A Comparative Study of Machine Learning Models for Identification of Antiviral Peptides Using Various Encoded Features.

Viruses are a significant threat to human life, as demonstrated by the global COVID-19 pandemic and the Ebola outbreak. Diseases such as smallpox, AIDS, hepatitis, liver cancer, and cervical cancer often caused by the Human Papillomavirus can lead to fatal outcomes. Over the years, extensive research has focused on developing vaccines and antiviral drugs, which have successfully contained and, in some cases, eradicated viral infections. Recently, computational techniques, particularly machine learning algorithms, have made notable progress in identifying potential Antiviral Peptides (AVPs), th

Machine Learning-Guided Design of Catalysts with SO2 Resistance for Low-Temperature NH3-SCR Reaction.

The design of efficient catalysts to mitigate SO2 poisoning in low-temperature Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx (LT-SCR) is challenging. Herein, machine learning (ML) was employed to design catalysts with SO2 resistance. A multidimensional data set containing 242 data points was constructed, including elemental descriptors, catalyst structures, reaction conditions, and SO2 poisoning conditions. Regression models such as XGBoost (XGB) were trained to predict NOx conversions and SO2 resistance over different catalysts. It was found that the electronegativity descriptor (EN.) was the critical

Predictive modeling of asthma drug properties using machine learning and topological indices in a MATLAB based QSPR study.

Machine learning is a vital tool in advancing drug development by accurately predicting the physical, chemical, and biological properties of various compounds. This study utilizes MATLAB program-based algorithms to calculate topological indices and machine learning algorithms to explore their ability to predict the physio-chemical properties of asthma drugs. By combining machine learning with topological indices, we can conduct faster and more precise analyses of drug structures. As we deepen our understanding of the relationship between molecular structure and performance, the integration of

Interpretable machine learning for identifying determinants of high hypertension burden under extreme heat vulnerability: evidence from Maryland, USA.

Extreme heat poses increasing risks to cardiovascular health, yet fine-scale determinants of heat-related hypertension burden remain insufficiently understood. This study examines high hypertension burden in a heat-vulnerability context across 1,385 census tracts in Maryland using an interpretable machine learning framework. An XGBoost model was developed to classify census tracts with high hypertension burden using demographic, socioeconomic, built-environment, heat anomaly, and adaptive-capacity variables. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) were then used to identify key predictors, assess

Early Diagnosis of Hypothyroidism in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia Using Computational Intelligence Techniques.

Hypothyroidism is one of the most common yet underdiagnosed medical conditions in Saudi Arabia. It is more prevalent in aged and pregnant women as well as in patients with diabetes and sleep apnea. Hypothyroidism is characterized by the thyroid gland producing inadequate thyroid hormones, which might result in other chronic illnesses if left untreated. For this reason, this study proposes machine learning techniques to preemptively diagnose this disease using a straightforward clinical dataset from Saudi Arabia. Given the data size, this work serves as proof of concept. Algorithms such as KNN,

Cross-study interpretable machine learning for prediction of NH3 and H2S emissions and identification of operational windows during composting.

Accurate prediction of NH3 and H2S emissions is essential for odor-risk control and process management during composting, but remains challenging because emissions are driven by nonlinear, stage-dependent, and interacting operating conditions. In this study, we developed an interpretable cross-study machine-learning framework for NH3 and H2S prediction using routinely monitored composting variables. A harmonized dataset from 46 published studies provided 542 NH3 and 496 H2S observations after quality control and predictor screening. Five algorithms were benchmarked under study-wise grouped val

Sensitivity of machine learning regression models to data structure and quality in crop yield prediction.

Accurate crop yield prediction is essential for agricultural planning, yet machine learning (ML) models remain highly sensitive to the quality and structure of input data. This study uses simulated datasets to systematically investigate how data structure (sample size and number of predictors), data imperfections (missing values and multicollinearity), and pre-processing methods (imputation techniques and principal component analysis) influence ML regression performance. The performance of ML-based models (RF, SVM, MLR, XGBoost, LightGBM, NNet, and kNN) on the pre-processed data was evaluated.

Machine learning approaches for predicting preventive maintenance costs of expressways in Xinjiang.

With the expansion of high-speed road mileage and the aging of road networks, maintenance workloads have increased dramatically. Accurately forecasting preventive maintenance costs is a practical approach to rationally control maintenance expenditure, enhance capital utilization efficiency, and ensure the long-term stable operation of the road network. However, the current predictive model for preventive maintenance costs fails to adequately account for variations in types of preventive maintenance measures, limiting their ability to capture the actual cost variation patterns under different e

Enhancing Model Generalizability in Medical Artificial Intelligence: Systematic Comparison of Categorical Encoding and Sampling Techniques for Imbalanced Data.

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing use of machine learning (ML) in clinical research, the early stages of data preparation, especially for structured clinical data, often receive limited methodological scrutiny. These datasets typically contain missing values, complex categorical variables, and imbalanced class distributions, all of which complicate downstream model development and interpretation. OBJECTIVE: This study introduces a structured preprocessing framework designed to address common challenges in medical tabular data and to assess how preprocessing choices affect the stability and p

Cross-cancer survival prediction using machine learning models.

Among the many challenges faced by healthcare systems, cancer remains one of the most urgent. This makes the application of artificial intelligence a critical tool for enhancing early detection and optimizing treatment strategies, especially given the growing volume of patient data being collected. In this study, machine learning models trained on data for a specific type of cancer were employed to predict three-year survival after diagnosis for other cancer types. Two groups were considered: the most frequent cancers and those related to the digestive system. The data were extracted from the

Comparative evaluation of XGBoost, TabNet, and FT transformer models for fatal crash prediction under extreme class imbalance.

Fatal traffic crashes are a rare yet catastrophically consequential event in real-world crash data, typically constituting less than 1% of total records. This extreme class imbalance poses a fundamental challenge for machine learning-based severity prediction, as standard algorithms tend to ignore the minority class in favor of maximizing overall accuracy. This study investigates whether modern deep tabular learning architectures (TabNet, FT-Transformer) offer consistent advantages over the traditional gradient boosting method XGBoost in predicting fatal crashes under conditions of extreme cla

Enhancing prediction accuracy for Parkinson's disease using advanced machine learning models.

Globally, Parkinson's disease (PD), a neurological disorder, has a negative influence on the health of older adults. PD has no validated means of treatment, and thus, affects both social (i.e., mental) and physical health among individuals who experience PD. Therefore, it is essential to develop new methods for detecting PD to benefit the health of everyone involved. There is an opportunity to improve PD detection and accuracy by leveraging structured data sources and employing machine learning (ML). Ultimately, the goal of this research work is to provide an overall descriptive ML approach to

Geologically-inspired and mutation-aware driven well log density reconstruction method for complex heterogeneous formations.

To address the issue of data distortion in traditional well log density reconstruction methods caused by harsh borehole environments in complex heterogeneous formations, and the challenge for general machine learning models to capture high-frequency abrupt change features due to the lack of geophysical constraints, this paper proposes a density curve reconstruction framework integrating geologically-inspired feature engineering and a mutation-aware mechanism. The method first constructs a multi-dimensional enhanced feature space covering sedimentary cycle characteristics and fluid properties t
