Cervical stabilization by plate and bone fusion.

Anterior stabilization with combined plate and bone fusion was performed after neural decompression on ten patients for spondylotic cervical myelopathy, and for radiculopathy or trauma in three patients. Medial corpectomy was performed at one to four levels. Iliac crest or fibular bone grafts were secured by plates anchored to the graft and adjacent vertebral bodies. All patients were placed in Minerva braces postoperatively. There was successful fusion in all cases, and no graft dislodgement or kyphosis. Early initiation of rehabilitation was achieved. Morbidity occurred in patients with seve

Injury to the orbital plate of the frontal bone.

Twelve cases of fracture of the orbital plate of the frontal bone are reviewed to clarify this important clinical problem and to suggest satisfactory methods of management. Common signs and symptoms include forehead laceration and deformity, and fracture of the frontal sinus. Loss of vision can occur, and in the seeing eye, diplopia can develop in several fields of gaze. Downward or upward projection of the orbital plate of the frontal bone can cause exophthalmos or enophthalmos. Cerebrospinal fluid leak, with or without meningitis, and seizures can also be part of the syndrome. Effective trea

Bone morphological feature extraction for customized bone plate design.

Fractures are difficult to treat because of individual differences in bone morphology and fracture types. Compared to serialized bone plates, the use of customized plates significantly improves the fracture healing process. However, designing custom plates often requires the extraction of skeletal morphology, which is a complex and time-consuming procedure. This study proposes a method for extracting bone morphological features to facilitate customized plate designs. The customized plate design involves three major steps: extracting the morphological features of the bone, representing the unde

[Evaluation of impaction on bone nail and bone plate of the pertrochanteric fracture].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Impaction in pertrochanteric fracture sites is a well known phenomenon; the screw-plate system is designed to stabilise the fracture. Although easier to use, the risk with the nail-plate system is postoperative penetration of the nail into the joint. The present study was conducted to determine the exact conditions of the impaction, and to identify possible ways to improve the nail-plate system. MATERIAL-METHOD: The study included 129 cases of pertrochanteric fracture, excluding sub-trochanteric fractures. All fractures were fixed with a 130 degrees angulated nail-plate.

Salvage of the mandibular staple bone plate following bone infection.

Two cases of previously unreported complications associated with implantation of a mandibular staple bone plate are presented. One was a proven case of chronic osteomyelitis, and the other had a close clinical and radiographic resemblance to osteomyelitis. It is suspected in both cases that complications were due to the use of a dull twist drill that caused local tissue injury. Differences in the clinical courses are believed to be related to the degree of oral hygiene after surgery, with a more severe infection occurring in the patient who maintained extremely poor home care. There is the pos

Supersulfides support bone growth by promoting chondrocyte proliferation in the growth plates.

OBJECTIVES: While chondrocytes have mitochondria, they receive little O2 from the bloodstream. Sulfur respiration, an essential energy production system in mitochondria, uses supersulfides instead of O2. Supersulfides are inorganic and organic sulfides with catenated sulfur atoms and are primarily produced by cysteinyl tRNA synthetase-2 (CARS2). Here, we investigated the role of supersulfides in chondrocyte proliferation and bone growth driven by growth plate chondrocyte proliferation. METHODS: We examined the effects of NaHS, an HS-/H2S donor, and cystine, the cellular source of cysteine, on

Retention of asymptomatic bone plates used for orthognathic surgery and facial fractures.

Over the past three decades there has been an improvement in biomaterials that has virtually replaced the use of stainless steel with titanium and its alloys. Based on the possibility of causing corrosion, toxicity, hypersensitivity, and stress protection, stainless steel should not be considered as a permanent implant in maxillofacial fixation. However, because of their superior corrosion resistance, noncarcinogenicity, hyposensitivity, nontoxicity, and excellent tissue compatibility, titanium and Ti-6Al-4V may be retained as permanent implants in maxillofacial fixation. The stress protection

Effects of retained diaphyseal plates on forearm bone density and grip strength.

