Relative size and agonistic behaviour in the female velvet swimming crab, Necora puber (L.) (Brachyura, Portunidae).

Female velvet swimming crabs (Necora puber) fight readily in the laboratory, with interactions being initiated equally often by the larger and smaller of the two opponents, but with the larger usually being victorious. In 17 out of 65 interactions, however, a smaller crab won against a larger one, and possible reasons for this are discussed. In two respects our results are surprising in the context of insights gained from games theory: firstly, the fights do not show a gradual pattern of escalation through display to overt physical violence; and secondly, fights do not become more costly in te

The sponge crabs of Western Australia and the Northwest Shelf with descriptions of new genera and species (Crustacea: Brachyura: Dromiidae).

The Dromiidae of Western Australia are summarized primarily based on specimens from the collection of the Western Australian Museum and some additional material from the Australian Museum, Sydney. The genus Alainodromia McLay 1998, is recorded from Camden Sound, Australia, as a new species Alainodromia dambimangari sp. nov. New evidence suggests that the species of Alainodromia are very likely shell carriers that also have direct development. Five species of Cryptodromia are reported from Western Australia and a new genus, Baccadromia gen. nov., is erected for Dromia (Cryptodromia) bullifera A

A new species of Cymonomus A. Milne-Edwards, 1880, from the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico (Crustacea: Brachyura: Cymonomidae).

A new western Atlantic member of the cymonomid crab genus, Cymonomus A. Milne-Edwards, 1880, is described from the continental slope in the northern Gulf of Mexico. While the only two available specimens are poorly preserved and lack appendages, they are clearly distinct from other known members of the genus on the basis of the subangular anterolateral margin of the carapace paired with nearly straight, untapered eyestalks that terminate in a slightly bulbous, well-defined cornea, and antennal peduncles that reach beyond the second article of the antennular peduncle. Despite extensive collecti

Revision of the freshwater crabs of the Johora tahanensis (Bott, 1966) species group (Crustacea, Brachyura, Potamidae), with a key to the genus.

The taxonomy of the potamid freshwater crabs of the Johora tahanensis (Bott, 1966) species group (Potamoidea) is revised. Seven species are recognised, all from Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand, three of which are described as new. The three new species were previously identified as J. tahanensis but can be distinguished by characters of the carapace, male first gonopod, and vulva. A revised key to the 18 recognised species of Johora Bott, 1966, is provided.

A checklist and key to the Ivorian freshwater crabs, with the description of a new species of Liberonautes Bott, 1955 (Brachyura: Potamoidea: Potamonautidae).

A new freshwater crab species of Liberonautes Bott, 1955 from Mt. Tonkori in the Upper Guinea rainforest in Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa is described. Liberonautes constantini n. sp. is morphologically distinct from other species of this genus found in Côte d'Ivoire and the neighboring countries. The new species is recognised by a unique combination of morphological characters of the carapace, thoracic sternum, major cheliped, and adult male first gonopod. Illustrations of L. constantini n. sp. are provided and differences from congeners found elsewhere in West Africa are discussed. The addition

Morphological and histological description of the midgut caeca in true crabs (Malacostraca: Decapoda: Brachyura): origin, development and potential role.

BACKGROUND: The decapods are a major group of crustaceans that includes shrimps, prawns, crayfishes, lobsters, and crabs. Several studies focused on the study of the digestive system of the decapods, constituted by the oesophagus, stomach, midgut tract, midgut gland, and hindgut. Nevertheless, in the midgut tract there are associated a set of organs called "midgut caeca", which are among the most controversial and less studied digestive organs of this group. This work used the common spider crab Maja brachydactyla Balss, 1922 as a model to resolve the origin, development, and potential role of

On the identity of Sundathelphusa philippina (von Martens, 1868) (Decapoda: Brachyura: Gecarcinucidae) from the Philippines, with descriptions of two new species.

The taxonomy of the Sundathelphusa philippina (von Martens, 1868) species group (Brachyura; Gecarcinucidae) from the Philippines is revised, and two new species are described. Sundathelphusa philippina sensu stricto is here restricted to the Bicol Peninsula of southern Luzon, and to the islands of Samar and Leyte. It is one of the largest freshwater crabs in the archipelago, reaching carapace widths of more than 53 mm. Sundathelphusa cebu sp. nov. from Cebu Island is superficially similar to S. philippina in morphology but can be separated by a suite of carapace characters. Sundathelphusa quir…

Ever more complex: a new type of organization of reproductive organs in female Dorippe sinica Chen, 1980 (Decapoda: Brachyura: Dorippidae).

In this study a new organization of the female reproductive organs of Eubrachyura is presented after using both histology and MRI and μCT analyses to investigate the morphology and function of the female reproductive organs of Dorippe sinica Chen, 1980. The reproductive organ is composed of two parts: an ectodermal sperm site and a mesodermal ovary. The ectodermal sperm storage site incorporates a concave vagina and a seminal receptacle, which is completely lined by cuticle and is not connected to the ovary. Additionally, a cavernous body is attached to the seminal receptacle. This cavernous b…

On the Larval Sensory Organs and Central Nervous System of the Zoea 1 of the Asian Shore Crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus (Decapoda, Brachyura).

Many decapod crustaceans occupy different habitats during their ontogeny and undergo a niche shift during the transition from the larval to the juvenile phase. Their life cycle comprises pelagic larvae and, in most species, benthic juvenile-adult stages. Already at hatching, decapod larvae possess a wealth of organ systems, necessary to autonomously survive and develop in the plankton. They also exhibit a rich behavioral repertoire to appropriately respond to environmental stimuli such as light, gravity, hydrostatic pressure, tidal currents, temperature, salinity, chemical cues, and food conce

A developmental study of serotonin-immunoreactive neurons in the larval central nervous system of the spider crab Hyas araneus (Decapoda, Brachyura).

