Relationships of body size with breast cancer.

Three measures of body size (weight, height, and obesity) were compared with other patient characteristics in 852 operable node-positive breast cancer patients (age, 25-74 years) newly diagnosed in the United States. Weight and obesity were significantly associated with number of positive nodes. In postmenopausal women, weight and obesity were weakly associated with estrogen receptors. Observed weight and height distributions were compared with national averages and found to be highly aberrant in older women. There was an excess of tall woman (greater than or equal to 66 inches) among the stud

Causal associations of birth body size and adult body size with systemic lupus erythematosus: a bidirectional mendelian randomization study.

OBJECTIVE: Body size is associated with the onset of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, the evidence for this association is inconclusive. In this study, we aimed to investigate the causal relationship between body size and SLE. METHOD: We performed a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis that utilized summary statistics sourced from genome-wide association study (GWAS) data obtained from the IEU Open GWAS project website. The inverse variance weighting (IVW) method was used to evaluate the causality, and four additional MR methods were used to supplement the IVW resul

Differences in cardiac geometry in relation to body size among neonates with abnormal prenatal growth and body size at birth.

OBJECTIVES: Both excessive and restricted fetal growth are associated with changes in cardiac geometry and function at birth. There are significant issues when indexing cardiac parameters for body size in the neonatal period. The aims of this study were to determine to what extent cardiac geometry is dependent on body size in term and preterm neonates with restricted or excessive fetal growth and how this is affected by adiposity. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of neonates born between 31 and 42 weeks of gestation, divided into three groups: (1) small-for-gestational age (SGA, birt

Body size, body composition, and cardiovascular disease risk factors in NFL players.

AIMS: We characterized the size of active National Football League (NFL) players by multiple criteria and analyzed their relation to traditional cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors with the objective of further clarifying the occurrence of cardiovascular risk factors in different player positions. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in professional athletic training facilities. The participants were 504 active veteran players from a convenience sample of 12 NFL teams, grouped as interior linemen (IL) or all others (AO). Comparisons were made between the NFL groups and an a

Heat Intolerance, Body Size, and Return to Duty.

BACKGROUND: Exertional heatstroke affects athletes and soldiers and can lead to temporary heat intolerance. The heat tolerance test (HTT) was developed to assist in the return-to-duty decisions of military personnel. Although there are several possible causes for heat intolerance, a soldier who fails the test is prevented from returning to serve in a front-line combat unit, regardless of the underlying reason.CASE REPORT: A 19-yr-old special infantry male soldier with unremarkable medical history collapsed during an afternoon hand-to-hand combat training session in the gym. Association between body size and colorectal adenoma recurrence.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Obesity has been associated with increased risk for colorectal adenoma, although its role as a risk factor after polypectomy for recurrence is unclear. Therefore, we sought to evaluate the effect of anthropometric measures of obesity on adenoma after polypectomy. METHODS: Subjects with baseline adenomas (n = 2465) and follow-up colonoscopy data were drawn from 2 randomized trials designed to prevent adenoma recurrence. RESULTS: Over a mean follow-up period of 3.1 years presence of a body mass index (BMI) > or = 30 kg/m2 was associated with a nonsignificant 17% increase in

Validation of body size information on driver's licenses.

Weight and height values measured in a population-based case-control study of breast cancer conducted in Hawaii were used to validate body size information recorded on driver's licenses. It is concluded that this information is sufficiently accurate to justify the use of driver's license registration files as a means of assembling large prospective or historical cohorts to study the health hazards of obesity.

Body size, reproductive factors, and breast cancer survival.

Mortality rates among 838 white female breast cancer patients were examined for relationships to personal characteristics assessed at time of diagnosis. These included weight and body mass index, oral contraceptive use, and prior menstrual and reproductive events. Multivariate analyses were used to determine the importance of these characteristics in predicting death rates specific for age and extent of disease at time of diagnosis. Weight was associated with poor prognosis among premenopausal patients, but not among postmenopausal patients. Premenopausal women weighing more than 140 lbs at di

Body size and survival in premenopausal breast cancer.

