneous blinking metrics after blepharoptosis correction with frontalis muscle flap advancement. METHODS: A video system was employed to measure the amplitude and velocity of spontaneous blinking of 24 eyelids after the frontalis muscle flap surgery for blepharoptosis correction. A control group with no eyelid disorders was also measured. The data of 13 eyelids who had frontalis slings with autogenous fascia, which were previously collected with the same method in another study, were used for comparison. Digital images were used to measure the superior margin refle

Accelerated MINFLUX Nanoscopy, through Spontaneously Fast-Blinking Fluorophores.

The introduction of MINFLUX nanoscopy allows single molecules to be localized with one nanometer precision in as little as one millisecond. However, current applications have so far focused on increasing this precision by optimizing photon collection, rather than minimizing the localization time. Concurrently, commonly used fluorescent switches are specifically designed for stochastic methods (e.g., STORM), optimized for a high photon yield and rather long on-times (tens of milliseconds). Here, accelerated MINFLUX nanoscopy with up to a 30-fold gain in localization speed is presented. The impr

Spontaneous, Voluntary, and Reflex Blinking in Clinical Practice.

Blinking is one of the motor acts performed more frequently by healthy human subjects. It involves the reciprocal action of at least two muscles: the orbicularis oculi shows a brief phasic activation while the levator palpebrae shows transient inhibition. In clinical practice, noninvasive recording of the orbicularis oculi activity is sufficient to obtain useful information for electrodiagnostic testing. Blinking can be spontaneous, voluntary, or reflex. Although the analysis of spontaneous blinks can already furnish interesting data, most studies are based on reflex blinking. This article is

Optimisation of blinking exercises for dry eye disease.

PURPOSE: Blinking exercises can reduce the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease, but the optimum technique, repetitions and repeats/day are unclear. Hence, this study used an instructional app to assess the best routine for blinking exercises. METHOD: In the optimisation stage, dryness symptoms with the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI-6-item), Symptom Assessment Questionnaire iN Dry Eye (SANDE), and the time the eyes were comfortable for after a blink (the Blink Test) were assessed in 98 participants with dry eye before and after 2 weeks of blinking exercises, as well as 2 weeks after com

Unilateral Blinking: Insights from Stereo-EEG and Tractography.

To study the neuroanatomical correlate of involuntary unilateral blinking in humans, using the example of patients with focal epilepsy. Patients with drug resistant focal epilepsy undergoing presurgical evaluation with stereotactically implanted EEG-electrodes (sEEG) were recruited from the local epilepsy monitoring unit. Only patients showing ictal unilateral blinking or unilateral blinking elicited by direct electrical stimulation were included (n = 16). MRI and CT data were used for visualization of the electrode positions. In two patients, probabilistic tractography with seeding from the r

The clinical and experimental significance of blinking behavior.

Evaluations of tear functions frequently involve some form of voluntary control over blink behaviour. To the degree that voluntary control of blinking risks departure from normal-range spontaneous blinking, the tear function findings from such studies may be confounded. Even subject awareness that blinking is being assessed may influence findings if such awareness results in any degree of voluntary control. Ideally, the influence on blink rate and tear functions induced by therapeutic or experimental interventions could be measured against a normal-range baseline spontaneous blink rate in orde

Quantum dot blueing and blinking enables fluorescence nanoscopy.

We demonstrate superresolution fluorescence imaging of cells using bioconjugated CdSe/ZnS quantum dot markers. Fluorescence blueing of quantum dot cores facilitates separation of blinking markers residing closer than the diffraction barrier. The high number of successively emitted photons enables ground state depletion microscopy followed by individual marker return with a resolving power of the size of a single dot (∼12 nm). Nanoscale imaging is feasible with a simple webcam.
