Surgical amputation of a limb 31,000 years ago in Borneo.

The prevailing view regarding the evolution of medicine is that the emergence of settled agricultural societies around 10,000 years ago (the Neolithic Revolution) gave rise to a host of health problems that had previously been unknown among non-sedentary foraging populations, stimulating the first major innovations in prehistoric medical practices1,2. Such changes included the development of more advanced surgical procedures, with the oldest known indication of an 'operation' formerly thought to have consisted of the skeletal remains of a European Neolithic farmer (found in Buthiers-Boulancour

Swedish traveller with Plasmodium knowlesi malaria after visiting Malaysian Borneo.

Plasmodium knowlesi is typically found in nature in macaques and has recently been recognized as the fifth species of Plasmodium causing malaria in human populations in south-east Asia. A case of knowlesi malaria is described in a Swedish man, who became ill after returning from a short visit to Malaysian Borneo in October 2006. His P. knowlesi infection was not detected using a rapid diagnostic test for malaria, but was confirmed by PCR and molecular characterization. He responded rapidly to treatment with mefloquine. Evaluation of rapid diagnostic kits with further samples from knowlesi mala

A new species of Languidipes Hubbard (Ephemeroptera, Polymitarcyidae) from Borneo.

Pericarditis is the most frequent pericardial syndrome and a common cause of chest pain in emergency and cardiology practice. Over the past 2 decades, its management has moved from largely empirical anti‑inflammatory treatment toward a mechanism‑based, risk‑stratified, and imaging‑supported approach. Diagnosis remains clinical, based on the presence of typical chest pain, pericardial rub, electrocardiographic changes, and pericardial effusion; yet, inflammatory biomarkers and multimodality imaging, especially cardiac magnetic resonance, increasingly support diagnostic confidence, differential

Nineteen Years of Japanese Encephalitis Surveillance in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is endemic in Malaysia. Although JE vaccination is practiced in the neighboring state of Sarawak for a long time, little is known about JE in Sabah state in Borneo. As a result, informed policy formulation for JE in Sabah has not been accomplished. In the present study, we have analyzed JE cases that have been reported to the Sabah State Health Department from 2000 to 2018. A total of 92 JE cases were reported during 19 years, and three-fourths of the cases were attributed to children. The estimated mean incidence for JE cases is 0.161/100,000 population. Japanese en

Ethnobotanical study of medicinal plants used by the Kenyah community of Borneo.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Sarawak is located in one of the world's most biodiverse regions and is home to more than 40 sub-ethnic groups that each have their own distinct culture, language and lifestyle. This has given rise to numerous, unique ethnobotanical systems. However, due to rapid urbanization, this traditional knowledge is at a risk of extinction. Yet, ethnobotanical studies in Sarawak are almost non-existent, especially among Orang Ulu communities like the Kenyah. AIM OF STUDY: Therefore, this study was conducted to document the ethnomedicinal knowledge of the Kenyah community

The epidemiology of chronic myeloid leukaemia in southern Sarawak, Borneo Island.

OBJECTIVES: There are very few published chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) epidemiology studies in South-East Asia and no representative from Malaysia. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of adult CML patients (citizen) in a single but representative centre in southern Sarawak. RESULTS: Total 79 patients (Malay 39%, Chinese 30.4%, Iban 17.7%, Bidayuh 12.7%) were identified from the databases. Median age at diagnosis was younger, 40, compared to developed countries due to population structure. M:F ratio was higher, 2.6:1 compared to other countries 1.3-1.7:1. Majority presented at chronic

Naturally Acquired Human Plasmodium cynomolgi and P. knowlesi Infections, Malaysian Borneo.

To monitor the incidence of Plasmodium knowlesi infections and determine whether other simian malaria parasites are being transmitted to humans, we examined 1,047 blood samples from patients with malaria at Kapit Hospital in Kapit, Malaysia, during June 24, 2013-December 31, 2017. Using nested PCR assays, we found 845 (80.6%) patients had either P. knowlesi monoinfection (n = 815) or co-infection with other Plasmodium species (n = 30). We noted the annual number of these zoonotic infections increased greatly in 2017 (n = 284). We identified 6 patients, 17-65 years of age, with P. cynomolgi and

Case report: two human Streptococcus suis infections in Borneo, Sabah, Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus Suis (S.suis) is increasingly being recognised as a potentially preventable emerging zoonotic infection in humans with a global distribution. It is a major cause of meningitis especially among those in contact with pigs and has also been associated with a toxic shock syndrome. CASE PRESENTATIONS: We report the first two human cases from Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia which expands the global reach of this important pathogen. Here, we illustrate their epidemiological risk factors, clinical presentation and resulting sequelae of both patients. CONCLUSION: The continued publi

Exposure of Primate Reservoir Hosts to Mosquito Vectors in Malaysian Borneo.

