Leisure-time activity is an important determinant of long-term weight maintenance after weight loss in the Sibutramine Trial on Obesity Reduction and Maintenance (STORM trial).

BACKGROUND: The success rate of long-term maintenance of weight loss in obese patients is usually low. To improve the success rate, determinants of long-term weight maintenance must be identified. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to identify determinants of long-term success in weight maintenance in obese subjects who completed the Sibutramine Trial on Obesity Reduction and Maintenance (n = 261), a multicenter European study of weight loss and weight maintenance in obesity that combines sibutramine treatment with dietary restriction and advice on exercise and behavior. DESIGN: We st

The association between leptin and weight maintenance outcome in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Relapse after weight restoration in anorexia nervosa (AN) is a critical problem. Higher body fat percentage after weight gain has been shown to predict better weight maintenance outcome. Leptin, a fat-derived hormone, has been associated with progress during weight gain, but its association with weight maintenance is unknown. This study aims to determine whether leptin levels after weight restoration in AN are associated with weight maintenance. METHOD: Participants were 41 women with AN hospitalized for inpatient treatment. Participants were evaluated 2-4 weeks after weight restor

A comparison of weight control and weight control plus body image therapy for obese men and women.

Participants were 65 obese men and women who were randomly assigned to either weight control or weight control plus cognitive behavioral body image therapy. Both conditions showed clinically significant improvements in body image at posttreatment and 1-year follow-up. Adding body image therapy to weight control did not result in greater psychological improvements and did not result in better maintenance of body image change when participants regained weight after treatment. Weight loss and maintenance were equivalent between groups. Adding body image therapy did not improve or detract from wei

"The Weight Is Even Worse Than the Cancer": Exploring Weight Preoccupation in Women Treated for Breast Cancer.

Cancer-related changes in body weight are problematic given that excess weight is associated with an increased risk of cancer reoccurrence and mortality. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of weight-concerned women treated for early-stage breast cancer. A purposeful sample of women were selected based on criteria for high weight and body image concerns ( n = 11; Mage = 65.31 ± 10.96 years). Each participant engaged in a one-on-one semi-structured interview. Five themes were identified: weight concerns contributed to psychological distress, prevalent history of

Body weight and the management of lymphoedema.

Overweight and obesity are known risk factors for the development of lymphoedema, and are also well-recognised factors complicating the management of lymphoedema. However, a degree of uncertainty remains regarding the way in which obesity impacts upon the condition, and there is little detail about the practical application of weight management strategies in the population with lymphoedema. This article provides the background for ongoing research into the association between lymphoedema management and obesity. It is hoped that this research will provide important insights into the long-term m

Weight Maintenance up to 48 Weeks in Patients With Carcinoid Syndrome Treated With Telotristat Ethyl: Pooled Data From the Open-Label Extensions of the Phase III Clinical Trials TELESTAR and TELECAST.

Reported incidences of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) appear to be increasing, possibly due to greater disease awareness and increased accuracy of diagnosis. Approximately 20% of patients with NETs develop carcinoid syndrome (CS), which arises from elevated secretion of bioactive compounds, including serotonin, from NETs. This leads to symptoms including diarrhea and flushing, which result in weight loss and are associated with considerable negative impact on patients' quality of life. We previously reported significant weight gain and improved nutritional status in patients with NETs who were t

Pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila MucT for weight loss maintenance in people with overweight and obesity: a controlled randomized trial.

Preclinical research suggests that the mucosal symbiont Akkermansia muciniphila prevents diet-induced obesity. In this randomized controlled trial, adults with overweight/obesity (n = 90) underwent an 8-week low-energy diet for ≥8% weight loss, followed by a 24-week healthy ad libitum diet with daily supplementation of pasteurized A. muciniphila MucT or placebo. The primary outcome was change in body weight during the maintenance period. Here we show that MucT led to lower body weight regain versus placebo at the end of the weight maintenance period (MucT: 1.2 ± 0.7 kg, placebo: 3.2 ± 0.4 kg,

Web-based intervention to promote weight-loss maintenance using an activity monitor: A randomized controlled trial.

The present study examined whether a web-based intervention could promote weight-loss maintenance, after weight loss. The study was a two-phase, 27-month, randomized controlled trial conducted in Ibaraki, Japan, from 2014 to 2017; 133 participants were recruited through local newspaper advertisements. The eligibility criteria were as follows: age of 40-64 years, body mass index of 25-40 kg/m2, and having at least one metabolic syndrome component. In phase 1, a 3-month, group-based weight-loss program was provided to all eligible participants (n = 119). We then randomly assigned (1:1) participa
