Evaluation of Forensic Luminol in Detection of Blood Stains in Instruments Following Dental Treatment.

Background Saliva and blood, being biological materials with a high potential for infectious transmission in dental environments, pose significant risks to dental professionals, assistants, and patients alike. Therefore, practitioners must adopt stringent security measures to ensure patient care, considering all parties as potential carriers of microorganisms capable of causing infectious diseases. Currently, various methods of disinfection and sterilization are employed to maintain the aseptic chain effectively. Having reliable methods for detecting substances in liquids, particularly body fl

A stain with all the fixing's - Enhancement of fingermarks in blood using a combined fixative and aqueous protein stain.

The use of protein stains to enhance fingermark ridge detail in blood is a common technique used by forensic practitioners around the world. Amido Black is one of the most favoured protein stains due to its strong staining ability. The most common formulation of Amido Black is methanol based, with an ability to simultaneously fix and stain the blood impression, however methanol is toxic and can disrupt some surfaces, potentially compromising fingermark detail. If the surface is suspected of being a material that is impacted by methanol, there is an alternative aqueous formulation, which requir

Performance of Field's Stain Compared with Conventional Giemsa Stain for the Rapid Detection of Blood Microfilariae in Gabon.

Filarial infections caused by Loa loa and Mansonella perstans are a considerable public health burden in rural regions of Central Africa. Rapid diagnostic tools for the detection of microfilariae in the blood are needed. Field's stain is a rapid staining technique for microscopic slides originally established for malaria diagnostics. It requires less than 1 minute of staining compared with conventional staining protocols requiring at least 15 to 20 minutes for staining and could thus significantly accelerate diagnostics for human filariasis. Here we evaluated Field's stain as a rapid staining

Legionella pneumophila seen in Gram stains of respiratory secretions and recovered from conventional blood cultures.

We report a fatal case of Legionnaires' disease in which Legionella pneumophila was easily visible in large numbers in Gram stains of clinical material and was recovered from conventional blood cultures after seven days incubation. The presence of many readily seen Gram-negative, pleomorphic bacilli in direct Gram stains of respiratory secretions should support a possible diagnosis of Legionnaires' disease.

Corneal Blood Staining after Complicated Cataract Surgery.

PURPOSE: To report the case of a patient with corneal blood staining after a complicated cataract surgery. OBSERVATIONS: We report on a 68-year-old woman who developed corneal blood staining secondary to hyphema after cataract surgery, despite the fact that intraocular pressure was not increased for a prolonged time. The corneal staining spontaneously cleared from the periphery towards the center. It was fully resolved after 2.5 years of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANCE: In case of hyphema induced by cataract surgery, performance of early anterior chamber washout should be considered to

Blood staining of the cornea. Light microscopic and ultrastructural features.

Eleven blood-stained corneas were examined by light and transmission electron microscopy at intervals ranging from one month to seven years after initial staining occurred. Blood staining in each case was associated with focal loss of endothelial cells or endothelial degenerative changes and elevated intraocular pressure. Globules of erythrocytic breakdown products penetrated the discontinuous endothelium and intact Descemet's membrane. Large deposits, primarily extracellular, displaced but did not interrupt the stromal lamellae. Keratocytes in blood-stained corneas contained erythrocytic brea

Quantification of solution-free red blood cell staining by sorption kinetics of Romanowsky stains to agarose gels.

The imaging and quantification of stained red blood cells (RBCs) are important for identifying RBCs in hematology and for diagnosing diseased RBCs or parasites in cytopathology. Romanowsky staining has been used traditionally to produce hues in blood cells using a mixture of anionic eosin Y and cationic methylene blue and azure B. While Romanowsky stains have been widely used in cytopathology, end-users have experienced problems with varying results in staining due to the premature precipitation or evaporation of methanol, leading to the inherent inconsistency of solution-based Romanowsky stai

Streptokinase versus alteplase and other treatments for acute and delayed thrombolysis of blood stains in clothing.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the usefulness of heparin, alteplase, and streptokinase in removing blood stains. DESIGN: Randomised controlled trial. SETTING: Hospital laundry. INTERVENTIONS: Blood stains were allocated to treatment with alteplase, streptokinase, heparin, a commercial enzymatic stain remover, or no treatment at all after three or seven hours and then washed in hot or cold water two hours later. RESULTS: Both hot water and early treatment were strongly associated with improved stain removal. All four treatments were associated with a worse outcome than no treatment at all, although f

Hierarchical classification models and Handheld NIR spectrometer to human blood stains identification on different floor tiles.

One of the most important types of evidence in certain criminal investigations is traces of human blood. For a detailed investigation, blood samples must be identified and collected at the crime scene. The present study aimed to evaluate the potential of the identification of human blood in stains deposited on different types of floor tiles (five types of ceramics and four types of porcelain tiles) using a portable NIR instrument. Hierarchical models were developed by combining multivariate analysis techniques capable of identifying traces of human blood (HB), animal blood (AB) and common fals

Deep learning for the identification of Candida spp. directly from blood culture gram stains from candidemia patients.

