A Scoping Review of Instruments Used to Measure Weight and Body Composition in Infants Under 1 Year.

BACKGROUND: This scoping review identified existing outcome measurement instruments (OMIs) for weight and body composition in children ≤ 1 year of age and how they are used in clinical trials. This information will improve outcome selection in future trials. METHODS: We searched the EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and PsycINFO up to September 2023, previous reviews, and the TOPCHILD collaboration registry. Screening was conducted independently in duplicate. We included studies reporting trials including healthy, full-term infants ≤ 1 year of age reporting at least one weight, weight gain, and/or bod

Estimating umbilical catheter insertion depth in newborns using weight or body measurement: a randomised trial.

OBJECTIVE: Incorrectly positioned umbilical venous and arterial catheters (UVC and UAC) are associated with increased rates of complications in newborns. Catheter insertion depth is often estimated using body surface measurement. We wished to determine whether estimating insertion depth of umbilical catheters using birth weight (BW), rather than surface measurements, results in more correctly positioned catheters. INTERVENTIONS/OUTCOME: Newborns were randomised to have UVC and UAC insertion depth estimated using formulae based on BW or using graphs based on shoulder-umbilicus length. The prim

[Birth weight and measurements of various body parts of stillborn calves of a large dairy cattle herd].

Stillborn calves (80 animals) originating from one dairy herd were used for studies on allometric measures in newborn calves. In the first approach some factors were neglected and only the effect of the calves' sex was considered. Differences in mean birthweight between male and female calves were reflected in organ and other body constituent weights too, but with different relations between them. Enlarged thyroid glands could be observed in both sexes but more often in female calves meaning that there is no correlation between thyroid size and body weight. Strong correlations of bones, muscle

[Evolution and weight and body composition determination after therapy for pathological obesity for measuring compliance in (re)-education].

Obesity, and its associated complications, is one of the most costly diseases in modern civilisations. Dieting alone rarely gives good long-term results. The effect of the combination of nutritional education and moderately intensive physical exercise on the evolution of weight and Body composition has been analysed by bio-impedancemetry over a one-year period. Patients could be divided into four groups: patients lost after the 3-week nutritional course, patients neither dieting nor exercising, patients dieting and patients both dieting and exercising. The results for the four groups were the

Normalization factor for the assessment of elbow spasticity with passive stretch measurement: maximum torque VS. body weight.

Spasticity of the elbow was generally assessed by repeated passive stretch movement, including the modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) from physiotherapist, and biomechanics analysis of the movement. The MAS-based method depends on the subjective evaluations and the performance of biomechanics analysis assessment is affected by the individual difference. Therefore, the normalization to reduce the individual difference for the assessment of spasticity is very important. In this study, the elbow spasticity was assessed with MAS by one skillful physiotherapist and biomechanics measurements during repet

Deep-learned estimation of uncertainty in measurements of apparent diffusion coefficient from whole-body diffusion-weighted MRI.

PURPOSE: To use deep learning to calculate the uncertainty in apparent diffusion coefficient (σADC) voxel-wise measurements to clinically impact the monitoring of treatment response and improve the quality of ADC maps. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We use a uniquely designed diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) acquisition protocol that provides gold-standard measurements of σADC to train a deep learning model on two separate cohorts: 16 patients with prostate cancer and 28 patients with mesothelioma. Our network was trained with a novel cost function, which incorporates a perception metric and a b-valu

Arrival cortisol measurement in veal calves and its association with body weight, protein fractions, animal health and performance.

Male dairy calves are exposed to an accumulation of transport, social and environmental stressors while transferred to fattening units. As a consequence, calves show high cortisol concentrations upon arrival at the veal facility. Whether cortisol levels as measured on arrival can be associated with animal health, welfare and production results is currently unknown. The first objective of this prospective cohort study was to determine possible associations of arrival serum cortisol concentration with health and production variables of veal calves and other arrival predictors like body weight an

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to automate volume measurement of pediatric kidneys using Technetium-99m-dimercaptosuccinic acid (99mTc DMSA) SPECT. Assessment of renal size is essential in making an accurate clinical diagnosis and in evaluating normal and abnormal renal growth. Existing techniques for measuring renal length and volume are often observer-dependent and are limited by interobserver variability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An automated method using 99mTc DMSA SPECT was developed to measure renal length, volume, and 2D/3D split renal functions. An adaptive threshold was used

The applicability of a commercial 3DO body scanner in measuring body composition in Chinese adults with overweight and obesity: a secondary analysis based on a weight-loss clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: A commercial three-dimensional optical (3DO) scanning system was reported to be used in body composition assessment. However, the applicability in Chinese adults has yet to be well-studied. METHODS: This secondary analysis was based on a 16-week weight-loss clinical trial with an optional extension to 24 weeks. Waist and hip circumference and body composition were measured by 3DO scanning at each follow-up visit during the study. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was also performed to confirm the reliability of 3DO scanning at each visit. We used Lin's concordance correlation

Impact of body weight and sex in selected dog breeds on the canine adrenal gland dimensions measured by computed tomographic imaging.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to investigate possible influences of body weight and sex on adrenal gland size in endocrinologically healthy dogs. Possible factors influencing the adrenal size are discussed in relation to a universal upper reference value from the literature of 7.4 mm as the thickness in the caudal pole of the adrenal gland. The adrenal size was measured by computed tomography (CT) from 66 normal dogs of six different breeds (Labrador Retriever (n = 16), German Shepherd (n = 10), Boxer (n = 8), Beagle (n = 14), Dachshund (n = 6) and Jack Russell Terrier (n = 12); male n =

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and postmenopausal breast cancer: An evaluation of effect measure modification by body mass index and weight change.

BACKGROUND: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been linked to breast cancer in many, but not all, previous studies. PAHs are lipophilic and stored in fat tissue, which we hypothesized may result in constant low-dose exposure to these carcinogens. No previous studies have evaluated whether obesity modifies associations between multiple measures of PAHs and breast cancer incidence. METHODS: This population-based study included 1,006 postmenopausal women with first primary in situ or invasive breast cancer and 990 age-frequency matched controls. To evaluate effect modification by obesi

Does body weight support improve neural and biomechanical measures during treadmill gait in children with unilateral cerebral palsy?

INTRODUCTION: Body weight support (BWS) treadmill training, commonly utilized to improve gait, has inconsistent evidence of effectiveness across disorders. METHODS: We aimed to comprehensively evaluate its scientific rationale by comparing immediate effects of two weight support levels (20%, 40%) to unsupported (0%) treadmill walking on neural and biomechanical measures in children with unilateral cerebral palsy (CP) and typical development (TD). We hypothesized BWS would demonstrate positive effects only in CP. Participants included 10 with TD and 8 with CP (mean age = 14.6 and 15.4 years, r
