International private umbilical cord blood banking has expanded rapidly in recent years since the first cord blood transplant which was 20 years ago. Private companies offer parents the opportunity to store umbilical cord blood for the possible future use by their child or other family members. The private cord blood industry has been criticised by a number of professional bodies including the EU Ethics Committee, the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the Royal College of Midwives and the US College of Paediatrics. This review presents the arguments from the opponents of private cor

The London Cord Blood Bank was established with the aim of collecting, processing and storing 10000 unrelated stem cell donations for the significant number of children in the UK requiring transplantation, for whom a matched unrelated bone marrow donor cannot be found. Collection is performed at two hospitals by dedicated cord blood bank staff after delivery of the placenta. Mothers are interviewed regarding medical, ethnic and behavioural history by nurse counsellors and sign a detailed consent form. Donations are returned to the bank for processing. Volume reduction is undertaken by a simple

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation has been used to treat thousands of patients, both adults and children, who have life-threatening hematological diseases. The principal limitations of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) are, for the majority of patients, the lack of suitable HLA-matched donors and the complications of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) associated with HLA mismatches. The lack of an HLA-identical sibling donor in 70% of the cases has been overcome through the establishment of registries of potential marrow donors. These registries, however, often

Tissue transplantation and banking are rapidly growing services throughout the world reflecting the widening availability of transplantable cadaver tissue and the mounting clinical indications particularly in orthopaedic, plastic and cardiovascular surgery. In the US tissue banking is more established, yet continues to show a rapid growth profile. In the UK it is currently organised in a variety of different ways and by a number of different organisations. The risks of disease transmission by tissue transplantation are similar to those for blood transfusion and the majority of tissues are graf

Dr. Charles Richard Drew, a pioneering figure in modern blood banking and 20th-century medicine, revolutionized blood donation and storage processes, fundamentally shaping the field as we know it today. His extensive work with blood and plasma, combined with an innovative approach to reducing contamination, laid the foundation for modern standards in safety and efficiency. His efforts were instrumental in creating blood banks that supported soldiers during World War II. Beyond his scientific contributions, Dr. Drew was a tireless advocate for racial equality, challenging the widespread discrim

BACKGROUND: Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is an important source of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation especially in minority populations with limited chances of finding a histocompatible volunteer donor in the registry. UCB has the advantages of early availability, successful outcomes despite some histocompatibility mismatch, and low incidence of chronic graft-versus-host disease. Public cord blood banks that disseminate UCB products for transplant depend on voluntary donation at participating hospitals and obstetrical providers for collection.
PROCEDURE: Using survey questionnaires,

This article provides a concise overview of blood banking and transfusion medicine (BBTM) for the therapeutic apheresis medicine practitioner. It addresses the complete pathway from blood donor qualification to blood collection, to processing and storing blood components, to patient testing, to ordering blood components for therapeutic apheresis (TA) procedures, to preparing the component for transfusion, and finally to transfusion. The nurses, technologists, and physicians orchestrate these activities in concert to best serve patients undergoing TA procedures. Enhancing knowledge of these pro

BACKGROUND: The most important objective for cord blood banks is to store cord blood units of high quality, which is determined by total nucleated cells (TNCs) and CD34+ cells. Determining the factors affecting the stored life-saving cells would be beneficial to the field.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 4930 cord blood units were collected between January 2007 and October 2009 and processed using a double extraction technique to sediment red blood cells with variable centrifugation time determined by the formula CT = KL - M, where CT is centrifuge time, K is 7.7227, M is 29.742, and L i

Hospital transfusion services and blood donor centers have continued to rely on manual hemagglutination methods for pretransfusion compatibility testing. Automation with continuous flow and batch analyzers has been practical only for the largest donor centers. During the last 20 years, other methods of streamlining compatibility testing have evolved. Two of the most successful approaches have used microplates to perform liquid agglutination tests or solid-phase, red cell adherence tests. More recently, a gel test has been developed. On the basis of these technologies, increasing numbers of sem

Transfusion safety in Mexico depends on 2 essential pillars: The proper clinical selection of donors and the effective application of screening tests established in current regulations. Among these tests, it is included mandatory detection of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), as well as Trypanosoma cruzi and Treponema pallidum, all considered highly relevant pathogens due to their potential for bloodborne transmission and their clinical impact. Each year, thousands of people in the country acquire HCV, HBV, or HIV infections, and a significan

The author of this article recalls his visit to a blood donor center in 700 bed general Red Cross Hospital in Shanghai. Though the blood banking he describes might be viewed as simplistic and devoid of sophistication, the author believes that the report should serve as a stimulus to reevaluate our blood banking procedures. Are they redundant? Are they all necessary? Are they cost effective?

BACKGROUND: Cord blood is an important source of stem cells. However, nearly 90% of public cord blood banks have declared that they are struggling to maintain their financial sustainability and avoid bankruptcy. The objective of this study is to evaluate how characteristics of cord blood units influence their utilization, then use this information to model the economic viability and therapeutic value of different banking strategies.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of cord blood data registered between January 1st, 2009 and December 31st, 2011 in Bone Marrow Donor Worldwide. Data were collecte

The creation of umbilical cord blood (UCB) banks raises interesting medical, social, economic and ethical issues. This paper reviews the ethical problems specifically. In this respect, it evaluates: a) whether there are advantages to the use of UCB compared to bone marrow, b) whether or not it is ethical to create UCB banks, c) whether their creation is ethically acceptable in terms of their clinical usefulness or d) the use made of them for therapeutic purposes, and finally e) whether their creation is ethically justified from a cost/profitability point of view. We focus primarily on evaluati

Human umbilical cord blood contains enough hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation instead of marrow cells to cure children and adults with leukemia and other potentially fatal marrow disorders. An international cord blood transplantation registry is currently collecting information about the results of these transplants. As a result of relative immune deficiency at birth, it is likely that partially matched unrelated transplants can be successful; for this purpose an international cord blood banking project is described.

Understanding the relationships among altruistic health acts may serve to aid therapeutic research advances. In this paper, we report on the links between two such behaviours-donating blood and carrying an organ donor card-and willingness to donate urological tissue to a tissue bank. Reasons for the differential willingness to do so are examined in this paper. A systematic sample of 259 new and returning attendees at a tertiary urology referral clinic in Ireland completed a self-report questionnaire in an outpatient setting. In addition to demographic details, details of known diagnosis of mal

The use of blood donor history and state-of-the-art FDA-licensed serological and nucleic acid testing (NAT) assays have greatly reduced the "infectious window" for several transfusion-transmitted pathogens. Currently transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus (HTLV), hepatitis viruses and West Nile Virus are rare events. The seroprevalence of cytomegalovirus in the donor population is high and cytomegalovirus infection can cause significant complications for immunocompromised recipients of blood transfusion. Careful use of CMV seronegative blood resourc
