Comparison of subjective sleep and fatigue in breast- and bottle-feeding mothers.

OBJECTIVES: Artificial milk supplementation remains a popular practice in spite of the well documented and indisputable advantages of breast feeding for both mother and child. However, the association between maternal sleep, fatigue and feeding method is understudied and remains unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate whether perceived sleep and fatigue differ between breast- and bottle feeding post partum women. In addition, the relationship between subjective sleep characteristics and fatigue is examined. METHODS: Post partum women (four to 16 weeks) filled out a socio-demographic

Infant feeding bottle design, growth and behaviour: results from a randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Whether the design of an anti-vacuum infant feeding bottle influences infant milk intake, growth or behavior is unknown, and was the subject of this randomized trial. SUBJECTS: 63 (36 male) healthy, exclusively formula-fed term infants. INTERVENTION: Randomisation to use Bottle A (n = 31), one-way air valve: Philips Avent) versus Bottle B (n = 32), internal venting system: Dr Browns). 74 breast-fed reference infants were recruited, with randomisation (n = 24) to bottle A (n = 11) or B (n = 13) if bottle-feeding was subsequently introduced. Randomisation: stratified by gender and

Avoidance of bottles during the establishment of breast feeds in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants start milk feeds by gavage tube. As they mature, sucking feeds are gradually introduced. Women who choose to breast feed their preterm infant are not always able to be in hospital with their baby and need an alternative approach to feeding. Most commonly, milk (expressed breast milk or formula) is given by bottle. Whether using bottles during establishment of breast feeds is detrimental to breast feeding success is a topic of ongoing debate. OBJECTIVES: To identify the effects of avoidance of bottle feeds during establishment of breast feeding on the likelihood of

[Breast- and bottle-feeding in preterm infants: a comparison of behavioral cues].

BACKGROUND: Developmental care has been broadly applied to identify the behavioral cues and care needs of preterm infants. Past studies indicate a significantly higher level of physical distress in bottle-fed preterm infants than in preterm infants who are breastfed. However, no evidence has yet been reported that supports the influence of feeding methods on behavioral cues. PURPOSE: This study compares differences in the type and frequency of behavioral cues between breast- and bottle-fed preterm infants. METHODS: A comparison study design and secondary data analysis method were used to ass

Nipple properties affect sensorimotor integration during bottle feeding in an infant pig model.

Infant feeding is a critical neurological milestone in development defined by the coordination of muscles, peripheral nerves, and brainstem nuclei. In infants, milk flow rate is often limited to improve feeding performance without treating the underlying deficiencies in the sucking and swallowing processes. Modification of the neuromotor response via sensory information from the nipple during bottle feeding is an unexplored avenue for physiology-based interventions. In this study, we assessed how differences in nipple hole size and nipple stiffness affect sucking muscle activation and subseque

Breast feeding, bottle feeding and dental caries in Kuwait, a country with low-fluoride levels in the water supply.

A study was carried out in Kuwait, a country with low levels of fluoride in the water supplies, to determine the prevalence and extent of caries in early childhood, and enquire into associated factors. Mothers of pre-schoolchildren were interviewed, and their children aged 18 to 48 months received a dental examination. Of the 227 children examined, 107 (47 per cent) were caries free, and 41 (18%) had five or more dmf teeth. 'Nursing caries', affecting at least two maxillary incisors, was seen in 19 per cent of the sample. Breast fed children were significantly more likely to be caries free tha

Feeding an infant with high arched palate by high flow rate bottle nipple.

For infants with high arched palate, feeding is one of the most immediate challenges faced by parents and caretakers. General suggestions for feeding in infants with cleft palate may be adapted to infants with high arched palate. These include oral feeding facilitation techniques and special feeding tools. Here we present a newborn with a high arched palate and serious feeding problems who was fed easily by a large size and a large hole nipple, ordinarily used for infants older than 6 months, instead of specialized feeding equipment.

Effect of unrestricted bottle-feeding on early postoperative course after cleft palate repair.

Although bottle-feeding after cheiloplasty is widely accepted, postoperative feeding regimen after palatoplasty is still controversial. The aim of this prospective randomized study was to evaluate the effect of bottle-feeding on early postoperative course after palatoplasty in a relatively homogeneous group of patients. Eighty-two consecutive patients with nonsyndromic cleft palate undergoing 2-flap palatoplasty by a single surgeon were randomized to feeding from a bottle with the usual nipple (G1, N = 42) or to feeding with a spoon, cup, or syringe (G2, N = 40). Complication rates, postoperat

Consequences of bottle-feeding to the oral facial development of initially breastfed children.

