[Role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in appetite control].

It has been found that in brain areas responsible for controlling appetite brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and TrkB receptor expression are also present. In addition to involvement in neurogenesis, neuroprotection and synaptic plasticity, BDNF has anorexigenic activity. Decreasing of BDNF levels in the brain causes uncontrolled food intake, in turn, administration of BDNF to the central nervous system (CNS) leads to weight loss in animals. BDNF may participate with other factors such as leptin, insulin, cholecystokinin or corticotropin in the regulation of food intake. In addition, BD

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor in patients with Huntington's disease.

Reduced Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) levels have been described in a number of patho-physiological conditions, most notably, in Huntington's disease (HD), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. Since BDNF is also produced in blood, we have undertaken the measurement of its peripheral levels in the attempt to identify a possible link with HD prognosis and/or its progression. Here we evaluated BDNF level in 398 blood samples including 138 controls, 56 preHD, and 204 HD subjects. We found that BDNF protein levels were not reliably different between groups, whether measured in plasm

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor in post-partum depressive mothers.

UNLABELLED: Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common psychiatric complication observed in women after they give birth. Some women are particularly sensitive to hormonal changes, starting in early menarche, thus increasing their vulnerability to psychological stressing agents that are triggered by environmental and physiological factors throughout their lives. Decreased serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels have been associated to different neuropsychiatric conditions and BDNF has been considered as a candidate marker for such dysfunctions. The goal of this study was to co

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor in age-related macular degeneration.

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss. There is no cure for AMD. Current treatments focus on preventing disease progression and preserving vision. In recent years, the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in AMD has attracted increasing attention. BDNF is widely involved in the physiology and pathophysiology of the retina. These include the development of photoreceptors during early development and synaptic communication between photoreceptors and retinal neurons. Under pathological conditions, BDNF affects the functions of multiple cell types in

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor and mood in perimenopausal depression.

BACKGROUND: Previous work implicates high pro-inflammatory biomarkers in mood disturbance and low brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in major depression. However, in hormonally-sensitive premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), BDNF levels are higher when mood is worse. Perimenopausal depression has not been studied to date. We evaluated whether BDNF and inflammatory cytokines predict mood symptoms across the menstrual cycle in hormonally-sensitive perimenopausal depression symptoms. METHODS: Data from 49 time points derived from mid-to-late follicular phase [M/L-FP] and peri‑mens

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor in urinary continence and incontinence.

Urinary incontinence adversely affects quality of life and results in an increased financial burden for the elderly. Accumulating evidence suggests a connection between neurotrophins, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and lower urinary tract function, particularly with regard to normal physiological function and the pathophysiological mechanisms of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC). The interaction between BDNF and glutamate receptors affects both bladder and external urethral sphincter function during micturition. Clinic

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor, food intake regulation, and obesity.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a neurotrophin that plays a fundamental role in development and plasticity of the central nervous system (CNS). It is currently recognized as a major participant in the regulation of food intake. Multiple studies have shown that different regulators of appetite such as leptin, insulin and pancreatic polypeptide (PP) potentially exert anorexigenic effects through BDNF. Low circulating levels of BDNF are associated with a higher risk of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). Strict food restriction reduces BDNF and may

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor rescues neurons from bacterial meningitis.

Mortality and neurologic deficits still occurs frequently following bacterial meningitis in children, despite antibiotic treatment. We investigated the neuroprotective effects of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) on brain neurons in bacterial meningitis. The rat model of bacterial meningitis and a normal rat model were developed. Either BDNF or albumin was injected into the cerebral ventricle 24 hours after and before inoculation for 7 days, respectively. Three of the rats treated with albumin died during the course of treatment, but none of those treated with BDNF. The neuronal populat

Role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in Huntington's disease.

