Body weight gain rather than body weight variability associated with increased risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Weight loss, the most established therapy for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is frequently followed by weight regain and fluctuation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether body weight change and variability were independent risk factors for incident NAFLD. We conducted a longitudinal cohort study. Among the 1907 participants, incident NAFLD occurred in 420 (22.0%) cases during median follow-up of 5.6 years. In the multivariate analysis, there was no significant association between weight variability and the risk of incident NAFLD. The risk of incident NAFLD was significan

Brain weight-body weight ratio in sudden infant death syndrome revisited.

AIMS: To determine whether the brain-body weight ratio is increased in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). METHODS: Review of autopsy files from Forensic Science SA, South Australia was undertaken over an eight-year period from 1999 to 2006, with classification of cases according to the San Diego definition. Sudden and/or unexpected deaths in previously healthy infants due to asphyxia or infection were selected as controls. RESULTS: There were 42 SIDS cases and 25 controls. The SIDS cases were aged from 1 to 42 weeks (mean: 16.26 ± 1.5 weeks) with a male to female ratio of 26:16. The contro

Postmortem lung weight/body weight standards for term and preterm infants.

Assessment of lung development is a crucial component of the perinatal autopsy, especially in preterm infants. In current pathology practice, the diagnosis of lung hypoplasia in very premature infants (<28 weeks of gestation) is based on a lung weight/body weight ratio (LW/BW) of 1.5% or less. While useful to confirm the presence of marked pulmonary hypoplasia, the 1.5% threshold may be too stringent to detect more subtle degrees of pulmonary hypoplasia, as seen in association with rupture of membranes. The aim of this study was to establish reference values for postmortem LW/BW in preterm and

Daptomycin Dosing Based on Adjusted Body Weight in Obese Patients versus Actual Body Weight: A Multicentre Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Daptomycin-approved dosing is based on actual body weight (ABW). However, the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of daptomycin are altered in obese patients, leading to increased daptomycin exposure owing to incomplete distribution into excess body tissues. Data regarding the use of alternative weight descriptors for daptomycin dosing are limited. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of daptomycin in obese patients by using adjusted body weight (AdjBW). METHODS: This retrospective multicenter cohort study in Saudi Arabia compared the outcomes of obese patie

Comparison of Outcomes of Kidney Transplantation From Extremely Low Body Weight ≤5kg Versus Larger Body Weight Pediatric Donors.

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplantation from donors who weigh ≤5 kg is performed at only a few transplant centers owing to the high complication and low graft survival rates associated with this approach. METHODS: We retrospectively compared the results of kidney transplantation at our center between January 2015 and December 2019 based on the following pediatric donor criteria: donor body weight ≤5 kg (n=32), 5 kg< donor weight ≤20 kg (n=143), and donor weight >20 kg (n=110). We also perform subgroup analysis of kidney transplantation outcomes from ≤5 kg donors, using conventional (dual separate

Maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index, gestational weight gain influence birth weight.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that pre-pregnancy body mass index and gestational weight gain have impact on pregnancy and birth weight, yet whether maternal gestational weight gain has a differential effect on the rates of adverse birth weight among women with different pre-pregnancy body mass index categories are unknown. METHODS: We selected 1617 children matched with their mothers as study subjects. The subjects were divided into three categories: weight gain below the American Institute of Medicine guidelines, weight gain within the American Institute of Medicine guidelines and weight gai

Excess Body Weight and Gastrointestinal Cancer Risk.

BACKGROUND: Excess body weight (EBW), defined as a body mass index (BMI) ≥25 kg/m2, has become the second most important as well as a potentially modifiable risk factor for cancer in many industrialized countries. The more excess weight people have, the higher the risk of certain cancers. Over the past several decades, EBW has been increasing globally not only among adults, but also among children and adolescents. SUMMARY: EBW is causally associated with colorectal, esophageal (adenocarcinoma), gastric (cardia), pancreatic, biliary and hepatocellular cancer. EBW when combined with tobacco smo

Particulate matter and early childhood body weight.

Concerns over adverse effects of air pollution on children's health have been rapidly rising. However, the effects of air pollution on childhood growth remain to be poorly studied. We investigated the association between prenatal and postnatal exposure to PM10 and children's weight from birth to 60months of age. This birth cohort study evaluated 1129 mother-child pairs in South Korea. Children's weight was measured at birth and at six, 12, 24, 36, and 60months. The average levels of children's exposure to particulate matter up to 10μm in diameter (PM10) were estimated during pregnancy and duri

Body weight and sensitivity of screening mammography.