OBJECTIVE: To identify and assess the possible consequences of bottle-feeding on the oral facial development of children who were breastfed up to at least six months of age. METHOD: Two hundred and two children (4 years of age) enrolled in an early health attention program participated in the study. The sample was divided into two groups: G1 (children who used only a cup to drink) and G2 (those who used a bottle). RESULTS: Lip closure was observed in 82% of the children in G1 and in 65% of those in G2 (p = 0.0065). The tongue coming to rest in the maxillary arch was found in 73% of the child

Analysis of the Influence of Breastfeeding and Bottle-Feeding upon the Origin of Posterior Crossbites.

(1) Introduction. An analysis was made of posterior crossbites in deciduous dentition and their relation to the type of feeding received by the child, with the objective of determining the influence of the way in which the child is fed in the early stages of life on the development of posterior crossbites. (2) Material and methods. A total of 1401 preschool children between 3 and 6 years of age from Seville (Spain) were included in the study. An intraoral exploration was carried out to assess the presence of crossbites (uni- or bilateral, and functional or not). The study was completed with a

Effects of breast-feeding duration, bottle-feeding duration and non-nutritive sucking habits on the occlusal characteristics of primary dentition.

BACKGROUND: Early transition from breastfeeding and non-nutritive sucking habits may be related to occlusofacial abnormalities as environmental factors. Previous studies have not taken into account the potential for interactions between feeding practice, non-nutritive sucking habits and occlusal traits. This study assessed the effects of breast-feeding duration, bottle-feeding duration and non-nutritive sucking habits on the occlusal characteristics of primary dentition in 3-6-year-old children in Peking city. METHODS: This cross sectional study was conducted via an examination of the occlusa

The Association Between Exclusive Breastfeeding, Bottle-Feeding, and Oral Rothia on Early Childhood Caries.

Purpose: To investigate associations between feeding practices and the prevalence of oral Rothia, at the species and genus level, with early childhood caries (ECC). Methods: A total of 438 children were included in this cross-sectional study. A questionnaire was completed by the parent of each participant. Based on the feeding history, participants were classified as exclusively breastfed, exclusively bottle-fed, or mixed (both feeding). Supragingival plaque samples were collected, and 16S rRNA sequencing was used to assess Rothia genus and species' relative abundances. The association between

Does the position of a bottle during infant feeding influence the jaw's postural position?

Early correction of anterior crossbite in the primary dentition can encourage proper growth and development of the maxilla and mandible, reducing the need for future orthodontic therapy. Correction is typically initiated after the age of 3 when a fixed or removable appliance can be fabricated and worn. This case study describes an instance of exceptionally early intervention without the use of an appliance. A bottle-fed 10-month-old boy presented with anterior crossbite, and a contributing factor may have been the position of the bottle's nipple during feeding. Correction of the anterior cross

Deglutition apnoea as indicator of maturation of suckle feeding in bottle-fed preterm infants.

The maturation of deglutition apnoea time was investigated in 42 bottle-fed preterm infants, 28 to 37 weeks gestation, and in 29 normal term infants as a comparison group. Deglutition apnoea times reduced as infants matured, as did the number and length of episodes of multiple-swallow deglutition apnoea. The maturation appears related to developmental age (gestation) rather than feeding experience (postnatal age). Prolonged (> 4 seconds) episodes of deglutition apnoea remained significantly more frequent in preterm infants reaching term postconceptual age compared to term infants. However, mul

Comparison of wound dehiscence and parent's satisfaction between spoon/syringe feeding and breast/bottle feeding in patients with cleft lip repair.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and cleft palate are the most common craniofacial anomalies affecting approximately 2.49 of every 1,000 children born in North-east of Thailand. Srinagarind Hospital has 100-150 cases of cleft lip each year. Children with cleft lip and palate need surgical procedures as soon as possible. After lip repair the normal recommendation is not using bottle or breast feeding for 2 weeks to avoid tension at the sutured area during sucking and possible cause of wound dehiscence. So this is quite complicated for the parents, and patients feel frustrated, cry, and move their head aro
