Investigating the relationship between inaccurate blood alcohol concentration estimates, harm and other negative consequences.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol-related harms place a significant burden on the Australian economy and health-care system. The current study aims to: (i) explore the relationship between blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and self-estimated blood alcohol concentration (EBAC); and (ii) determine whether BAC underestimation is related to an increased risk of experiencing physical aggression, verbal aggression, drink driving, ejection from a venue or refusal of service. METHODS: Patron street surveys were conducted in four night-time entertainment precincts (NEP) across Queensland, Australia, between June

Heavy Drinking among High School Student Athletes and Non-Athletes: Do Differences Emerge as Early as the Ninth Grade?

High school athletes have been identified as a high-risk group for heavy drinking. Little is known, however, about the timing of when student athlete heavy drinking begins to diverge from that of non-athletes. Objectives: The aim of the current study is to examine differences in changes in heavy drinking among ninth grade student athletes and non-athletes across the academic year. We hypothesized that student athletes would report greater increases in heavy drinking compared to non-athletes from fall to spring semester. Ninth grade students (N = 217) aged 13 to 15 completed questionnaires on h

Pharmacodynamic determinants of hangover: An intravenous alcohol self-administration study in non-dependent drinkers.

Alcohol hangover refers to the combination of negative mental and physical symptoms that can be experienced after an episode of alcohol consumption, typically emerging as blood alcohol concentration (BAC) approaches zero. Hangover has been associated with heavy drinking and may be relevant in the transition to alcohol use disorder (AUD). Our aim was to examine hangover prevalence and associated symptoms following intravenous alcohol self-administration (IV-ASA), and to identify possible predictors of hangover in non-dependent drinkers. Ninety-five drinkers without AUD completed an IV-ASA sessi

[Christmas article: A tribute to Dionysos].

"Another round" by the Danish film director Thomas Vinterberg is the story of four friends who (inspired by a theory from the Norwegian psychiatrist Finn Skårderud that modest intoxication would open our minds to the world around us) set out to "test", that if they maintain a 0.05% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) during work hours, it will improve their creativity and mindset. Several studies suggest, that food in the stomach before drinking not only leads to a lowering of the peak BAC but also boosts the rate of ethanol metabolism, and other findings indicate, that the BAC is higher after d

Effectiveness of a Theory-Based mHealth Intervention for High-Risk Drinking in College Students.

Background: College students are among the most vulnerable groups to problems associated with high-risk drinking consequences such as illness, injury, sexual abuse, and death. Promising mobile health (mHealth) approaches, such as smartphone (SP) apps, can be used in interventions to address or prevent excessive drinking. Method: The aim of the investigation was to examine the efficacy of a theoretically based mHealth SP app for alcohol intervention in two independent samples (N = 379): Mandated participants (Study 1) and voluntary participants (Study 2). Study 1 included a controlled trial wit

Influence of alcohol consumption on blood coagulation in rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM): an in-vivo study.

BACKGROUND: Twenty-five to 85% of trauma patients are under the influence of alcohol in addition to experiencing injury-related coagulation impairment. Viscoelastic point-of-care tests (thrombelastography [TEG], rotational thromboelastometry [ROTEM]) are popular tools for rapid hemostasis assessment and therapeutic decision-making in this and other settings. While alcohol affects these tests in-vitro, their specific effects in-vivo are unclear. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of alcohol ingestion on ROTEM parameters. METHODS: Twenty volunteers provided informed consent to drinking red win

Analyses of physical factors that contribute to the blood carboxyhemoglobin saturation in autopsy cases of house fire fatalities.

The authors analyzed data from forensic autopsies of 75 patients who died as a result of house fires to clarify the physical factors that affect blood carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) saturation. Blood COHb saturation levels were significantly lower in patients who survived in the hospital. No significant differences were found in the blood COHb saturation levels between patients who died immediately at the scene and those who were pronounced dead at the receiving hospital without heartbeat being restored. The COHb saturation levels were significantly different among the groups of patients classified

Acute Tolerance to the Analgesic Effects of Alcohol.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine whether the acute analgesic effects of alcohol intake are moderated by acute alcohol tolerance, characterized by differing subjective and neurobehavioral effects of a given blood alcohol concentration (BAC) depending on whether BAC is rising or falling. METHOD: Twenty-nine healthy drinkers (20 women) completed two laboratory sessions in which they consumed a study beverage: active alcohol (target BAC= .08 g/dl) and placebo. Acute alcohol tolerance was assessed by examining the main and interactive effects of beverage condition and assessment

Theoretical and retrograde calculation of blood alcohol: wide estimates using the Academy Standards Board for calculations over an extended period of time.

INTRODUCTION: Toxicologists defend alcohol testing from their laboratories for medicolegal cases. METHODS: A 22-year-old woman drank 144.1 g of alcohol over 8.25 hours at work. Precise details of her drinking (time, volume, and alcohol content) were provided. At her shift's end, her supervisor allowed her to drive home, during which time she caused the death of another driver. Her blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was 2.20 g/L, tested a few hours later. She did not drink alcohol after her work discharge. The decedent's family sued her employer for failure to recognize intoxication. An expert

Alcohol and cocaine use prior to suspected suicide: Insights from toxicology.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates whether there is a relationship between alcohol and cocaine use in deaths where suicide by self-injury is the suspected cause of death. METHODS: Adults referred by coroners to the Imperial College London Toxicology Unit for toxicological analysis between 2012 and 2016 were reviewed for inclusion criteria. Those who died by self-injury reasoned to be deliberate were included in the analysis. Femoral blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and presence of cocaine or benzoylecognine (a metabolite of cocaine) in blood and/or urine were tabulated and odds ratios cal

How intoxicated are you? Investigating self and observer intoxication ratings in relation to blood alcohol concentration.

