Invasive Bordetella pertussis Infection in Infants: A Case Report.

Infants are more likely to develop severe pertussis. We report a malignant pertussis case in a 2-month-old boy with respiratory failure, severe pneumonia, septic shock, and encephalopathy. Bordetella pertussis was detected from nasopharyngeal secretions by polymerase chain reaction, as well as both blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples via metagenomics next-generation sequencing.

Prevalence of Bordetella infection in a hospital setting in niamey, niger.

Bordetella pertussis still poses an important health threat in developing countries. In Niger, notified pertussis cases are few despite the low diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis/pentavalent vaccine coverage. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of B. pertussis in children aged <5 years consulting at a pediatric ward. A 5-month study in 2011 recruited 342 children with respiratory symptoms at the National Hospital of Niamey. Nasopharyngeal aspirates were tested by culture and real-time polymerase chain reaction. Overall, 34 (11.2%) of the 305 available nasopharyngeal aspirates tested by real-time pol

Bordetella petrii infection with long-lasting persistence in human.

We report the repeated isolation of Bordetella petrii in the sputum of a 79-year-old female patient with diffuse bronchiectasis and persistence of the bacterium for >1 year. The patient was first hospitalized due to dyspnea, which developed into severe cough with purulent sputum that yielded B. petrii on culture. After this first episode, the patient was hospitalized an additional 4 times with bronchorrhea symptoms. The isolates collected were analyzed by using biochemical, genotypic, and proteomic tools. Expression of specific proteins was analyzed by using serum samples from the patient. The

Pathology and pathogenesis of fatal Bordetella pertussis infection in infants.

BACKGROUND: Each year, Bordetella pertussis infection causes an estimated 294,000 deaths worldwide, primarily among young, nonvaccinated children. Approximately 90% of all deaths due to pertussis in the Unites States occur in young infants. These children often develop intractable pulmonary hypertension; however, the pathophysiologic mechanism responsible for this complication has not been well characterized, and there have been no detailed descriptions of the pathology of this disease since the 1940s. METHODS: Respiratory tissue samples obtained at autopsy from 15 infants aged <or=4 months w

Prevalence and risk factors for feline Bordetella bronchiseptica infection.

A cross-sectional survey of a convenience-sample of 740 cats was undertaken to obtain an estimate of the prevalence of Bordetella bronchiseptica infection, and to identify risk factors that might predispose them to the infection. Data on individual cats and household variables, including disease status and animal contacts were obtained by questionnaire. B bronchiseptica was isolated from 82 (11 per cent) of the cats sampled. The prevalence of B bronchiseptica varied with the type of household sampled, being 19.5 per cent in rescue catteries, 9 per cent in breeding catteries, 13.5 per cent in r

A new animal model of Bordetella pertussis infection and immunity.

Bordetella pertussis is a strictly human pathogen. Experimental infection of other animals can occur with large inoculating doses; rat, mice and primate models have been used to study pathogenesis and immunity. Recently, it was shown that newborn piglets are susceptible to B. pertussis. Lung pathophysiology of infected piglets was similar to that of human infants that develop bronchopneumonia. Piglets and infants are anatomically similar and maternal antibodies are transferred and secreted by a similar mechanism. This model could be valuable for studying the roles of passively and actively acq

Bordetella pertussis infection in northern Taiwan, 1997-2001.

The clinical presentations of laboratory-confirmed Bordetella pertussis infection in Chang Gung Children's Hospital during 1997 and 2001 were analyzed. Of the 46 cases, 25 (54.3%) were male. The patients ages ranged from 24 days to 37 years, with a mean and median of 4.3 years and 10.5 years, respectively. Forty four patients had vaccination records, among them 23 patients (52.2%) had received > or = 3 doses of pertussis vaccine. Of the patients who were partially vaccinated (received 1 or 2 doses vaccine) or unvaccinated, 16 (69.6%) presented with whooping cough, 5 (22.2%) with post-tussive v

Bordetella bronchiseptica infection in pediatric lung transplant recipients.

Bordetella bronchiseptica are small, pleomorphic Gram-negative coccobacilli which are commensal organisms in the upper respiratory tract of many wild and domestic animals ('kennel cough' in dogs). While it is common for health care providers to ask about exposure to ill family/friends, most do not routinely inquire about the health or immunization status of household pets. We report two cases of B. bronchiseptica pneumonia in lung transplant recipients [cystic fibrosis (CF); ages 10 and 15 yr; one male] who contracted B. bronchiseptica from pet dogs. We compared their course and outcome to fou

The role of Bordetella infections in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis.