Neurotrophic factors are essential contributors to the survival of peripheral and central nervous system (CNS) neurons, and demonstration of their reduced availability in diseased brains indicates that they play a role in various neurological disorders. This paper will concentrate on the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the survival and activity of the neurons that die in Huntington's disease (HD) by reviewing the evidence indicating that it involves profound changes in BDNF levels and that attempts to restore these levels are therapeutically interesting. BDNF is a small dim

Precursor form of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and mature brain-derived neurotrophic factor are decreased in the pre-clinical stages of Alzheimer's disease.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is critical for the function and survival of neurons that degenerate in the late stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). There are two forms of BDNF, the BDNF precursor (proBDNF) and mature BDNF, in human brain. Previous studies have shown that BDNF mRNA and protein, including proBDNF, are dramatically decreased in end-stage AD brain. To determine whether this BDNF decrease is an early or late event during the progression of cognitive decline, we used western blotting to measure the relative amounts of BDNF proteins in the parietal cortex of subjects clinica

Association of Plasma Pro-Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (proBDNF)/Mature Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (mBDNF) Levels with BDNF Gene Val66Met Polymorphism in Alcohol Dependence.

BACKGROUND In a previous study, we reported that pro-brain-derived neurotrophic factor (proBDNF) was involved in the pathology of alcohol dependence, and the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) Val66Met was located at the prodomain of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene (BDNF). This polymorphism has been reported to affect intracellular trafficking and activity-dependent secretion of BDNF. Our present research investigated the relationships between the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism and the plasma levels of proBDNF and mature brain-derived neurotrophic factor (mBDNF) in patients with alcoh

Expression of nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in astrocytomas.

Neurotrophic factors (NTFs) are well known to serve critical functions in neural survival, neurite growth and cell differentiation in vivo and in vitro. Previous progress has indicated that nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), two NTF family members, may be involved in the process of tumor progression. In the present study, the expression of NGF and BDNF was detected using immunohistochemistry on 70 adult astrocytoma samples collected from distinct locations as well as of various pathological grades, with an additional 15 samples being collected from normal a

Impact of Strength Training Intensity on Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor.

The present study employed a randomized crossover design to investigate the effect of strength-training exercise at varying intensities on acute changes in plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. Fourteen trained male subjects (41.0±5.8 years old) were enrolled in the current study. The strength-training protocol included bench press, leg press, and lat pull-down exercises. Participants performed four sets with repetition failure at 60% or 80% of their one-repetition maximum (1RM), with a two-minute rest period. The order of intensity was randomized among volunteers. PEG-Free Polyion Complex Nanocarriers for Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor.

Many therapeutic formulations incorporate poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as a stealth component to minimize early clearance. However, PEG is immunogenic and susceptible to accelerated clearance after multiple administrations. Here, we present two novel reformulations of a polyion complex (PIC), originally composed of poly(ethylene glycol)113-b-poly(glutamic acid)50 (PEG-PLE) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), termed Nano-BDNF (Nano-BDNF PEG-PLE). We replace the PEG based block copolymer with two new polymers, poly(sarcosine)127-b-poly(glutamic acid)50 (PSR-PLE) and poly(methyl-2-oxazol

Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor and Its Applications through Nanosystem Delivery.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a protein that performs a neurotrophic function. BDNF and its receptors are widely expressed in the nervous system and can promote the growth of neurons and the formation of neuronal synapses in the brain. Studies have shown that a lack of BDNF can lead to impairment of memory and cognitive functions, indicating that BDNF plays an important role in mental illness and neurodegenerative diseases. The combination of stem cells and BDNF-releasing nanomaterials holds great promise in regenerative medicine, especially in the treatment of neurological disea

Hypertriglyceridemia-induced brain-derived neurotrophic factor in rat submandibular glands.

OBJECTIVES: Salivary glands produce brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which increases plasma BDNF content. Salivary BDNF influences the hippocampus and enhances anxiety-like behaviors. Dyslipidemia affects the brain, promoting depression and anxiety-like behaviors. This study was performed to investigate whether hypertriglyceridemia influences salivary BDNF expression. METHODS: Hypertriglyceridemia was induced in rats by high-fat diet intake for 10 weeks. BDNF protein levels in the saliva and submandibular glands were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Bdnf mRNA
