[Normal values of cerebral blood flow velocities in neonates].

INTRODUCTION: There was used color Doppler ultrasonography (cD-USI), allowing simultaneous examination of parenchymal and vascular cerebral structures. The evaluation of blood flow velocities in cerebral arteries is important in the assessment of cerebral circulation in hypoxic-ischaemic and haemorrhagic brain damage in neonates. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to estimate normal values of cerebral blood flow velocities (CBFV) and Doppler indices--pulsatility index (PI) and resistance index (RI)--in the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) during the first days of life in infants. METHODS: CB

Blood flow velocity in the peripheral circulation of glaucoma patients.

Using the laser Doppler technique we measured finger blood flow velocity in 25 untreated primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), 22 untreated low-tension glaucoma (LTG) and 19 age-matched normal subjects. Four blood flow measurements were recorded: baseline flow, after immersion in warm water for 2 min (40 degrees C maximum flow), after 10 s exposure to cold water (4 degrees C minimum flow) and time to recover to baseline flow after cold immersion. Significant differences between the LTG group and both the normal and POAG groups were found in a greater maximum flow (p = 0.03 and p = 0.01, respecti

Contralateral cerebral blood flow velocity changes after intracarotid amobarbital injection.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The intracarotid amobarbital procedure (IAP) leads to a prompt decrease in ipsilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA) mean blood flow velocity (MFV). Little is known about contralateral MFV changes. METHODS: The authors investigated bilateral MCA MFV using transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) in 8 patients with epilepsy undergoing IAP. Measurements were excluded from analysis if angiography revealed any signs of interhemispheric cross-flow. RESULTS: With in 64 seconds after amobarbital injection, ipsilateral MFV decreased to a mean of 44.4% +/- 7.5% of baseline value (

Cerebral blood flow velocity changes after bovine natural surfactant instillation.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of bovine natural surfactant (beractant) instillation on cerebral hemodynamics in preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). STUDY DESIGN: Preterm infants who required surfactant for RDS were enrolled. Cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) waveforms from the pericallosal artery were analyzed by pulsed Doppler ultrasonography with the anterior fontanel serving as an acoustic window. CBFV was measured before and at 5, 10, 20, and 30 minutes after the first dose of a bolus instillation of surfactant in four aliquots. Simultaneously with CBFV measu

Cerebral blood-flow velocity patterns in post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilation.

To evaluate the effect of ventricular dilation (VD) on cerebral hemodynamics, serial cerebral bloodflow velocity patterns from the anterior and middle cerebral, and circle of Willis arteries were examined by range-gated, pulsed Doppler sonography in premature infants developing post-hemorrhagic VD. Nine infants (25 to 30 weeks gestation) without a patent ductus arteriosus were studied until resolution of VD. Forty-nine cranial sonograms from all nine infants were reviewed independently and grouped cross-sectionally into mild, moderate and severe VD prior to shunt. The corresponding pulsatility

Influence of acetazolamide and CO2 on extracranial flow volume and intracranial blood flow velocity.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The vasomotor response can be tested by means of transcranial Doppler sonography. If a constant vessel diameter is assumed, the flow velocity changes will reflect blood flow volume changes. This hypothesis is difficult to verify. Simultaneous assessment of intracranial flow velocity and extracranial flow volume changes may solve this problem. METHODS: We tested vasomotor response in 32 volunteers (age, 42+/-18 years) with 5% CO2. Acetazolamide (1 g) was tested in 15 volunteers (age, 28+/-8 years). To evaluate drug-dependent flow changes in the external carotid artery t

Indomethacin treatment decreases renal blood flow velocity in human neonates.

OBJECTIVES: The fingers, toes, and tips of the nose and ears have specialised structural and functional features for thermoregulation, and are the most common areas of Raynaud's phenomenon in systemic sclerosis. Digital thermal monitoring (DTM) of vascular reactivity assesses Doppler ultrasound hyperemic, low frequency, blood velocity of radial artery and fingertip vascular function. Flow mediated dilation (FMD) is an indirect measure of endothelial function, perfusion, and vasodilator ability. In this study, we investigated the cross-sectional correlation of FMD and DTM variables to inform an

Blood flow velocity waveforms at late pregnancy and during labor.

608 high-risk pregnancies were monitored by repeated Doppler-examinations of the fetal aortic blood flow. An absent end-diastolic flow pattern was found to reveal fetal growth retardation with 73% sensitivity. The positive predictive value of this finding for prediction of fetal growth retardation combined with intrauterine distress (prevalence in the material 8%) was 85%. In the cases with this flow pattern, the cesarean section rate was 72%, and the mean gestational age at delivery was 34 weeks. Normal labor was not associated with any changes of umbilical arterial flow velocity waveforms, b

Doppler blood flow velocity waveforms in alpha-thalassemia hydrops fetalis.

Doppler shift blood flow velocity-time waveforms in the umbilical arteries (UA), aorta (A), and inferior vena cava (IVC) in eight fetuses with alpha-thalassemia (alpha-thal) hydrops fetalis were described. The UA waveforms in these fetuses with anemia in utero depicted a hyperdynamic circulatory state with a relative increase in acceleration slope, more linear decline from maximum systole to end diastole, and reduced spectral broadening. The aortic waveforms similarly displayed distorted systolic peaks, flow turbulence, and greatly elevated diastolic frequencies. Reversal of end diastolic flow

Middle cerebral artery blood velocity and cerebral blood flow in sickle cell disease.

To understand better the relationship between blood velocity measured by transcranial Doppler and cerebral blood flow measured by the 133Xe inhalation method, we examined 23 patients undergoing evaluation in the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at Columbia University. Blood velocity in the middle cerebral artery was directly related to cerebral flow (r = 0.77; p less than 0.05). A multivariate analysis in this sample made it possible to improve this correlation to account for more than 90% of the variability in cerebral blood flow by the use of transcranial Doppler measures of velocity and pul

Umbilical artery catheter blood sampling alters cerebral blood flow velocity in preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: Changes in cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) have been associated with occurrence of intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm infants. Blood sampling from umbilical artery catheters (UACs) may cause changes in CBFV. Two UAC positions are generally used, high (T6 to T10) and low (L3 to L5). We hypothesized that CBFV changes would occur during UAC sampling and that CBFV changes would be greater in the high than the low position. STUDY DESIGN: We measured CBFV in the anterior cerebral artery in 30 very low birth weight infants before, during, and after aspiration and replacement of bl