AIM: Obese women tend to participate less in breast cancer screening than normal weight women. However, obese women have fattier breast than normal weight women, and screening mammography works better in fatty than in dense breasts. One might, therefore, hypothesise that obese women would actually benefit more from screening than other women. METHODS: We combined data from the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health study and the organised population-based screening mammography programme in Copenhagen, Denmark. Women were categorised according to body mass index (BMI) (<20; 20 to <25; 25 to <30; 30 to

Body weight gain and deep brain stimulation.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical technique that has now been available for some 25 years. It is used in the treatment of various motor disorders, e.g. Parkinson's disease (PD), essential tremor and dystonia, and neuropsychiatric illnesses, e.g. obsessive-compulsive disorder and Tourette syndrome. The surgical targets of DBS include the thalamic ventralis intermedius nucleus (Vim), the globus pallidus internus (GPi) and more recently the subthalamic nucleus (STN), currently considered as the reference target in the treatment of PD. In the last ten years, most studies in PD patien

Jerk analysis of active body-weight-transfer.

Recent studies have shown that whole-body vibration improves posture and gait control in stroke patients. Patients with degenerative cerebellar disease suffer from ataxic gait also which is characterised by the variation of gait pattern. Our interest is to test whole-body vibration as a method for rehabilitation treatment in cerebellar patients and to assess the success of the treatment using dynamic tests. The aim of this study was to introduce a method for quantifying movement dynamics during an active voluntary sidestep that results in a body-weight-transfer. Subjects had to perform a step

[Development of body weight during antidiabetic treatment].

Antidiabetic treatment of persons with type I or 2 diabetes mellitus is usually accompanied by body-weight gain. This is because any improvement in metabolism is associated with a decrease in glycosuria: Long-persisting loss of calories via urine is decreased. Furthermore, insulin has an antilipolytic effect simulates lipogenesis and promotes fluid retention. Hypoglycemia always necessitates additional intake of carbohydrates and thus also favors weight gain. During antidiabetic treatment with metformin the increase in body weight is significantly less than during treatment with sulphonylurea

[Relationship between diaphragm weight and body composition].

To study the relationship between diaphragm weight and body composition, we measured fat body mass and lean body mass by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (XR-26, Norland), and weighed the diaphragms of patients at autopsy. The subjects were 22 patients with various diseases (13 men and 9 women, aged 72.6 +/- 9.5 years). In 8 of the patients, respiratory muscle strength was assessed with maximal pressure at the mouth. The diaphragm weight was 185.2 +/- 58.2 g and it correlated significantly with lean body mass (r = 0.77, r = 0.73, p < 0.01). Maximal inspiratory pressure at TLC correlated signif

Putting body weight and osteoporosis into perspective.

Osteoporosis is characterized by a reduction in bone mineral density (BMD). Women more than men are at risk for osteoporosis-related fractures, especially in the wrists, lumbar spine, and hips. Numerous diet and lifestyle factors, including body weight, influence BMD, and in turn, fracture risk. BMD in the total body, hip, lumbar spine, and radius is weakly to moderately correlated to body weight, fat mass, and lean body mass in adolescent, perimenopausal, and elderly women, possibly as the result of stress on the skeleton from the mechanical loading of body weight alone. In addition, greater

Misperception of Body Weight After Childhood Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Misperception of body weight can negatively impact the weight management efforts of childhood cancer survivors (CCSs). Both being overweight or underweight are associated with chronic health conditions commonly observed in CCS; therefore, accurate weight perception is critical for reducing long-term health risks. AIM: To assess the agreement between objectively measured body mass index (BMI) and self-perceived body weight in adult CCS, and to identify predictors of BMI underestimation and overestimation. METHODS: In this prospective, multicenter cohort study, we invited CCS aged

Automated body weight measurement using computed tomography.

Computed tomography (CT) images provide detailed information on tissue composition and density. Body weight estimation from CT can be highly relevant in emergency and forensic contexts where conventional weighing is impractical or unavailable-for example, due to unconscious or immobilized patients, lack of appropriate equipment, or the necessity to preserve forensic trace evidence. An automated method for body weight estimation using antemortem and postmortem CT data from clinical scanners was evaluated. Two retrospective cohorts were included: 30 forensic postmortem whole-body CT scans and 66
