Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) present with complex behavioral symptoms that can arise in the absence of overt structural brain damage. Recent evidence suggests that border-associated macrophages (BAMs) located at the brain's interfaces regulate central nervous system function, yet the specific roles of distinct BAM subsets remain largely undefined. By reanalyzing single-nucleus RNA sequencing data from postmortem PD brains, we identified a BAM subset expressing CD169 that was significantly reduced in patients compared with controls. To examine their function, we employe

Border-associated macrophages (BAMs) constitute a highly heterogeneous group of central nervous system-resident macrophages at the brain boundaries. Despite their significance, BAMs have mainly been overlooked compared to microglia, resulting in a limited understanding of their functions. However, recent advancements in single-cell immunophenotyping and transcriptomic analyses of BAMs have revealed a previously unrecognized complexity in these cells, in addition to their critical roles under non-pathological conditions and diseases like Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease, glioma, an

BACKGROUND AND AIM: It has been reported that the endocardium in Fabry disease has a binary appearance on transthoracic echocardiography. It has been suggested that this sign could be used with good accuracy to differentiate Fabry disease from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and even as a first filter to screen for suspected Fabry disease.
METHODS: Therefore, we performed a blinded echocardiography in a non-selected population of patients with Fabry disease and matched controls. We included 23 echocardiographic studies of Fabry patients.
RESULTS: Two of the Fabry patients had binary appearance o

With the discovery of functional lymphatic vessels and numerous immune cells in the dura mater, people have gradually realized that the dura mater is not only a biophysical barrier, but also seems to have become a newly emerging immune center that plays an important role in immune defense, immune surveillance, and immune homeostasis. This article will introduce in detail the composition and source of dural immune cells; as well as the changes in the dural immune landscape under various central nervous system (CNS) diseases (such as aging and neurodegeneration, autoimmune diseases, tumor, infec

1. Biochemical estimates of lactase, sucrase and maltase activities, carried out on intestinal biopsies appearing histologically normal, were compared with those obtained from children suffering from coeliac disease, cow's milk protein intolerance/postenteritis syndrome and the intractable diarrhoea syndrome of infancy. Lactase deficiency in these children was found to be more pronounced than sucrase or maltase deficiencies. 2. Quantitative cytochemical investigations showed characteristic disease-induced changes in the ability of enterocytes to express alpha- and beta-glucosidases, but not al

Maintaining genetic diversity in dog breeds is an important consideration for the management of inherited diseases. We evaluated genetic diversity in Border Collies using molecular and genealogical methods, and examined changes to genetic diversity when carriers for Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome (TNS) and Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL) are removed from the genotyped population. Genotype data for 255 Border Collies and a pedigree database of 83,996 Border Collies were used for analysis. Molecular estimates revealed a mean multi-locus heterozygosity (MLH) of 0.311 (SD 0.027), 20.79% of the g

A 28-week-old sheep was presented at the animal hospital because of chronic emaciation, anemia and slight diarrhea. Due to poor general condition and bad prognosis the animal was euthanized and submitted for postmortem investigation. Multiple erosions and ulcerations were found in the dorsal region of the tongue, the pharynx, the hard palate, in the esophagus and the ruminal pillars. Histologically, these lesions consisted of necrosuppurative inflammation. The animal was tested positive for pestivirus antigen both by immunohistochemical and by virological examination (cell culture, antigen cap

Porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC) is the name used to describe a clinical presentation characterized by respiratory signs and poor growth in growing-finishing pigs. Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is one of the pathogens potentially involved in the presentation of this complex, although, it has been mainly linked to PCV2-systemic disease (PCV2-SD). However, some reports have suggested that PCV2 can cause respiratory lesions in the absence of systemic lymphoid damage; this apparently different condition has been referred as PCV2-lung disease (PCV2-LD). The present study analysed retro

Mammalian brain border-associated macrophages (BAMs) are strategically positioned to support vital properties and processes: for example, the composition of the brain's perivascular extracellular matrix and cerebrospinal fluid flow via the glymphatic pathway. BAMs also effectively restrict the spread of infectious microbes into the brain. However, while fighting infections, BAMs sustain long-term transcriptomic changes and can be replaced by inflammatory monocytes, potentially leading to a gradual loss of their beneficial homeostatic functions. We hypothesize that by expediting the deteriorati

