New aspects of the skin barrier organization.

The original Kocher approach was published several times in the 18921907 period. It extends in the interval between the extensor carpi ulnaris and the anconeus and consists in subperiostal release of the lateral collateral ligament (LCL), joint capsule and origin of extensors at the lateral epicondyle and their retraction anteriorly, and a similar release of the anconeus from the distal humerus and its reflection posteriorly. This provides an extensive approach to the elbow. Today this approach is described in the textbooks in various modifications that have little in common with the original

Effects of PM2.5 exposure on reproductive system and its mechanisms.

With the development of human society, haze has become an important form of air pollution. Haze is a mixture of fog and haze, and the main component of haze is fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which is the most important indicator of composite air pollution. Epidemiological studies proved that PM2.5 can break through the respiratory mucosal barrier and enter the human body, causing pathological effects on multiple systems of the body. In the past, people put more attention to PM2.5 in the respiratory system, cardiovascular system, nervous system, etc, and relatively paid less attention to the

A century of exercise physiology: lung fluid balance during and following exercise.

PURPOSE: This review recalls the principles developed over a century to describe trans-capillary fluid exchanges concerning in particular the lung during exercise, a specific condition where dyspnea is a leading symptom, the question being whether this symptom simply relates to fatigue or also implies some degree of lung edema. METHOD: Data from experimental models of lung edema are recalled aiming to: (1) describe how extravascular lung water is strictly controlled by "safety factors" in physiological conditions, (2) consider how waning of "safety factors" inevitably leads to development of

Candida in the lower respiratory tract induces barrier disruption in mice and predicts poor outcomes in mechanically ventilated humans.

Candida albicans (Calb) in the lower respiratory tract (LRT) is considered a rare cause of pneumonia, yet its frequent recovery from LRT secretions of mechanically ventilated patients associates with poor clinical outcomes. To determine whether Calb contributes to lung injury, we conducted a translational investigation spanning two independent, prospective human cohorts, murine models of lung injury, and in vitro assays. In critically ill patients, Calb was the most abundant fungus in LRT specimens, and its detection associated with increased markers of lung injury, prolonged mechanical ventil

Fundamental structural aspects and features in the bioengineering of the gas exchangers: comparative perspectives.

Over its life, an organism's survival and success are determined by the inventory of vital adaptations that its progenitors have creatively appropriated, devised and harnessed along the evolutionary pathway. Such conserved attributes provide the armamentarium necessary for withstanding the adverse effects of natural selection. Refinements of the designs of the respiratory organs have been critical for survival and phylogenetic advancement of animal life. Gas exchangers have changed in direct response to the respiratory needs of whole organisms in different environmental states and conditions.

What is the most efficient respiratory organ for the loricariid air-breathing fish Pterygoplichthys anisitsi, gills or stomach? A quantitative morphological study.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the morphometric respiratory potential of gills compared to the stomach in obtaining oxygen for aerobic metabolism in Pterygoplichthys anisitsi, a facultative air-breathing fish. The measurements were done using stereological methods. The gills showed greater total volume, volume-to-body mass ratio, potential surface area, and surface-to-volume ratio than the stomach. The water-blood diffusion barrier of the gills is thicker than the air-blood diffusion barrier of the stomach. Taken together, the surface area, the surface-to-volume ratio and the

Type I interferon protects against pneumococcal invasive disease by inhibiting bacterial transmigration across the lung.

Streptococcus pneumoniae infection is a leading cause of bacterial pneumonia, sepsis and meningitis and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Type I interferon (IFN-I), whose contribution to antiviral and intracellular bacterial immunity is well established, is also elicited during pneumococcal infection, yet its functional significance is not well defined. Here, we show that IFN-I plays an important role in the host defense against pneumococci by counteracting the transmigration of bacteria from the lung to the blood. Mice that lack the type I interferon receptor (Ifnar1 (-/-)) or

Principle and Application of Novel Negative Air (Oxygen) Ion Storage and Release Products.

Negative air ions (NAI) are ions present in the air that enhance blood oxygen absorption and utilization, stimulate metabolism, and modulate mood and nervous system activity. However, the application of NAI has been limited by storage challenges and low concentrations due to the conditions under which they are produced and the nature of the ions themselves. In order to overcome these limitations and develop NAI as a viable method of treatment, we have introduced a novel, highly concentrated NAI prodrug that incorporates NAI into flaxseed oil. This innovative drug can be administered in liquid,

Targeted structural destabilization of flavonoids: A novel paradigm for metabolic reprogramming and anti-senescence to repair the alveolar-capillary barrier.

Persistent disruption of the alveolar-capillary barrier (ACB) is the core pathological basis of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and pulmonary fibrosis (PF). ACB deterioration reflects a complex pathological process involving macrophage immunometabolic reprogramming, epithelial stress responses, and senescence-associated impairment of alveolar repair. Traditional single-target anti-inflammatory strategies are difficult to reverse this microenvironmental deterioration. Based on evidence from literature mining, network pharmacology, molecular docking, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation

Plasma membrane impacts of particulate matter on the blood-brain barrier.