Numerous complications have been attributed to elective plate removal following successful treatment of both bone diaphyseal forearm fractures, yet the effects of retained implants are not known. Fourteen patients were reviewed for residual forearm grip strength (FGS) and bone mineral density (BMD) following uneventful union. Patients were analyzed in two groups based upon time from fixation: group I, > 2 years but < or = 5 years, and group II, > 5 years. In group I, mean 2.6 years follow-up (n = 6), mean FGS ratios (patient values/age matched general population means) were 0.65 and 0.77, resp

Bioinspired arrangement of nanohydroxyapatite in chitin matrix for high-strength bone plates.

Biological materials composed of inorganic nanofillers and biopolymeric matrix (e.g., bone and crab shells) generally display excellent mechanical performance. However, conventional chitin/nanohydroxyapatite composites exhibit limited mechanical properties, primarily due to the random distribution and aggregation of nanohydroxyapatites within the chitin matrix. Herein, we develop uniaxially and biaxially oriented chitin/nanohydroxyapatite hydrogels through a facile stretching strategy. The influences of pre-stretching/transversely strains and nanohydroxyapatite morphology (spherical, rod-shape

Comparative Fatigue Analysis of CF-PLA Metamaterial Bone Plates for Orthopaedic Fixation.

Bone plates are widely used in orthopaedic surgery to stabilise fractured bones and support healing following traumatic injuries or osteotomies. However, conventional metallic bone plates suffer from stress shielding and stiffness mismatch with bone, which can hinder optimal healing. Additive manufacturing enables the incorporation of novel metamaterial architectures into polymer-based implants to enhance mechanical properties. The fatigue behaviour of these implants during the healing period is critical to ensuring their structural integrity and long-term performance. In this study, the compr

Population-based design of mandibular plates based on bone quality and morphology.

In this paper we present a new population-based implant design methodology, which advances the state-of-the-art approaches by combining shape and bone quality information into the design strategy. The method enhances the mechanical stability of the fixation and reduces the intra-operative in-plane bending which might impede the functionality of the locking mechanism. The method is presented for the case of mandibular locking fixation plates, where the mandibular angle and the bone quality at screw locations are taken into account. Using computational anatomy techniques, the method automaticall

Surgical repair of skull fractures in four horses using cuttable bone plates.

Three horses with severely comminuted, open facial bone fractures and one horse with a comminuted, open orbital rim fracture were referred for treatment. Severe facial bone asymmetry and epistaxis were apparent in all cases and subcutaneous emphysema was present in two, however physical and neurological examinations were otherwise normal. Radiography and endoscopy were of some use in assessing the degree of damage, although the true extent of the damage was more apparent at surgery. Surgical reduction of the fractures was recommended to maximise cosmetic and functional outcome. After surgical

Locking compression plates versus locking plates for tibial plateau levelling osteotomy in dogs: progression of osteoarthritis, bone healing score and lameness degree.

BACKGROUND: The partial or complete cranial cruciate ligament rupture is a common skeletal disease affecting the stifle joint in dogs. The tibial plateau levelling osteotomy, performed with several synthesis systems, changed the approach to its treatment in dogs. The aim of this study was to compare two types of fixation implants, locking compression system and locking system, evaluating radiographically the progression of osteoarthritis of the stifle joint in dogs with complete cranial cruciate ligament deficiency treated surgically with tibial plateau levelling osteotomy. Moreover, we evalua

A novel biomimetic trabecular bone metal plate for bone repair and osseointegration.

Fracture is one of the most common traumatic diseases in clinical practice, and metal plates have always been the first choice for fracture treatment because of their high strength. However, the bone plates have high elastic modulus and do not match the biomechanics of human bone, which adversely affects callus formation and fracture healing. Moreover, the complex microenvironment in the human body can induce corrosion of metallic materials and release toxic ions, which reduces the biocompatibility of the bone plate, and may necessitate surgical removal of the implant. In this study, tantalum

Elongation of the Long Bones in Humans by the Growth Plates.

The disk of hyaline cartilage that is interposed between the epiphysis and the metaphysis of each of the long bones is responsible for its elongation, and, thus, when the lower limbs are concerned, for increases in bodily height. This so-called growth plate is avascular, aneural, and alymphatic. It consists solely of chondrocytes and an extracellular matrix which the cells elaborate. The growth plate is architectonically striking in so far as the chondrocytes are aligned in strictly vertical columns, which represent the functional units of longitudinal bone growth. The growth process begins wi
