Differential detection of tick-borne pathogens in human platelets and whole blood using microfluidic PCR.

The tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) with adhesive phenotype can use platelets for dissemination and colonization of distant tissues and organs, and it has been shown that they can be found concentrated in the platelet fraction of blood. This study shows the differential presence of TBPs in samples of human platelet fraction (n = 68), whole blood samples (n = 68) and ticks collected (n = 76) from the same individuals, using an unbiased high-throughput pathogen detection microfluidic system. The clinical symptoms were characterized in enrolled patients. In patients with suspected TBP infection, sero

Zoonotic Blood-Borne Pathogens in Non-Human Primates in the Neotropical Region: A Systematic Review.

Background: Understanding which non-human primates (NHPs) act as a wild reservoir for blood-borne pathogens will allow us to better understand the ecology of diseases and the role of NHPs in the emergence of human diseases in Ecuador, a small country in South America that lacks information on most of these pathogens. Methods and principal findings: A systematic review was carried out using PRISMA guidelines from 1927 until 2019 about blood-borne pathogens present in NHPs of the Neotropical region (i.e., South America and Middle America). Results: A total of 127 publications were found in sever

Highly Multiplex Real-Time PCR-Based Screening for Blood-Borne Pathogens on an OpenArray Platform.

Molecular diagnostics are increasingly used in the blood bank industry. A device that can combine simultaneous detection of multiple targets with the flexibility of inclusion of emerging pathogens is desirable for testing blood products. A highly multiplexed blood-borne pathogen panel (BBPP) using dual-label probe chemistry (TaqMan assays) was developed for simultaneous detection and discrimination of 17 viral pathogens in human plasma samples and 13 bacterial and protozoan pathogens in human blood samples on the OpenArray platform. The custom BBPP OpenArray plate was tested for specificity an

The role of routine screening in blood-borne pathogens in Chinese patients undergoing joint arthroplasty.

OBJECTIVES: Surgeons face a substantial risk of infection because of the occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens (BBPs) from patients undergoing high-risk orthopaedic procedures. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of four BBPs among patients undergoing joint arthroplasty in Shanghai, China. In addition, we evaluated the significance of pre-operative screening by calculating a cost-to-benefit ratio. METHODS: A retrospective observational study of pre-operative screening for BBPs, including hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Trep

Parasites and vector-borne pathogens in client-owned dogs in Albania. Blood pathogens and seroprevalences of parasitic and other infectious agents.

Knowledge on the epidemiology of parasitic and vector-borne infections is still very limited for Albania, a country located in the Balkan Peninsula in southeast Europe. Recent publications indicated prevalence rates of up to 52% for vector-borne infections in less-cared dogs in Albania. To provide data on the epidemiological situation in dogs under veterinary care, a total of 602 client-owned dogs presented to four small animal clinics between March 2010 and April 2011 in Tirana, Albania, were screened by examination of Giemsa-stained blood smears, PCR, and serological methods for the presence

Molecular detection of vector-borne pathogens in blood and splenic samples from dogs with splenic disease.

BACKGROUND: The spleen is a highly perfused organ involved in the immunological control and elimination of vector-borne pathogens (VBP), which could have a fundamental role in the pathogenesis of splenic disease. This study aimed to evaluate certain VBP in samples from dogs with splenic lesions. METHODS: Seventy-seven EDTA-blood and 64 splenic tissue samples were collected from 78 dogs with splenic disease in a Mediterranean area. Babesia spp., Bartonella spp., Ehrlichia/Anaplasma spp., Hepatozoon canis, Leishmania infantum, hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. and Rickettsia spp. were targeted using P

High prevalence of vector-borne pathogens in the blood of clinically healthy dogs in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniosis and other canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) pose a major risk for veterinary and public health globally, especially where humans and dogs live in close proximity. Although mosquito and tick vectors are abundant in Hong Kong, surveillance for CVBDs has been limited. METHODS: A serological and molecular survey of 158 healthy owned (n = 64) and free-roaming unowned (n = 94) dogs with outdoor access in Hong Kong was performed to determine CVBD prevalence. Point-of-care (POC) immunoassays were used to detect (i) antibodies to Leishmania spp., Ehrlichia spp., and Anapla

Exposure to vector-borne pathogens in candidate blood donor and free-roaming dogs of northeast Italy.

BACKGROUND: Many vector-borne pathogens including viruses, bacteria, protozoa and nematodes occur in northeast Italy, representing a potential threat to animal and human populations. Little information is available on the circulation of the above vector-borne pathogens in dogs. This work aims to (i) assess exposure to and circulation of pathogens transmitted to dogs in northeast Italy by ticks, sandflies, and mosquitoes, and (ii) drive blood donor screening at the newly established canine blood bank of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie. METHODS: Blood samples from 150 pr

Catastrophe model for the exposure to blood-borne pathogens and other accidents in health care settings.

Catastrophe models, which describe and predict discontinuous changes in system state variables, were used to model the exposure to blood and bodily fluids and more conventional occupational accidents among 1708 health care workers. Workers at three hospitals completed a survey measuring HIV-relevant exposures (needlesticks, cuts, splashes, contact with open wounds), the accident rate for broadly-defined injuries, and several occupationally relevant themes: safety climate, shift work, depression symptoms, work pace, verbal abuse, and professional group membership. A cusp (cubic polynomial) mode

New emerging blood-borne hepatitis viral pathogens and the feasibility of passing thorough the placenta: an appraisal.

In countries with a high prevalence of blood-borne pathogen infections, transmission to infants commonly occurs from an infected mother during pregnancy. Maternal diseases caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites may sometimes be transmitted vertically. For many pathogens, several questions remain unanswered about the pathogenesis of vertical transmission, the relative risk associated with each mode of transmission, the rate of transmission from mother to child, and the factors that might contribute to the efficiency of transmission. There is also a need to quantify the contribution made by i

Molecular detection, diagnostic evaluation, and genetic characterization of blood-borne pathogens in fighting bulls from southern Thailand.

Fighting bulls are native cattle bred for traditional contests with economic and recreational significance in southern Thailand. These animals may be infected with several blood-borne and vector-borne pathogens, including Anaplasma spp., hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. (hemoplasmas), Babesia spp., Theileria spp., and Trypanosoma spp. Blood cytology is commonly used for diagnosis because it is simple and inexpensive; however, its diagnostic performance can be limited, particularly in carrier animals with low parasitemia. This study screened blood-borne pathogens in fighting bulls (n = 198) from sout

No molecular detection of tick-borne pathogens in the blood of patients with erythema migrans in Belgium.

BACKGROUND: A number of tick-borne pathogens circulate in the Belgian tick population in addition to the causative agent of Lyme borreliosis. However, so far, only a few patients with tick-borne diseases other than Lyme borreliosis have been reported in Belgium. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of other human tick-borne infections in Belgium and their possible clinical manifestation. METHODS: Patients with fever (> 37.5 °C) after a tick bite or those with erythema migrans (EM) were included in the study. EDTA-blood samples were screened for the presence of DNA from Borr

Molecular characterisation of tick-borne pathogens in cattle in kenya: insights from blood, ticks, and skin swab analyses.

BACKGROUND: Ticks pose a major threat to livestock and human health in sub-Saharan Africa, with climate change and pastoral movements fueling their spread. Few studies have integrated multiple sample types to characterize tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) in cattle in Kenya. This knowledge gap hinders the development of effective surveillance and control strategies, leaving vulnerable populations and their livestock susceptible to these persistent threats. METHODS: We screened 280 bovine blood samples, 589 tick pools, and 284 non-invasive skin swabs from cattle in northern (Marsabit) and southern (