Larval development in crabs is characterized by a striking double metamorphosis in the course of which the animals change from a pelagic to a benthic life style. The larval central nervous system has to provide an adequate behavioural repertoire during this transition. Thus, processes of neuronal reorganization and refinement of the early larval nervous system could be expected to occur in the metamorphosing animal. In order to follow identified sets of neurons throughout metamorphosis, whole mount preparations of the brain and ventral nerve cord of laboratory reared spider crab larvae (Hyas a

Two new genera and one new species of freshwater crabs of the subfamily Pseudothelphusinae (Decapoda: Brachyura: Pseudothelphusidae) from southwestern Mexico.

Two new genera from the Chimalapas region in eastern Oaxaca, and from Zongolica, Veracruz, Mexico are presented. Mokayathelphusa angelsotoi n. gen., n. sp., which is described from Oaxaca, is placed in the subfamily Pseudothelphusinae due to the presence of a caudomarginal projection that ends apically in an ornamented plate. Alvarezius n. gen. is erected to accommodate A. zongolicae (Alvarez, Villalobos & Moreno, 2012) n. comb. This species was described in Pseudothelphusa, but a recent molecular phylogenetic analysis based on partial sequences of three genes (COI, 16S and H3) places this spe

Navigating taxonomic confusion: three novel freshwater crabs (Brachyura: Potamonautidae: Potamonautes) nested within a species complex in the Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa.

During the present study species boundaries we examined in the freshwater crab species complex (comprising Potamonautes clarus Gouws, Stewart & Coke, 2000 and P. depressus Krauss, 1843). DNA sequence data from three mitochondrial loci and one nuclear locus were used for additional specimens sampled along the Drakensberg Mountains, KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. Phylogenetic analyses using Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood platforms incorporating additional sample localities using a total evidence DNA sequence dataset revealed the presence of a monophyletic Drakensberg Mountain g

A synopsis of Typhlocarcinops Rathbun, 1909 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura: Pilumnidae), with descriptions of nine new species from the Indo-West Pacific.

The taxonomy of the Indo-West Pacific rhizopine genus Typhlocarcinops Rathbun, 1909 (Pilumnidae) is revised and 22 species are recognised. The identification of these small, soft sediment-dwelling crabs has been difficult because many of the types have never been figured and described to modern standards. The identity of the type species, T. canaliculatus Rathbun, 1909, is clarified and T. gallardoi Serène, 1964, is shown to be its junior synonym. Similarly, T. genkaiae Takeda Miyake, 1972, and T. takedai Ng, 1987, are synonymised with T. decrescens Rathbun, 1914, and T. marginatus Rathbun, 19

On two species of Aniptumnus Ng, 2002 (Crustacea: Brachyura: Pilumnidae) from India, with a description of a new species from the coast of Kerala.

The taxonomy of two species of Indian pilumnid crabs is treated herein. Heteropanope neolaevis Deb, 1985, originally described from northeastern India, is retained in the genus Aniptumnus Ng, 2002 as a valid species and removed from synonymy with Aniptumnus quadridentatus (De Man, 1895). A new species, Aniptumnus bijoyi, is described from southwestern India, based on distinguishing features in the carapace, thoracic sternum, pereopods and gonopods. With these developments, five species of Aniptumnus are now recognized.

Taxonomic notes on three species of Tiwaripotamon Bott, 1970 (Crustacea: Brachyura: Potamidae) from Vietnam and China, one of which is new to science.

A new species of semiterrestrial freshwater crab, Tiwaripotamon nganima n. sp. is described from northern Vietnam. The gonopods of the new species most closely resemble T. annamense (Balss, 1914) originally collected from Phuc-Son in Annam, central Vietnam, but can easily be distinguished as it has the median lobe on the posterior margin of the epistome being more projecting, the male pleon is proportionately more quadrate and less wide, the basal part of the male first gonopod has the median part of the subterminal segment more strongly curved, and the outer surface of the basal part of the t

Significance of the sexual openings and supplementary structures on the phylogeny of brachyuran crabs (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura), with new nomina for higher-ranked podotreme taxa.

The patterns of complexity of the male and female sexual openings in Brachyura, which have been the source of uncertainties and conflicting opinions, are documented, together with a study of the morphologies of the coxal and sternal gonopores in both sexes, penises, spermathecae, and gonopods. The vulvae, male gonopores and penises are described among selected taxa of Eubrachyura, and their function and evolution examined in the context of a wide variety of mating behaviours. The location of female and male gonopores, the condition of the penis (coxal and sternal openings and modalities of pro…

Minuca panema (Coelho, 1972): Resurrection of a Fiddler Crab Species from Brazil Closely Related to Minuca burgersi (Holthuis, 1967) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Ocypodidae).

We redescribe a species of fiddler crab, Minuca panema (Coelho, 1972), from the Atlantic coast of South America. It is closely related to M. mordax (Smith, 1870), and until now, the taxon has been considered to be synonymous with another closely related species Minuca burgersi (Holthuis, 1967). However, we found that two clades of M. burgersi sensu lato were restricted to the Caribbean Basin. This distribution differs from than that of M. panema, which occurs primarily along the eastern coast of South America, ranging from the island of Trinidad to Praia da Armação, Santa Catarina, Brazil.
