Corporate boxing matches for charity: a personal point of view.

Boxing and other combat sports receive constant exposure and support in the media. Corporate boxing matches are a popular method of raising money for charity. However, charity fights are more dangerous for the contestants than other sanctioned bouts. In a world where head trauma and concussion in sports is under constant scrutiny, the ethics of raising funds by deliberate concussive forces to the head needs to be reassessed.

Injury surveillance during elite women's national boxing championship in India.

BACKGROUND: Injury surveillance is the cornerstone of any prevention program. However the same pertaining to women's boxing is meager. We hence intended to analyse the incidence, pattern and characteristics of injuries in female boxers during the 4th Elite Women's National Boxing Championship, 2019, in India. METHODS: A total of 235 female Indian boxers participated in the tournament. Injuries from the competition injury database maintained in accordance with the injury code proposed by the Australian Sports Injury Data Dictionary were compiled to observe the pattern and analysed. The outcome

Hand and Wrist Injuries in Boxing and the Martial Arts.

Hand and wrist injuries in martial arts are typically a reflection of the combat nature of this discipline. In striking sports, the axial load mechanism of injury is common and causes fractures and dislocations; in grappling sports, sprain injuries and degenerative changes predominate. There is clear evidence to support that hand protection reduces the risk of hand injury. Traditional training in martial arts on proper technique and target selection in striking sports reduces the risk of hand injury, and is an important component of hand and wrist injury prevention.

Boxing-acute complications and late sequelae: from concussion to dementia.

BACKGROUND: Boxing has received increased public attention and acceptance in recent years. However, this development has not been accompanied by a critical discussion of the early and late health complications. METHODS: We selectively review recent studies on the acute, subacute, and chronic neuropsychiatric consequences of boxing. RESULTS: Cerebral concussions ("knock-outs") are the most relevant acute consequence of boxing. The number of reported cases of death in the ring seems to have mildly decreased. Subacute neuropsychological deficits appear to last longer than subjective symptoms. T

Boxing as a sport activity associated with isolated GH deficiency.

Drugs developed for the treatment of conditions other than neoplasia can also show promise as potential antitumor agents. The fluoroquinolone antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CPFX) is known to modulate cycle cell progression and apoptosis in cancer cells, and is thought to induce DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) via topoisomerase II (topo II) inhibition and stabilized cleavage complex (SCC) formation. DSBs trigger Ser-139 phosphorylation of histone H2AX (gammaH2AX) by PI-3-like kinases including ATM; gammaH2AX can serve as a marker of DNA damage when measured in situ using immunocytochemistry and flow

Epidemiology of boxing-related upper extremity injuries in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of boxing-related upper-extremity (UE) injuries in the United States has not been well characterized. Recent rule changes have been made to make participation safer for athletes, although the consequences of such rule changes on injury rates is unclear. Therefore, we sought to determine the incidence, characteristics, and trends of boxing-related UE injuries. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was queried for the years 2012-2016. All UE injuries related to boxing from 2012 to 2016 that occurred during organized boxing participation wer

Concussion in professional football: comparison with boxing head impacts--part 10.

OBJECTIVE: This study addresses impact biomechanics from boxing punches causing translational and rotational head acceleration. Olympic boxers threw four different punches at an instrumented Hybrid III dummy and responses were compared with laboratory-reconstructed NFL concussions. METHODS: Eleven Olympic boxers weighing 51 to 130 kg (112-285 lb) delivered 78 blows to the head of the Hybrid III dummy, including hooks, uppercuts and straight punches to the forehead and jaw. Instrumentation included translational and rotational head acceleration and neck loads in the dummy. Biaxial acceleration

Accuracy of Instrumented Mouthguards During Direct Jaw Impacts Seen in Boxing.

PURPOSE: Measuring head kinematics data is important to understand and develop methods and standards to mitigate head injuries in contact sports. Instrumented mouthguards (iMGs) have been developed to address coupling issues with previous sensors. Although validated with anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs), there is limited post-mortem human subjects (PMHS) data which provides more accurate soft tissue responses. This study evaluated two iMGs (Prevent Biometrics (PRE) and Diversified Technical Systems (DTS) in response to direct jaw impacts. METHODS: Three unembalmed male cadaver heads were p

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Investigating Head Trauma in Boxing.

OBJECTIVES: Although physical trauma has been reported in boxing since its inception, boxing still appeals to athletes and spectators. This systematic review and meta-analysis assess both acute and chronic neurological and neuropsychological effects that boxing has on the brain. Further assessments in terms of comparisons of the concussion ratio in boxing to other combat sports, as well as the efficiency of wearing headguards, are also performed. DATA SOURCES: This systematic review and meta-analysis used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The o

Jejunal perforation secondary to kick during kick-boxing practice: laparoscopic management.

Small bowel injury in a sports setting is a rare occurrence with a paucity of reported cases. A 30-year old male patient consulted for generalized abdominal pain subsequent to secondary blunt abdominal trauma during kick-boxing practice. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen and pelvis revealed a moderate amount of free fluid in both the parietocolic space and the rectovesical pouch, with perihepatic pneumoperitoneum. Emergency laparoscopy was indicated and a closure of small bowel defect was performed. Diagnosis of small bowel injuries is difficult, resulting in delayed treatment and incr

Long-term effects of asymmetrical posture in boxing assessed by baropodometry.

BACKGROUND: Asymmetrical posture maintained over long training periods may affect phenotypic plasticity, resulting functional to sporting goal but negative to the locomotor system. Aim of this study was to quantitatively evaluate these long-term effects in competitive boxers. METHODS: Baropodometric analysis was used to assess 20 competitive boxers and 20 non-sportsmen in upright bipedal posture for 5 s and for 51.2 s with open (OE) and closed (CE) eyes. RESULTS: The boxers' group (BOX) showed a larger total foot load (TFL) (p=0.022) on the right foot and a larger rearfoot load (RfL) (P=0.01

Exposure to sub-concussive head injury in boxing and other sports.

BACKGROUND: Current characterizations of chronic traumatic brain injury (CTBI) in boxing, football and other sports are reviewed in the context of the history of research on sub-concussive brain trauma in athletes. METHODS: The utility of exposure models for understanding CTBI in boxers is examined and concerns regarding the paucity of findings supportive of an exposure model for CTBI in football players are discussed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Recommendations for development of exposure models for sport-specific phenotypic characterizations of CTBI are presented.

The problem of anti-doping control of luteinizing hormone in boxing.

Luteinizing hormone (LH) is physiologically produced by the anterior pituitary gland. Male athletes may use pharmaceutical LH for doping since it increases the production of testosterone by testes. This hormone is thus on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) list of substances prohibited for males. Anti-doping laboratories perform the assay of this hormone in urine and report abnormally elevated results. We observed a highly significant prevalence of abnormal results in samples taken after a boxing match. Comparison of the descriptive statistics for 426 LH values observed in boxing and other sp

Disabling hand injuries in boxing: boxer's knuckle and traumatic carpal boss.

This article describes the treatment of the two most debilitating hand-related boxing injuries: boxer's knuckle and traumatic carpal boss. Recognition of the normal anatomy as well as the predictable pathology facilitates an accurate diagnosis and precision surgery. For boxer's knuckle, direct repair of the disrupted extensor hood, without the need for tendon augmentation, has been consistently employed; for traumatic carpal boss, arthrodesis of the destabilized carpometacarpal joints has been the preferred method of treatment. Precisely executed operative treatment of both injuries has result
