Development of the body dysmorphic disorder examination.

The Body Dysmorphic Disorder Examination (BDDE) is a semi-structured clinical interview designed to diagnose body dysmorphic disorder and to measure symptoms of severely negative body image. It tape into preoccupation with and negative evaluation of appearance, self-consciousness and embarrassment, excessive importance given to appearance in self-evaluation, avoidance of activities, body camouflaging, and body checking. The BDDE had adequate internal consistency and test-retest and interrater reliability. It correlated with measures of body image, negative self-esteem, and psychological sympto

Pharmacologic treatment of body dysmorphic disorder.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a preoccupation with an imagined or slight defect in appearance, has been described for more than a century and reported around the world. However, investigation into the treatment of this distressing and impairing disorder is just beginning. Available data on the pharmacologic treatment of BDD suggest that it often responds to serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs), which may be preferentially effective for this disorder. Augmentation of SRIs with buspirone and neuroleptics, as well as combinations of SRIs, also appear promising. Available data also suggest that

Mental Disorders: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by recurrent intrusive thoughts, images, or urges (ie, obsessions) and repetitive mental acts or behaviors (ie, compulsions). Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a chronic preoccupation with perceived flaws in physical appearance that leads to repetitive behaviors (ie, rituals). The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fifth Edition) (DSM-5) places both disorders under a new category, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, along with hoarding disorder, excoriation disorder, and trichotillomania. Both OCD and BDD cause ma

The links between body dysmorphic disorder and eating disorders.

The aim of the study was to search for a body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) period preceding the symptoms meeting the criteria of either anorexia or bulimia nervosa, and an evaluation of the prevalence of BDD symptoms in a control group of girls without any eating disorder. Ninety-three girls (12-21 years old ) were included in the study (36 with anorexia nervosa, 17 with bulimia nervosa and 40 healthy controls). The Structured Clinical Interview (SCID), including the BDD module, and a novel questionnaire (for the presence of preceding life events) were used. We found the symptoms of BDD in 25% of

[Body dysmorphic disorder as an obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder].

Considerable evidence supports consideration of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder as related disorders. BDD may share common phenomenological and neurobiological features with OGD and other disorders characterized by repetitive thoughts and behaviors and mediated by serotonin dysfunction. Within this substrate, specific psychological and sociological factors may shape the specific BDD syndrome. Further research incorporating dimensional models of these disorders, may delineate specific similarities and differences.

Exaggerated Self-Referencing in Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

The self-prioritisation effect demonstrates that people have a bias to learn and process self-relevant information compared to other-relevant information. This tendency may provide a tool to understand how body image and perception become disrupted in people with such a preoccupation with self-related perceptions, behaviours, and affect (body dysmorphic disorder [BDD]). Using an associative learning matching paradigm, participants were presented with geometric shapes that were paired with either themself, a named friend, or an unnamed stranger. Participants were presented with different label-

Body Dysmorphic Disorder in Dermatology: a Systematic Review.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a psychiatric diagnosis of an impairing condition in which the patient is preoccupied with a slight or perceived defect in their appearance. BDD patients have a higher rate of psychiatric comorbidities than the background population which include obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, anxiety and suicide. It causes distress and affects the patient's quality of life. It is previously found that the prevalence of patients that suffers from BDD is higher among dermatology patients than in the background population. To create an overview of the original

New perspectives in the treatment of body dysmorphic disorder.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a disabling illness with a high worldwide prevalence. Patients demonstrate a debilitating preoccupation with one or more perceived defects, often marked by poor insight or delusional convictions. Multiple studies have suggested that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and various cognitive behavioral therapy modalities are effective first-line treatments in decreasing BDD severity, relieving depressive symptoms, restoring insight, and increasing quality of life. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have also recently been shown to be effective for relap

Traumatic experiences in individuals with body dysmorphic disorder.

Individuals with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are excessively concerned about perceived defects in their appearance (e.g., blemishes on their skin). BDD is a severe mental disorder often associated with increased suicidality as well as significant social and occupational interference (e.g., J Clin Psychiatry 2005;66:717-725). Recently, investigators have begun to explore variables that might function as risk factors in the development of BDD, such as traumatic experiences (e.g., Child Abuse Negl 2006;30:1105-1115). As such, one of the goals of the current study was to examine the role of ear

Childhood abuse and neglect in body dysmorphic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: No published studies have examined childhood abuse and neglect in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). This study examined the prevalence and clinical correlates of abuse and neglect in individuals with this disorder. METHODS: Seventy-five subjects (69.3% female, mean age=35.4+/-12.0) with DSM-IV BDD completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and were interviewed with other reliable and valid measures. RESULTS: Of these subjects, 78.7% reported a history of childhood maltreatment: emotional neglect (68.0%), emotional abuse (56.0%), physical abuse (34.7%), physical neglect (33.3%), an

Diagnosis and treatment of body dysmorphic disorder in adolescents.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is an underrecognized and underdiagnosed problem that is relatively common among adolescents. Although the onset of the disorder occurs in adolescence, BDD research in child and adolescent psychiatry is relatively limited. Body dysmorphic disorder has a high rate of co-morbidity with depression and suicide, which indicates important implications for prompt diagnosis and treatment in adolescents with BDD. Effective treatment options include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy with serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs). This paper provides a brief

Body dysmorphic disorder symptoms in patients with melasma.

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by extreme preoccupation with non-existent or minor defects in appearance, disrupting daily functioning. Melasma is a common concern among BDD patients with dermatological conditions. This study aimed to estimate the incidence and characteristics of BDD in patients with melasma, and compare the psychological condition of patients and age- and sex-matched healthy controls. METHODS: Patients with melasma and healthy controls were screened using the BDD Questionnaire (BDDQ), Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and S

Body dysmorphic disorder: A diagnostic challenge in adolescence.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a chronic and disabling condition that is characterised by distressing preoccupations with perceived defects in one's own appearance, which might be slight or not observable to others. It is considered to be an obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder and is associated with depression, feelings of shame and poor quality of life. It is primarily a disorder of childhood or adolescent onset, and sub-clinical BDD symptoms begin, on average, several years before an individual's symptoms meet full criteria for the disorder. Here we report the case of an adolescent adm

Cued panic attacks in body dysmorphic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a common and often severe disorder. Clinical observations suggest that panic attacks triggered by BDD symptoms may be common. However, to our knowledge, no study has examined such panic attacks in BDD. We investigated the prevalence, clinical features, and correlates of BDD- triggered panic attacks in individuals with this disorder. METHODS: Panic attacks and other variables were assessed using reliable and valid measures in 76 individuals with lifetime DSM-IV BDD. RESULTS: 28.9% (95% CI, 18.5%-39.4%) of participants reported lifetime panic attac

Delusional versus nondelusional body dysmorphic disorder.

This study assessed demographic and clinical features in 65 subjects with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and compared the 39 (60%) with the delusional form (receiving an additional diagnosis of delusional disorder, somatic type) with those who did not meet delusionality criteria. Delusional and nondelusional patients did not statistically differ on most demographic and clinical variables. Delusional patients, however, had significantly more severe BDD symptoms at both baseline and follow-up assessments than those of nondelusional patients. Furthermore, poorer insight was significantly associat