The potential for inhaled environmental particulate matter (PM) to cause neuronal effects is a growing concern, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. There are two potential exposure routes via transport though the olfactory nerve transport and direct interaction of the circulating PM with the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This study investigated the plausible mechanism by which PM, once in circulation, could cross BBB's via the endotheliocytes, specifically focusing on the role of the plasma membrane. An in vitro BBB model (hCMEC/D3 cells) was exposed to ambient London PM (PM10, PM2.5) a

Parabronchial remodeling in chicks in response to embryonic hypoxia.

The embryonic development of parabronchi occurs mainly during the second half of incubation in precocious birds, which makes this phase sensitive to possible morphological modifications induced by O2 supply limitation. Thus, we hypothesized that hypoxia during the embryonic phase of parabronchial development induces morphological changes that remain after hatching. To test this hypothesis, chicken embryos were incubated entirely (21 days) under normoxia or partially under hypoxia (15% O2 during days 12 to 18). Lung structures, including air capillaries, blood capillaries, infundibula, atria, p

A bibliometric and systematic review of the global impact of air pollution on Alzheimer's disease: Insights from cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence highlights the potential role of environmental factors, particularly air pollution, in the development and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Air pollutants may contribute to neurodegenerative processes through mechanisms such as oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and disruption of the blood-brain barrier. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to systematically evaluate global cohort studies investigating the association between long-term exposure to key air pollutants-specifically particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3)-and the risk of A

A review of the possible associations between ambient PM2.5 exposures and the development of Alzheimer's disease.

PM2.5 particles in air pollution have been widely considered associated with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Recent studies have shown that PM2.5 can also cause central nervous system (CNS) diseases, including a variety of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Activation of microglia in the central nervous system can lead to inflammatory and neurological damage. PM2.5 will reduce the methylation level of DNA and affect epigenetics. PM2.5 enters the human body through a variety of pathways to have pathological effects on CNS. For example, PM2.5 can destroy the i

Moisturizers for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions.

The maintenance of normal hydration is an important function of the skin. The stratum corneum provides an antimicrobial, antioxidant, and UV barrier and plays an integral role in maintaining skin hydration. Environmental factors and disease states may compromise the barrier function of the stratum corneum, leading to excessively dry skin. Evidence supports the use of moisturizers in the treatment of various skin conditions, and a wide variety of these products are currently available. The presence of moisturizing agents in a compound, however, may not guarantee optimal moisturization effects.

Respiratory distress syndrome in copper deficiency: an experimental model developed in rats.

An experimental model has been developed to investigate the effect of copper deficiency on lung maturity in the newborn rat. Three groups of female Sprague-Dawley rats were used: the copper-deficient group was fed with a copper-free diet; the control group received a copper-adequate diet, and the pair-fed group was fed with a limited copper diet. After gestation and delivery, 35% of the newborn copper-deficient group showed respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). The neonatal lungs were isolated and processed for ultrastructural and biochemical study: A greater thickness of the air-blood barrier

Endothelial barrier dysfunction and oxidative stress: roles for nitric oxide?

Endothelial dysfunction has an important role to play in the pathophysiology of human vascular disease. The maintenance of barrier function is critical to the role of vascular endothelium in cardiovascular haemostasis and this function can be compromised by inflammatory mediators, cytokines or oxidants. Under conditions of oxidative stress a variety of reactive oxygen species (ROS) may be generated, which increase the permeability of the endothelial monolayer to fluid, macromolecules and inflammatory cells. The endothelium-derived nitric oxide radical (NO), whose physiological actions include

Airborne particulate matter and the lung-brain axis: unraveling the neuroinflammatory cascade from alveolar irritation to microglial activation.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological evidence increasingly substantiates a correlation between chronic exposure to airborne environmental pollutants—specifically fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) and diesel exhaust particles—and the prevalence of neurological disorders. While the respiratory consequences of these exposures are well-documented, the mechanisms by which pulmonary distress communicates pathogenic signals to the central nervous system remain complex and multifaceted. SCOPE & REVIEW: This review explores the "Lung-Brain Axis" as a critical conduit for neurotoxicity. We synthesize current findi

Alveolar vascularization of the lung in a lamb model of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Pulmonary hypoplasia and pulmonary hypertension are factors limiting the survival of infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). A reduction in the number of pre-acinar pulmonary vessels and increased muscularization are the structural lesions implicated as causes of irreversible hypoxemia. Whether there is a reduction in the number of air-blood barriers, which represent the capillary surface area of the lung involved in gas exchange, is unknown. We sought to determine if the lungs of CDH lambs have: (1) a reduction in total capillary surface area proportionate to the reduction in the