INTRODUCTION: The ability to accurately detect alcohol intoxication is an important skill for people who use these substances and for a variety of professions (e.g. policing, responsible service of alcohol). Previous studies have found that intoxicated people are generally poor at estimating their own intoxication (particularly at high blood alcohol concentration; BAC) and the relationship between perceived intoxication and BAC appears to flatten at higher BAC levels. Studies of observer ratings of other's intoxication have yielded mixed results. The aim of this study was to investigate both s

Proceeding of the 8th Alcohol Hangover Research Group Meeting.

Alcohol hangover is one of the most commonly experienced consequences of alcohol consumption. An alcohol hangover develops as the blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) approaches zero, and is characterized by a general feeling of misery. More insight into the pathology of an alcohol hangover needs to be gained, in order to enhance the understanding of the area, and as a potential contribution to the innovation of a preventative or hangover curing treatment. The Alcohol Hangover Research Group (AHRG) was founded to support the area of alcohol hangover. This proceeding describes the latest findings

Testing antemortem blood samples for ethanol after four to seven years of refrigerated storage.

The previous studies on ethanol stability in antemortem blood samples stored under various conditions have shown that ethanol concentration decreases with storage. The feasibility of measuring a forensically meaningful blood ethanol concentration in antemortem blood samples stored refrigerated (~4°C) from 4-7 years after the blood draw was evaluated in this research. All blood samples were collected into two 10-ml gray top Vacutainer® tubes as part of police driving under the influence investigations. In 29 cases, blood in the tube originally analyzed was retested after 5-7 years of refrigerat

Preanalytical factors influencing the results of ethanol analysis in postmortem specimens.

Excessive drinking and drunkenness are underlying factors in many fatal accidents, which make the quantitative determination of ethanol in postmortem (PM) specimens an essential part of all unnatural death investigations. The same analytical methods are used to determine ethanol in blood taken from living and deceased persons although the interpretation of the results is more complicated in medical examiner cases owing to various preanalytical factors. The biggest problem is that under anaerobic conditions ethanol can be produced naturally in decomposed bodies by microbial activity and ferment

Elevated creatinine kinase levels amongst Dutch adolescents with acute alcohol intoxication.

This study aims to explore the prevalence of creatinine kinase elevation amongst a sample of Dutch adolescents admitted for acute alcohol intoxication. The data on all admitted adolescents < 18 years old with acute alcohol intoxication between 2008 and 2021 were collected from a Dutch major district general hospital, Reinier de Graaf Gasthuis, in Delft. Overall, 495 adolescents who were treated for symptoms of acute alcohol intoxication during this period were included in the study. When evaluating the blood samples of the included patients, elevated creatinine kinase levels were found in 60%

The prevalence of alcohol-involved crashes across high and low complexity road environments: Does knowing where drinking drivers crash help explain why they crash?

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol use has been linked to impairment of cognitive and psychomotor driving skills, yet the extent to which skill impairment contributes to actual crashes is unknown. A reasonable assumption is that some driving situations have higher skill demands than others. We contend that intersections, the presence of other vehicles or moving objects, and work zones are examples of common situations with higher skill demands. Accordingly, if skill deficits are largely responsible for alcohol-involved crashes, crashes involving a drinking driver (versus only sober drivers) should be overrepr

Validating transdermal alcohol biosensors: a meta-analysis of associations between blood/breath-based measures and transdermal alcohol sensor output.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Transdermal alcohol sensors carry immense promise for the continuous assessment of drinking but are inconsistent in detecting more fine-grained indicators of alcohol consumption. Prior studies examining associations between transdermal alcohol concentration (TAC) and blood/breath alcohol concentration (BAC) have yielded highly variable correlations and lag times. The current review aimed to synthesize transdermal validation studies, aggregating results from more than three decades of research to characterize the validity of transdermal sensors for assessing alcohol consump

Preanalytical Factors Influencing the Stability of Ethanol in Antemortem Blood and Urine Samples.

The quantitative analysis of ethanol in blood and other biological specimens is a commonly requested service from forensic science and toxicology laboratories worldwide. The measured blood alcohol concentration (BAC) constitutes important evidence when alcohol-related crimes are investigated, such as drunken driving or drug-related sexual assault. This review article considers the importance of various preanalytical factors that might influence changes in the ethanol concentration in blood after collection and before analysis or reanalysis after various periods of storage. When blood samples w

Comparative Implementation of Fractional Blood Alcohol Model by Numerical Approach.

The current article discusses several innovative and intriguing aspects of the Caputo and modified Atangana-Baleanu derivative in the Caputo sense (MABC) based on a fractional blood alcohol model. The initial concentration of alcohol in the stomach after consumption, the rate at which alcohol is absorbed into the circulation, and the rate at which the liver metabolizes alcohol are the three factors that determine the model's resolution. Utilizing the Laplace transform method and the generalized Mittag-Leffler function method (GMLFM), the analytical results of stomach alcohol concentration and
