Brachial plexus neuropathy associated with scrub typhus: report of a case.

We report on a 20-year-old man who had scrub typhus with the unusual neurologic complication of brachial plexus neuropathy. The clinical features of fever, headache, pneumonitis, eschar, high Weil-Felix OX-K agglutination and Rickettsia tsutsugamushi immunofluorescence titers confirmed the diagnosis of scrub typhus. Brachial plexus neuropathy was proven by an electrophysiologic examination. He had a nearly complete recovery after adequate medical treatment.

Radiation-induced brachial plexus neuropathy in breast cancer patients.

The incidence and latency period of radiation-induced brachial plexopathy (RBP) were assessed in 79 breast cancer patients by a neurological follow-up examination at least 60 months (range 67-130 months) after the primary treatment. All patients were treated primarily with simple mastectomy, axillary nodal sampling and radiotherapy (RT). Postoperatively, pre- and postmenopausal patients were randomly allocated chemotherapy or antiestrogen treatment. All patients were recurrence-free at time of examination. Clinically, 35% (25-47%) of the patients had RBP; 19% (11-29%) had definite RBP, i.e. we

[Brachial plexus neuropathy (stinger syndrome) occurring in a patient with shoulder laxity].

The stinger syndrome is a common neuropathy caused by traction or compression of the brachial plexus. In general, it is seen in young adults involved in sport activities and a major contact trauma is the rule. An 11-year-old boy with bilateral glenohumeral joint laxity had pain in the left shoulder, numbness and decreased strength in the left arm that developed after striking against a wall while running, with the left shoulder in extension and the neck in minimal lateral flexion to the contralateral side. Physical examination showed extreme anteroinferior passive translocation of the humeral

Entrapment neuropathy contributing to dysfunction after birth brachial plexus injuries.

Although surgical treatment of brachial plexus birth palsy has yielded encouraging results, persistent inability to abduct and elevate the shoulder is common even in children with excellent return of arm and hand function. The reason for deltoid weakness in the afflicted children is not completely understood and may be multifactorial. Clinical observations, including a pattern of position-dependent weakness, suggest that primary nerve damage may not be the sole cause. The authors performed a retrospective chart study to investigate the outcome of surgical treatment to augment shoulder function

Magnetic resonance imaging of the brachial plexus in patients with multifocal motor neuropathy.

We studied whether magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the brachial plexus is useful to distinguish multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) from lower motor neuron disease (LMND) and whether abnormalities resemble those of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP). We compared MR images of the brachial plexus of nine patients with MMN with scans from five patients with CIDP, eight patients with LMND, and 174 controls. In two patients with MMN, and in three patients with CIDP, the MR images showed an increased signal intensity on the T2-weighted images of the brachial plexus. Tw

[Brachial plexus neuropathy (amyotrophic neuralgia) and infectious mononucleosis: report of a case].

A case of brachial plexus neuropathy (BPN) associated with infectious mononucleosis (IM) in a 13 year old boy is presented. The essential clinical picture of BPN is discussed and the main points are: acute pain at onset across the top of the shoulder-blade followed by weakness and atrophy on muscles supplied in most cases by superior brachial plexus. The prognosis is good and most patients began to note improvement within months. The main neurological complications of IM are lymphocytic meningitis, peripheral neuropathy and encephalomyelitis and they can occur without any classical findings as

Electrophysiologic evidence of polyneuropathy in a cat with signs of bilateral brachial plexus neuropathy.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 2-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was examined because of bilateral thoracic limb weakness of acute onset. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Clinical signs included muscle atrophy, paresis, depressed spinal reflexes, hyperesthesia of the thoracic limbs, and reduced jaw muscle tone. Pelvic limb reflexes were normal. Results of a neurologic examination were suggestive of multifocal lesions involving both brachial plexuses and the trigeminal nerves. Abnormal nerve conduction across the brachial plexus and delayed late potentials were found on electrodiagnostic testing, and dif

Mononeuritis multiplex with brachial plexus neuropathy coincident with Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection has been associated with a variety of neurologic complications involving the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system and muscle. We present a patient who developed a previously unreported complication: mononeuritis multiplex. This consisted of a severe brachial plexus neuropathy with contralateral cervical monoradiculopathy.