Several vector-borne pathogens of primates have potential for human spillover. An example is the simian malaria Plasmodium knowlesi which is now a major public health problem in Malaysia. Characterization of exposure to mosquito vectors is essential for assessment of the force of infection within wild simian populations, however few methods exist to do so. Here we demonstrate the use of thermal imaging and mosquito magnet independence traps (MMIT) to assess the abundance, diversity and infection rates in mosquitoes host seeking near long-tailed macaque (Macaca fasicularis) sleeping sites in th

Breast Cancer Screening in Sarawak, Borneo: 10 Years' Community Outreach Program.

BACKGROUND: Sarawak isthe largest state in Malaysia, with a population of 2.9 millionwith 45% living more than 100 km from urban cities. These communities face the risk of delayed breast cancer diagnosis due to limited access to healthcare services. Sarawak has only four government hospitals with diagnostic mammogram facilities. OBJECTIVE: Sarawak Breast Cancer Support Group (SBCSG) has spearheaded breast cancer education and early screening outreach since 2012, with a special focus on rural communities. This paper describes the results from our 10-year program. METHODS: These programs were

New genus and new species of Pentatomidae from Borneo (Hemiptera: Heteroptera).

A new genus, Graziasternum gen. nov., with two new species, Graziasternum graziae sp. nov. and Graziasternum joceliae sp. nov. are described. According to external thoracic and genital structures, this new genus is considered to be the closest extant relative known to the genus Placosternum Amyot Serville. Discussion of its possible phylogenetic position based on structure comparison, with the discussion on the importance of the characteristics of the thoracic sterna, the genital structures with other genera or groups of genera that share similar structures is given. Additionally, the two new

Efficient Surveillance of Plasmodium knowlesi Genetic Subpopulations, Malaysian Borneo, 2000-2018.

Population genetic analysis revealed that Plasmodium knowlesi infections in Malaysian Borneo are caused by 2 divergent parasites associated with long-tailed (cluster 1) and pig-tailed (cluster 2) macaques. Because the transmission ecology is likely to differ for each macaque species, we developed a simple genotyping PCR to efficiently distinguish between and survey the 2 parasite subpopulations. This assay confirmed differences in the relative proportions in areas of Kapit division of Sarawak state, consistent with multilocus microsatellite analyses. Analyses of 1,204 human infections at Kapit

Seasonal variation and mobility of trace metals in the beach sediments of NW Borneo.

Miri city has a dynamic coastal environment, mainly influenced by intensive sedimentation from the Baram River and excessive trace metal loading by the Miri River, which are significant environmental concerns. As the mobility, bioavailability, and toxicity of the trace metals in the sediments are largely controlled by their particulate speciation, the modified BCR sequential extraction protocol was applied to determine the particulate speciation of trace metals in the coastal sediments of Miri, to unravel the seasonal geochemical processes responsible for known observations, and to identify po

Epidemiological Characteristics of Strongyloidiasis in Inhabitants of Indigenous Communities in Borneo Island, Malaysia.

Epidemiological study on strongyloidiasis in humans is currently lacking in Malaysia. Thus, a cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection among the inhabitants of longhouse indigenous communities in Sarawak. A single stool and blood sample were collected from each participant and subjected to microscopy, serological and molecular techniques. Five species of intestinal parasites were identified by stool microscopy. None of the stool samples were positive for S. stercoralis. However, 11% of 236 serum samples were seropositive for stron

Ectoparasite infestation patterns of domestic dogs in suburban and rural areas in Borneo.

Domestic dogs, Canis lupus, have been one of the longest companions of humans and have introduced their own menagerie of parasites and pathogens into this relationship. Here, we investigate the parasitic load of 212 domestic dogs with fleas (Siphonaptera) chewing lice (Phthiraptera), and ticks (Acarina) along a gradient from rural areas with near-natural forest cover to suburban areas in Northern Borneo (Sabah, Malaysia). We used a spatially-explicit hierarchical Bayesian model that allowed us to impute missing data and to consider spatial structure in modelling dog infestation probability and