BACKGROUND: Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB) are associated with a variety of viral and bacterial infectious agents, some of which are potentially preventable by immunization. Bordetella pertussis, which causes whooping cough, has not been studied in this context. We aimed to assess the role of Bordetella infections in patients with AECB. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with AECB, who presented to participating private practices in Basel, Switzerland, between October 2000 and June 2002, were evaluated by a standardized questionnaire, nasopharyngeal swabs for culture (Bordetella

Molecular and serological incidences of Bordetella bronchiseptica in pet dogs with urinary infections.

BACKGROUND: Bordetella bronchiseptica is an important bacterial pathogen that is linked primarily to canine infectious respiratory disease complex and rarely to other health issues, including urinary tract infections. AIMS: This study aimed to molecularly identify B. bronchiseptica in the urine of diseased dogs with urinary infections and to document local isolates in NCBI. The serological prevalence of anti-B. bronchiseptica antibodies in the sera of the study dogs were also assessed. METHODS: A total of 129 pet dogs with urinary tract infections were attended to private clinics in Baghdad

Co-infections with Bordetella bronchiseptica in canine: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bordetella bronchiseptica is a primary pathogen in canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD), or kennel cough, capable of independently causing respiratory illness and contributing significantly to co-infections with other viral and bacterial agents. Despite its critical role in disease transmission and persistence, the epidemiology of B. bronchiseptica in CIRD remains poorly understood. Limited data on co-infection prevalence and associated risk factors hinder effective management and control of this pathogen. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to clarif

Modeling the catarrhal stage of Bordetella pertussis upper respiratory tract infections in mice.

Pertussis (whooping cough) is a highly transmissible human respiratory disease caused by Bordetella pertussis, a human-restricted pathogen. Animal models generally involve pneumonic infections induced by depositing large numbers of bacteria in the lungs of mice. These models have informed us about the molecular pathogenesis of pertussis and guided development of vaccines that successfully protect against severe disease. However, they bypass the catarrhal stage of the disease, when bacteria first colonize and initially grow in the upper respiratory tract. This is a critical and highly transmiss

Prevalence of asymptomatic Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis infections among school children in China as determined by pooled real-time PCR: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Studies have documented that older children and adolescents act as a reservoir of Bordetella pertussis infection for young infants who have not yet completed their primary immunization schedule. Asymptomatic pertussis infection has been reported during outbreaks. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate whether B. pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis can colonize the nasopharynx of healthy school children, using culture and pooled real-time PCR with targets for insertion sequences IS481 and IS1001. METHODS: Nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs were taken from 629 asymptomatic school

Nasopharyngeal microbiota in hospitalized children with Bordetella pertussis and Rhinovirus infection.

Despite great advances in describing Bordetella pertussis infection, the role of the host microbiota in pertussis pathogenesis remains unexplored. Indeed, the microbiota plays important role in defending against bacterial and viral respiratory infections. We investigated the nasopharyngeal microbiota in infants infected by B. pertussis (Bp), Rhinovirus (Rv) and simultaneously by both infectious agents (Bp + Rv). We demonstrated a specific nasopharyngeal microbiome profiles for Bp group, compared to Rv and Bp + Rv groups, and a reduction of microbial richness during coinfection compared to the

Pharmacotherapy for Bordetella pertussis infection. II. A synthesis of clinical sciences.

Despite the plethora of studies that have examined laboratory susceptibility testing for Bordetella pertussis, assessments of treatment have lagged far behind both in quality and quantity. Macrolides and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole historically served the needs of both treatment and prevention, albeit there is still controversy about the degree of protection measured both bacteriologically and clinically. As high-level macrolide resistance has emerged in some geographic regions and since macrolides have been the mainstay of therapy, alternative antibiotics need to be defined for pertussis. I

Bordetella trematum infection: case report and review of previous cases.

BACKGROUND: Bordetella trematum is an infrequent Gram-negative coccobacillus, with a reservoir, pathogenesis, a life cycle and a virulence level which has been poorly elucidated and understood. Related information is scarce due to the low frequency of isolates, so it is important to add data to the literature about this microorganism. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 74-year-old female, who was referred to the hospital, presenting with ulcer and necrosis in both legs. Therapy with piperacillin-tazobactam was started and peripheral artery revascularization was performed. During the sur