Candidemias caused by the yeasts formerly encompassed as Candida spp. require expedited identification to decide on the antifungal treatment and reduce mortality. Traditional methods rely on subcultures for diagnosis, with turnaround times of 72-96 h, or expensive equipment. Deep learning and convolutional neural networks (CNN) have shown high accuracy for image recognition in microbiology. We compared the accuracy of six CNNs (GoogLeNet, InceptionV3, AlexNet, ResNet18, ResNet50, and DenseNet161) to identify Candida spp. at the species level, with photographs obtained mainly from clinical bloo

The detection of positive blood cultures in children using the acridine orange, gram, and methylene blue stains.

The efficacy of the acridine orange (AO), gram (G), and methylene blue (MB) microscopic procedures was analyzed using positive blood cultures monitored by a radiometric procedure (Bactec) in children. Sixty-eight positive cultures included the following isolates: Haemophilus influenzae type b, Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterobacteriaceae, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida spp., and seven other pathogens. The MB stain yielded the highest detection rate, 99%, in comparison with 94 and 93% for the AO and G stains, respectively. Since the MB stain yielded comparable results to

Confocal microscopy study of nerves and blood vessels in untreated and treated port wine stains: preliminary observations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Vascular ectasia in port wine stain birthmarks (PWS) might result from reduced innervation with loss of autonomic stimulation. We investigated this theory and evaluated nerve and blood vessel density, and mean blood vessel size in untreated and treated PWS skin. METHODS: Skin biopsy specimens were obtained from uninvolved skin, untreated PWS, PWS with a good response to laser treatment and PWS with a poor response to laser treatment. Confocal microscopy was performed to determine nerve and blood vessel density, and mean blood vessel size. RESULTS: Nerve density was

Blood Perfusion May Determine the Therapeutic Effect of Pulsed Dye Laser on Port-Wine Stains Located on Extremities.

Background: Port-wine stains (PWS) on proximal limbs respond better to pulsed dye laser (PDL) than PWS on distal limbs. Objective: To investigate whether the superiority of PDL efficacy on the proximal limbs is related to variations in blood perfusion. Methods: Patients with untreated PWS on the extremities underwent three sessions of PDL. Blood perfusion of the selected sites on both the proximal and distal limbs, as well as control sites, was detected by laser speckle imaging before treatment. After treatment was completed, the therapeutic effect was evaluated both objectively and subjective

Polarized Hyperspectral Microscopic Imaging for White Blood Cells on Wright-Stained Blood Smear Slides.

White blood cells, also called leukocytes, are hematopoietic cells of the immune system that are involved in protecting the body against both infectious diseases and foreign materials. The abnormal development and uncontrolled proliferation of these cells can lead to devastating cancers. Their timely recognition in the peripheral blood is critical to diagnosis and treatment. In this study, we developed a microscopic imaging system for improving the visualization of white blood cells on Wright's stained blood smear slides, with two different setups: polarized light imaging and polarized hypersp

Detection of blood stains using computer vision-based algorithms and their association with postoperative outcomes in thoracoscopic lobectomies.

OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to develop high throughput computer vision (CV) algorithms to detect blood stains in thoracoscopic surgery and to determine how the detected blood stains are associated with postoperative outcomes. METHODS: Blood pixels in surgical videos were identified by CV algorithms trained with thousands of blood and non-blood pixels randomly selected and manually labelled. The proportion of blood pixels (PBP) was computed for key video frames to summarize the blood stain information during surgery. Statistical regression analyses were utilized to investigate the potential assoc

Persistent corneal blood staining after microhook trabeculotomy: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Hyphema, that is, massive anterior chamber hemorrhage, is one of the major complications after a recent minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. Hyphema along with high intraocular pressure increases the risk of corneal bloodstaining. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 71-year-old female was receiving 0.1% fluorometholone drops in both eyes for severe dry eye. She was also receiving antiplatelet agents for platelet aggregation hyperactivity and prednisolone for interstitial pneumonia internally. Her right eye was suffering from increased intraocular pressure. DIAGNOSIS: We diagnosed her right eye

Congenital corneal blood staining secondary to hemorrhagic persistent fetal vasculature.

An African American girl born at 37 weeks via spontaneous vaginal delivery to a 33-year-old woman was noted on delivery to have a unilateral absent red reflex in the right eye, which was enlarged. Intraocular pressure was elevated, and the cornea had a straw-colored opacity. B-scan ultrasonography of the right eye showed diffuse hyperechoic vitreous opacities and a retrolental mass, with a hyperechoic band stretching from the optic disk to the posterior lens. Neuroimaging showed a unilateral enlarged globe, intraocular hemorrhage, and persistent fetal vasculature, with no other intracranial pa
