Dissection of quantitative trait loci governing root system architecture under aluminium toxicity stress conditions in Brassica carinata-derived Brassica juncea introgression lines.

BACKGROUND: Aluminium (Al) toxicity in acidic soils is a major constraint limiting rapeseed-mustard productivity, particularly affecting Brassica juncea cultivation in acid-prone regions. The narrow genetic base of B. juncea restricts genetic improvement for Al toxicity stress tolerance. To enhance genetic variability and introgress beneficial genomic regions, Brassica carinata-derived B. juncea introgression lines (ILs) were developed and evaluated to dissect the genetic basis of root system architecture and stress tolerance under Al toxicity conditions. RESULTS: Significant genetic variabil

Creation of fertility-restored materials for Ogura CMS in Brassica oleracea by introducing Rfo gene from Brassica napus via an allotriploid strategy.

Ogura CMS fertility-restored materials, with 18 chromosomes, normal seed setting, stable fertility and closer genetic background to the parent Chinese kale, were successfully developed in B. oleracea via a triploid strategy for the first time. Ogura cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is the most widely used sterile type in seed production for commercial hybrids of Brassica oleracea vegetables. However, the natural Ogura CMS restorer line has not been found in B. oleracea crops. In this study, the triploid strategy was used with the aim to create euploid B. oleracea progenies with the Rfo gene. T

Biosynthesis and regulatory mechanisms of anthocyanins in rapeseed (Brassica napus).

The review highlights that anthocyanin accumulation in Brassica napus is driven by strong up-regulation of key upstream biosynthetic genes and demonstrates that RNA-seq is an effective strategy for identifying candidate regulators underlying purple-leaf pigmentation in rapeseed. Rapeseed is planted worldwide as an oilseed crop and has been developed as a multifunctional plant. Anthocyanins are important secondary metabolites that play diverse roles in plant development, stress tolerance, and human health. They contribute to the color variation and nutritional value of plants. Many color varian

Physiological response of rapeseed (Brassica napus) to the insecticide imidacloprid.

The widespread and indiscriminate application of insecticides within agricultural systems results in phytotoxic effects on non-target crops. Furthermore, the processes by which plants adapt and develop resistance to these agricultural chemicals are still not fully understood. This study provided a detailed analysis of the antioxidant enzyme responses, growth, photosynthetic activity, and pigment content under insecticide imidacloprid exposure on rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) plants to shed light on this issue. It has been observed that imidacloprid causes phytotoxicity in rapeseed, especially a

Identification of miRNAs that regulate silique development in Brassica napus.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of non-coding small RNAs (sRNAs) that play crucial regulatory roles in various developmental processes. Silique length indirectly influences seed yield in rapeseed (Brassica napus); however, the molecular roles of miRNAs in silique length are largely unknown. Here, backcross progenies of rapeseed with long siliques (LS) and short siliques (SS) were used to elucidate these roles. Four small RNA libraries from siliques in an early stage of development were sequenced, and a total of 814 non-redundant miRNA precursors were identified, representing 65 known and 394 no

From Glucosinolate Content to Isothiocyanate Yield: Rethinking Brassica Functionality.

Background/Objectives: Brassica vegetables are widely promoted as health-promoting foods, but their functional value is still commonly inferred from glucosinolate content alone. However, glucosinolates are biologically inactive precursors whose nutritional relevance depends on their conversion into bioactive hydrolysis products, particularly isothiocyanates (ITCs). This review aims to reconsider Brassica functionality through an ITC-yield-centered perspective rather than a precursor-content-based approach. Methods: This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the biochemical, technolo

Identification of allergens in oilseed rape (Brassica napus) pollen.

BACKGROUND: Pollen from oilseed rape (OSR), Brassica napus, an increasingly cultivated oilplant from the Brassicaceae, has been recognized as a potential cause of allergic sensitization. Allergens have been hardly investigated. METHODS: We characterized IgE binding proteins in OSR pollen by immunoblot, immunoblot inhibition and specific monoclonal antibodies using sera from 89 patients sensitized to OSR. RESULTS: Two low-molecular-weight allergens of 6/8 kD and 14 kD as well as a high molecular-weight cluster (27-69 kD) comprising six cross-reactive peptides could be identified. The three al

Effects of Fertilizer Rates on Growth of Brassica napus L.

The edible oil self-sufficiency rate of China is only approximately 30%, with rapeseed as the largest source of edible oil, contributing more than half of the total edible vegetable oil. Therefore, it is very important to achieve high rapeseed yield to ensure supply security. Fertilizer is one of the key factors affecting rapeseed yield and quality, and the appropriate use of fertilizer is essential for ensuring both high yield and high quality. To investigate the effects of fertilizer rates on the growth, yield, and quality of rapeseed, 18 rapeseed varieties were grown under two fertilizer in

Key meiotic abnormalities impair pollen viability in aneuploid Brassica napus.

