Pursuing their chief work--gathering, processing and distributing blood--the blood donor centres of the Canadian Red Cross Society follow standard operating procedures like those in place at the Ottawa centre. Here, recruitment staff and volunteers work to recruit donors to meet needs at a time when the number of donors is falling. When they register, donors must show proof of identity. Each receives a permanent identification number that is linked to the numbers assigned to the units of blood each donates and to the date the unit was collected and the centre that collected it. Donors must ans

Directed blood donations from family members are frequently desired for pediatric patients. A reduced risk for transfusion-transmitted diseases could not be proved. There are indications that recommendation of directed blood donation could oblige members of risk groups for HIV or hepatitis infection to donate blood since their voluntariness is not guaranteed and the possibility of self-exclusion is omitted. In some instances it may be necessary to perform directed blood donations from relatives because of immunological or medical principles, e.g. transfusion of maternal platelets in neonatal a

Blood donors in Canada are asked to volunteer their history of drug ingestion within the previous 24 hours. The authors analysed 400 serum samples from blood donors for acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and acetaminophen, two commonly used nonprescription drugs. Although 16 of the samples contained ASA and 10 acetaminophen (2 contained both drugs), none of the donors had volunteered that they had ingested those medications before donating blood. The possible role of these drugs in some of the unexplained reactions to transfusions is considered.

Pregnancy affected by erythrocyte alloimmunization often requires intrauterine transfusion for fetal survival. Because blood donated by a random donor has been associated with an increased risk of disease transmission, maternal blood donation has been advocated as an alternative blood source for intrauterine transfusion. Collaboration between medical, nursing, laboratory, and nutrition personnel optimizes the safety and success of the procedure. This article describes the collaborative care of the woman participating in maternal blood donation for intrauterine transfusion.

In order to characterize autonomic responses to acute volume loss, supine ECG, blood pressure (BP) and uncalibrated breathing signal (UBS) recordings were taken before and after blood donation in 48 healthy volunteers. Time and frequency domain parameters of RR interval (RRI), BP and UBS variability were determined. Baroreflex gain was calculated by the technique of the spontaneous sequences and cross-spectral analysis. The systolic (SAP), diastolic (DAP) and mean BP (MAP) increased after the blood withdrawal. The central frequency of breathing and mean heart rate did not change. RRI variabili

BACKGROUND: The burden of transfusion-transmitted infections among blood recipients remains low due to extensive pre- and post-donation screening. However, the military has the unique challenge of providing blood in austere environments with limited testing capabilities. This study evaluates the infectious etiologies of deferred blood donors at a large military blood donation center.
METHODS: All blood donors at the Armed Service Blood Bank Center, San Antonio, between 2017 and 2022 with positive post-donation screening for hepatitis C (HCV), hepatitis B (HBV), human immunodeficiency virus (H

Approximately 3% to 3.5% of the US population donates whole blood each year. Physicians might be approached by a blood donor because of a donor suitability issue, a positive postdonation test, or a donation-related complication. Approximately 83% of blood donors successfully donate; but 13% are rejected because of a donor suitability issue; 1% have a positive test, which is often nonspecific or false-positive; and 2% to 4% of the phlebotomies are not successful. The most common adverse physical events based on donor interviews are bruise (23%), sore arm (10%), fatigue (8%), and vasovagal react

In this paper, we use register data on all blood donors (n = 259,172) and changes in geographical locations of blood donation centers in the Netherlands over the past decade, to examine the strength of altruistic motivations in blood donation by testing how blood donor behavior changes after the cost of donating in the form of time and inconvenience increases. We examined whether closing donation centers influences blood donor lapse, and whether the risk for lapse varies between donors with different blood groups. A lower lapsing risk for donors with universal, O-negative blood as costs increa

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusions which save lives through their essential function bring infection risks to users especially in areas with limited medical resources.
OBJECTIVE: The research study aimed to determine the main factors that cause blood transfusion-transmitted infections in donated blood.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study among voluntary blood donors. Blood tests were conducted on samples from the study to detect common transfusion-transmitted infections which included Hepatitis B (HBV) Hepatitis C (HCV) HIV Syphilis and Malaria. Data on demographic characteristics and heal

The demand for blood products steadily increases. Concurrently, blood donor recruitment becomes more and more difficult. This study aimed to investigate effects of blood donation on blood donors, which could be helpful for blood donor recruitment and retention. In addition to cortisol measurements in saliva, three questionnaires quantifying mood (good/bad), vigilance (awake/tired), agitation (calm/nervous), actual strain and asking for donation-related effects perceived were distributed to 110 whole blood donors (DON). Results obtained were compared with 109 control subjects (CON) lacking the

Transfusion and apheresis science : official journal of the World Apheresis Association : official journal of the European Society for Haemapheresis2017eng
BACKGROUND: Transfusion of blood-derived products is often used as a life-saving treatment, and being a blood donor should be common, especially among medical professionals. Thus, an awareness of one's own blood type in medical students should be common. Our aim was to assess if students of the Medical University of Warsaw know their blood type and how many of them are registered blood donors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A survey was conducted in a group of 1121 students. The survey included questions addressing awareness of the students' blood type, the frequency of blood types in Poland, being a

The journey of receiving blood as a patient with transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia has profoundly shaped my understanding of the life-saving power of blood donation. This personal experience underscores the critical importance of blood donors, not just for individual recipients but for the broader community, enhancing public health, productivity, and well-being. There are several challenges to securing a blood donor pool in current health care climate. Solutions that focus on the engagement of donors, clinicians, and patients are key to improving the donor pool and utilizing the blood sup

Unique issues in blood donation and blood transfusion regarding African Americans (AA) in the United States span the donation process, manufacturing of products, and hospital transfusion service. As AAs become a growing population, a constant supply of blood donated by AAs is necessary to support this growth. Nationally, AAs are underrepresented in blood collection, which may be secondary to AAs having higher rates of anemia and other deferrable conditions or unique motivators as well as other barriers to blood donation. When investigating blood transfusion practices, blood utilization for dif

OBJECTIVES: To assess the blood pressure (BP) of donors, the rate of hypertensive range readings amongst donors not previously identified as hypertensive and determine the value of an informational sheet about hypertension given at the time of donation.
AIM: To determine the value of screening for high BP during blood donation as a public health activity.
BACKGROUND: Blood donation centres measure donor BPs before accepting donations and thus provide a unique opportunity for hypertension screening and education.
MATERIALS/METHODS: An anonymous survey was completed by blood donors over 2 wee

Aim of this review is to compare benefits and risks of autologous blood transfusion with special emphasize on donation and retransfusion risks. Autologous blood transfusion may reduce the transfusion-associated mortality by 70%. Another advantage of preoperative autologous blood donation is the increase in erythropoiesis. Immunologic and viral infectious complications have not been reported with transfusion of autologous blood. On the other hand, autologous blood predonation is associated with risks during donation and retransfusion. Reactions due to routine autologous predonation of blood hav