BACKGROUND: The Mekong Basin Disease Surveillance cooperation (MBDS) is one of several sub-regional disease surveillance networks that have emerged in recent years as an approach to transnational cooperation for infectious disease prevention and control. Since 2003 MBDS has pioneered a unique model for local cross-border cooperation. This study examines stakeholders' perspectives of these MBDS experiences, based on a survey of local managers and semi-structured interviews with MBDS leaders and the central coordinator.
RESULTS: Fifteen managers from 12 of 20 paired cross-border sites completed

Though it is accepted that emerging infectious diseases are a threat to planet biodiversity, little information exists about their role as drivers of species extinction. Populations are also affected by natural catastrophes and other pathogens, making it difficult to estimate the particular impact of emerging infectious diseases. Border disease virus genogroup 4 (BDV-4) caused a previously unreported decrease in populations of Pyrenean chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica pyrenaica) in Spain. Using a population viability analysis, we compared probabilities of extinction of a virtual chamois population

Infectious disease disasters are events that involve a biological agent, disease and that result in mass casualties, such as a bioterrorism attack, an emerging outbreak of infectious disease; all disasters pose a risk of infection transmission. But, infectious disease disasters pose the great-risk to illness or death from an infectious disease. This study raised the awareness and improved knowledge by educational program for Military Nursing Staff on selected infectious disease disasters acquired at Egyptian Eastern Border. The selected arthropod-borne diseases were Anthrax, Tick borne relapsi

In January 2011, cases of abortion, stillbirth and weak live kids were reported in two goat herds in northern Italy. Samples from 18 kids found dead, 12 fetuses, and two stillborn kids were analyzed for pestivirus antigen using an ELISA kit and a border disease virus (BDV)-specific RT-PCR. Positive results were obtained in six kids and one fetus. Phylogenetic analysis based on 225 bp of the 5'UTR fragment of the BDV genome from positive samples showed that the goats were infected with BDV genotype 3. Serum and blood samples collected from all animals in both herds were analyzed using competiti

We reviewed confirmed cases of pediatric invasive meningococcal disease in Tijuana, Mexico, and San Diego County, California, USA, during 2005-2008. The overall incidence and fatality rate observed in Tijuana were similar to those found in the US, and serogroup distribution suggests that most cases in Tijuana are vaccine preventable.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) demonstrate a complex interaction with the immune system, challenging the traditional view of the brain as an "immune-privileged" organ. Microglia were once considered the sole guardians of the brain's immune response. However, recent research has revealed the critical role of peripheral immune cells located in key brain regions like the meninges, choroid plexus, and perivascular spaces. These previously overlooked cells are now recognized as contributors to the development and progression of NDs. This newfound understanding opens doors for pioneering therapeut

The existence of specialised structures that allow a continuous exchange of CSF between different anatomical compartments at the brain-meningeal border is challenging conventional notions around molecular transport within the brain. Experimental findings highlight the conduits and cellular structures controlling the transport of CSF and immune cells between the brain parenchyma (via the glymphatic system), the subarachnoid space (enclosed by the meningeal pia and arachnoid layers), and the outmost meningeal dural layer and calvaria (via the so-called arachnoid cuff exit points). Historically, the central nervous system (CNS) was regarded as 'immune-privileged', possessing its own distinct immune cell population. This immune privilege was thought to be established by a tight blood-brain barrier (BBB) and blood-cerebrospinal-fluid barrier (BCSFB), which prevented the crossing of peripheral immune cells and their secreted factors into the CNS parenchyma. However, recent studies have revealed the presence of peripheral immune cells in proximity to various brain-border niches such as the choroid plexus, cranial bone marrow (CBM), meninges, and perivascular spaces. HD is characterized by a small amount of tumour cells (the H- and RS-cells) in a background of many, probably reactive, lymphocytes and histiocytes. Lymphocyte predominant HD seems to be a distinct clinicopathological entity of germinal centre cell origin and has a relatively favourable prognosis. This type has to be differentiated from mixed cellularity and nodular sclerosis HD, which show a different marker profile of the H- and RS-cells and their variants. Differentiation of progressively transformed germinal centres from lymphocyte predominant HD may be problematical and is based on the de
