Left brachiocephalic vein aneurysm: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Aneurysm of the left brachiocephalic vein is a very rare clinical disease and only 40 cases have been reported so far. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 61-year-old woman with no related medical history. She underwent CT to investigate the cause of a cough and a mass was noted in the anterior mediastinum. Dynamic computed tomography with contrast medium injected into the left basilic vein demonstrated the venous aneurysm with blood flow to the left brachiocephalic vein. The patient had no symptoms, but because of the risk of pulmonary infarction and aneurysm rupture, the aneury

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma encasing the left brachiocephalic vein.

Epithelioid hemangioendotheliomas are rare vascular tumors, often arising from medium to large veins in the extremities. Symptoms of these tumors vary depending upon location. Rarely, tumors may arise in chest and involve large vessels in the mediastinum. We present a case of a 17-year-old male presenting with compressive symptoms of the left upper extremity who was found to have a large epithelioid hemangioendothelioma encasing the left brachiocephalic vein.

Anomalous left brachiocephalic vein: CT findings.

Eight cases of anomalous position of the left brachiocephalic vein were demonstrated by CT. Six coursed downward lateral to and below the aortic arch to enter the superior vena cava (SVC). Two cases were double left brachiocephalic veins. The superior branch was in the normal position, but the inferior vessel coursed below the aortic arch. Most of these subaortic left brachiocephalic veins enter the SVC at the same level or caudal to the azygous arch. Only two cases were associated with congenital heart disease. This anomalously positioned vessel is asymptomatic but must be distinguished from

[A case report of anomalous left brachiocephalic vein].

An anomalous case of a left brachiocephalic vein passing behind the ascending aorta was observed in a 49-year Japanese man. This is known as anomalous left brachiocephalic vein. The anomalous left brachiocephalic vein descended along the left mediastinum in a position identical to that of a persistent left superior vena cava, so the diagnosis of this venous abnormally require carefully considered. Many cases of anomalous left brachiocephalic vein have been reported based on autopsy findings, but this venous anomaly was recently demonstrated by ultrasonography, CT, and MRI.

Anomalous subaortic position of the brachiocephalic vein (innominate vein): an echocardiographic study.

In 24 (0.98%) of 2457 patients with congenital heart disease the brachiocephalic vein was in an anomalous position below the aortic arch. This is a much higher proportion of such cases than reported so far. This high frequency may arise from differences in the study population and the method of diagnosis. This venous anomaly was more common in patients with tetralogy of Fallot or ventricular septal defect with pulmonary atresia. Patients with the venous anomaly were more likely to have a right aortic arch. The anomalous course of the brachiocephalic vein from the neck to the junction of the su

Brachiocephalic jump graft fistula: an alternative for dialysis use of elbow crease veins.

Elbow crease fistula can be an alternative for autologous vascular access. Either brachiocephalic or brachiobasilic fistulas could be chosen according to the venous anatomy at the elbow crease. When a median antecubital vein is not present, the cephalic vein is usually too far away from the brachial artery. Thus, a end-to-side fistula must usually be performed after an extensive dissection of the distal part of the vein. In this way, only the proximal cephalic vein can be used for dialysis. To overcome this drawback, a brachiocephalic jump graft fistula was designed. A short segment of polytet

Cadaveric dissection of connection between accessory hemiazygos vein and left brachiocephalic vein.

PURPOSE: The azygos system of veins has many anatomical variations that can impact mediastinal and vascular interventions. While radiological reports on these are of great clinical value, this study is among the first to present a high-quality cadaveric dissection of a rare anatomical variant to supplement previously published radiologic studies. The azygos venous system consists of the azygos vein (AV), hemiazygos vein (HAV), and the accessory hemiazygos vein (AHAV), which develop from the last portion of the posterior cardinal veins. The normal anatomical configuration includes drainage of t

Brachiocephalic Vein Perforation During Cannulation of Internal Jugular Vein: A Case Report.

We report a rare complication of right brachiocephalic vein perforation during ultrasound-guided cannulation of the right internal jugular vein (IJV) in a patient with a tortuous common carotid artery (CCA). We suspect that the tortuous CCA displaced the IJV, which caused misplacement of the J-tip guidewire into the subclavian vein. The stiff dilator sheath introduced over the guidewire then perforated the wall of the brachiocephalic vein, causing massive hemothorax. This was diagnosed by videothoracoscopy. Anesthesiologists should be aware of the possibility of guidewire malposition during IJ

Fetal left brachiocephalic vein in normal and abnormal conditions.

OBJECTIVES: To establish values of fetal left brachiocephalic vein (LBCV) dimensions during normal pregnancy and determine whether routine assessment of the LBCV may help in identifying fetuses with congenital abnormalities of this vessel. METHODS: Fetal LBCV was assessed prospectively during ultrasound examinations in 431 normal singleton pregnancies. The visualization rate of the transverse view of the upper fetal chest at the level of drainage of the LBCV into the superior vena cava (SVC) by two-dimensional (2D) and 2D plus color Doppler ultrasound was evaluated. Reference ranges of LBCV d

Retrotracheal aberrant left brachiocephalic vein: CT findings.

We present a child with double aberrant left brachiocephalic vein (ALBCV) that was an incidental finding on CT. The anterior and thin branch was above the aortic arch and behind the truncus brachiocephalicus and drained into the superior vena cava (SVC). The posterior and thick branch of the ALBCV coursed posterior to the trachea and oesophagus and joined with the azygos vein before draining into the SVC. To our knowledge, retrotracheal ALBCV has not been previously described.

The Hunter pulmonary angiography catheter for a brachiocephalic vein approach.

The purpose of this work was to describe our experience in performing pulmonary angiography using the Hunter pulmonary catheter, manufactured by Cook, Inc., which is a modified 6F pigtail catheter with a "C-shaped" curve, designed for a brachiocephalic vein approach. One hundred twenty-three patients underwent pulmonary angiograms using the Hunter catheter between August 1997 and January 2002. Operator comments were gathered in 86 (70%) of the cases. The operator was, if possible, the most junior resident on the service. Thirty-nine operators participated in the survey. Efficacy, safety, and e

Sharp recanalization of the brachiocephalic vein occlusion through the external jugular vein in hemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Although the internal jugular vein (IJV) is the most widely used puncture site in hemodialysis catheter insertion and central vein angioplasty, the external jugular vein (EJV) offers an alternative vascular access point in cases when the IJV is inaccessible. The present study aims to observe the efficacy and safety of sharp recanalization of the brachiocephalic vein occlusion through the EJV in hemodialysis patients. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled a cohort of hemodialysis patients who received sharp recanalization of occlusive brachiocephalic vein through the EJV at a