Recurrent forms of sporadic brachial plexus neuropathy. A report of two cases.

Two patients presenting a relapsing form of sporadic brachial plexus neuropathy, the so-called Parsonage Turner syndrome, are reported. The diagnosis is based on clinical and electromyographic features. Recurrent attacks, although infrequently encountered, have been well described in the past. Sporadic cases of this syndrome must be differentiated from the familial varieties of neuralgic amyotrophy in which, two main subgroups of patients are distinguished: those showing facial dysmorphic features and those with findings of a tomaculous neuropathy predisposing them to pressure palsies. Familial long thoracic nerve palsy: a manifestation of brachial plexus neuropathy.

Long thoracic nerve palsy causes weakness of the serratus anterior muscle and winging of the scapula. It is usually traumatic in origin. Isolated long thoracic nerve palsy has not been recognized as the major manifestation of familial brachial plexus neuropathy, but I have studied the syndrome in four members of three generations of one family. One individual suffered an episode of facial paresis. The inheritance pattern was autosomal dominant.

Brachial plexus involvement as the only expression of hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies.

Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP) is an autosomal-dominant focal neuropathy characterized by recurrent entrapment neuropathies. Single members of families with HNPP and brachial plexus involvement have been reported previously. We describe a family with three affected members and in which the only symptom of entrapment was recurrent brachial plexopathy. The diagnosis of HNPP in this family was confirmed by both neurophysiological methods and DNA analysis. The distinction between HNPP and hereditary neuralgic amyotrophy is discussed.

Brachial plexus neuropathy secondary to septic arthritis and osteomyelitis: report of two cases.

Two infants, delivered uneventfully, later developed right brachial plexus palsy secondary to pyogenic osteomyelitis and arthritis of the right shoulder joint. Weakness of right arms occurred at the sixth and tenth days of age respectively. Both had right arm tenderness on palpation and passive movement. Roentgenograms of their right shoulder joints showed irregular radiolucency of the proximal margin of right humerus head. In both cases, electromyography revealed various degrees of significant denervation pattern for the C5-C7 innervated muscles. Pus culture from right shoulder joints grew St

Idiopathic muscular torticollis complicated with vertebral artery compression and brachial plexus neuropathy.

Surgery of the longstanding untreated muscular torticollis in adults is limited to some complex cases because of its poor results. In this article, we are reporting a case of an idiopathic torticollis complicated with both vertebral artery compression and brachial plexus neuropathy due to fibrous bands of underlying muscles.

Brachial plexus neuropathy following attempt at subclavian vein catheterization. Case report.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The subclavian vein is often used for placement of central venous catheters, and the possibility exists of nerve injury as a complication of the procedure. METHODS: A 58-year-old woman undergoing subclavian central catheter placement sustained a brachial plexus injury. A review of the English-language literature revealed no reports of brachial plexus injury during placement of a subclavian central catheter, although three reports were found in the non-English-language literature. RESULTS: The anatomic relationship of the subclavian artery, vein, and brachial plexus

Recurrent familial brachial plexus palsies as the only clinical expression of 'tomaculous' neuropathy.

Two familial cases of recurrent brachial plexus are described and similar episodes were noticed in other members of the family. Electrophysiological investigations found impaired motor and sensory nerve conduction velocity in affected and nonaffected members. Tomaculous neuropathy was found at biopsy of peripheral nerve in more than 40% of dissected fibers. In addition, two affected members showed a reduced interpupillary distance, i.e. the most common dysmorphic feature found in the hereditary neuralgic amyotrophy (HNA). A literature review showed only two other instances of recurrent familia