The survival experience of 582 women with premenopausal breast cancer was examined to determine whether prognosis was related to body size or to demographic and reproductive factors. During the follow-up period 228 patients died and 18 emigrated or were lost to follow-up. Usual body weight, reported at the time of diagnosis, was a strong predictor of survival, with a statistically significant trend towards lower survival with increasing weight. Height and obesity (Quetelet index) were not significantly related to survival, although the tallest women and the most obese women appeared to fare wo

Chewing efficiency and body size of kid goats.

Thirty-two observations were made on 27 goats (18 mature, nonlactating females and 9 doe kids) to study the relationship among metabolic body size (body weight X 75), cell wall constituent intake, and chewing efficiency. A jaw motion recorder determined the minutes spent eating and ruminating during 24 h. Greater cell wall intake increased the amount of cell wall chewed per minute. Body size was directly related to cell wall eaten and ruminated per minute. In 2- and 3-mo-old kids, incomplete development of rumen function and body size both appeared to affect chewing efficiency. The chewing eff

Vertebral body size in lumbar spinal canal stenosis.

The transverse and sagittal diameters of the lumbar vertebral bodies have been compared in patients with symptoms and myelographic findings consistent with stenosis of the lumbar canal, in patients with some narrowing of the lumbar canal, and in patients without clinical or myelographic indication of stenosis. No significant difference in the measured diameters was found.

Endoreduplication underlies body size variation in monomorphic ants.

BACKGROUND: In ants, morphological variation is particularly important, as it constitutes a key mechanism underlying the division of labor. Despite this, relatively few studies have addressed the proximate cellular mechanisms responsible for worker size variation. Endoreduplication represents a promising contributor to morphological diversity, as it is a process with a well-established cellular basis. METHODS: In this study, we investigated whether endoreduplication can account for variation in body size in monomorphic ants, analogous to patterns previously reported in polymorphic species. We

Ciliary body size in chronic angle-closure glaucoma.

To examine the size of the ciliary body stroma (CBS) in dependence of the morphology of the anterior chamber angle in enucleated human eyes, we histomorphometrically examined human enucleated eyes. The study included 107 eyes (with a mean axial length of 25.1 ± 2.8 mm (range 21.0-36.0 mm). The anterior chamber angle was open in 68 eyes and it was closed and endothelialized in 39 eyes. Physiological constraints on body size distributions in Crocodyliformes.

At least 26 species of crocodylian populate the globe today, but this richness represents a minute fraction of the diversity and disparity of Crocodyliformes. Fossil forms are far more varied, spanning from erect, fully terrestrial species to flippered, fully marine species. To quantify the influence of a marine habitat on the directionality, rate, and variance of evolution of body size in Crocodyliformes and thereby identify underlying selective pressures, we compiled a database of body sizes for 264 fossil and modern species of crocodyliform covering terrestrial, semi-aquatic, and marine hab

Large-scale ocean connectivity and planktonic body size.

Global patterns of planktonic diversity are mainly determined by the dispersal of propagules with ocean currents. However, the role that abundance and body size play in determining spatial patterns of diversity remains unclear. Here we analyse spatial community structure - β-diversity - for several planktonic and nektonic organisms from prokaryotes to small mesopelagic fishes collected during the Malaspina 2010 Expedition. β-diversity was compared to surface ocean transit times derived from a global circulation model, revealing a significant negative relationship that is stronger than environm

Carotid body size on CTA: correlation with comorbidities.

AIM: To test the hypothesis that computed tomographic angiography (CTA) can identify carotid body enlargement in patients with sympathetically mediated diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all patients obtaining CTAs of the cervical vasculature at University of Utah Health Sciences Center over a 6-month period was performed. Widest axial measurements of both carotid bodies were performed on a picture archiving and communication system (PACS). Statistical analysis was then performed to compare the mean carotid body size between control patients and patients with dia

Relationship between septal body size and septal deviation.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have described inferior turbinate hypertrophy compensatory to a septal deviation. The septal body contains vasoactive tissue that may behave in a manner similar to the inferior turbinate. The septal body, situated in the nasal valve region, may undergo changes that alter nasal anatomy and airflow patterns. The goal was to compare the size of the septal body to the laterality of septal deviation. The aim was to determine whether there is a correlation between the laterality of septal deviation and laterality of septal body prominence. METHODS: Measurements were obt