Aneuploidy, frequently observed in plants, is an evolutionary intermediate that plays a key role in speciation and phenotypic diversification. However, the effect of meiosis on pollen viability in aneuploids remains elusive. Herein, we studied chromosome inheritance patterns of aneuploids with complex karyotypes by investigating the pairing and segregation behavior of each chromosome at diakinesis and anaphase I during meiosis in Brassica napus. In aneuploids, we observed distinct chromosome behaviors: (1) tetrasomic chromosomes primarily formed quadrivalents or two independent bivalents and s

Genome balance and dosage effect drive allopolyploid formation in Brassica.

Polyploidy is a major evolutionary force that has shaped plant diversity. However, the various pathways toward polyploid formation and interploidy gene flow remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrated that the immediate progeny of allotriploid AAC Brassica (obtained by crossing allotetraploid Brassica napus and diploid Brassica rapa) was predominantly aneuploids with ploidal levels ranging from near-triploidy to near-hexaploidy, and their chromosome numbers deviated from the theoretical distribution toward increasing chromosome numbers, suggesting that they underwent selection. Karyotype a

Do Brassica Vegetables Affect Thyroid Function?-A Comprehensive Systematic Review.

Brassica vegetables are widely consumed all over the world, especially in North America, Asia, and Europe. They are a rich source of sulfur compounds, such as glucosinolates (GLSs) and isothiocyanates (ITCs), which provide health benefits but are also suspected of having a goitrogenic effect. Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review to assess the impact of dietary interventions on thyroid function, in terms of the potential risk for people with thyroid dysfunctions. We analyzed the results of 123 articles of in vitro, animal, and human studies, describing the impact of b

Parental genome imbalance in Brassica oleracea causes asymmetric triploid block.

Interploidy crosses fail in many plant species due to abnormalities in endosperm development. In the inbreeding species Arabidopsis thaliana, both paternal and maternal excess interploidy crosses usually result in viable seed that exhibit parent-of-origin effects on endosperm development and final seed size. Paternal excess crosses result in extended proliferation of the endosperm and larger seeds, while conversely maternal excess crosses result in early endosperm cellularisation and smaller seeds. Investigations into the effect of parental gene dosage on seed development have revealed that MA

Glyoxalase I from Brassica juncea is a calmodulin stimulated protein.

Brassica juncea glyoxalase I (S-lactoylglutathione-lyase, EC 4.4.1. 5) is a 56 kDa, heterodimeric protein. It requires magnesium (Mg2+) for its optimal activity. In this report we provide biochemical evidence for modulation of glyoxalase I activity by calcium/calmodulin (Ca2+/CaM). In the presence of Ca2+ glyoxalase I showed a significant (2.6-fold) increase in its activity. It also showed a Ca2+ dependent mobility shift on denaturing gels. Its Ca2+ binding was confirmed by Chelex-100 assay and gel overlays using 45CaCl2. Glyoxalase I was activated by over 7-fold in the presence of Ca2+ (25 mi

Comparative mapping between Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica nigra indicates that Brassica genomes have evolved through extensive genome replication accompanied by chromosome fusions and frequent rearrangements.

Chromosome organization and evolution in the Brassicaceae family was studied using comparative linkage mapping. A total of 160 mapped Arabidopsis thaliana DNA fragments identified 284 homologous loci covering 751 cM in Brassica nigra. The data support that modern diploid Brassica species are descended from a hexaploid ancestor, and that the A. thaliana genome is similar in structure and complexity to those of each of the hypothetical diploid progenitors of the proposed hexaploid. Thus, the Brassica lineage probably went through a triplication after the divergence of the lineages leading to A.

Characterizing the circular RNA landscape in phloem sap of Brassica napus.

In plants, long-distance transport and phloem-mediated signal distribution play crucial roles in regulating stress adaptation and development. Phloem sap contains various types of RNAs, including small RNAs (sRNAs), messenger RNAs (mRNAs), and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs). Recently, endogenous circular RNAs have been identified in phloem sap of apple trees. Some phloem RNAs have been shown to have long-distance signaling functions, but for most, no functions have yet been determined. Due to their stability, circRNAs are interesting candidates with potential functions in long-distance signalin

Ethylene signaling negatively regulates rapeseed resistance to Plasmodiophora brassicae.

Clubroot, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae, poses a serious threat to the rapeseed (Brassica napus) industry. Due to B. napus being an allopolyploid with a complex genome and the current scarcity of available resistance gene resources, the molecular basis of rapeseed resistance to P. brassicae remains poorly understood. Here, we performed a functional characterization of BnEIN2 (ethylene-insensitive protein) to explore the role of ethylene signaling in rapeseed resistance to P. brassicae. The Bnein2 mutants generated through CRISPR/Cas9 technology exhibited enhanced resistance to P. brassica

The elemental defense effect of cadmium on Alternaria brassicicola in Brassica juncea.

BACKGROUND: The elemental defense hypothesis states a new defensive strategy that hyperaccumulators defense against herbivores or pathogens attacks by accumulating heavy metals. Brassica juncea has an excellent ability of cadmium (Cd) accumulation. However, the elemental defense effect and its regulation mechanism in B. juncea remain unclear. RESULTS: In this study, we profiled the elemental defense effect and the molecular regulatory mechanism in Cd-accumulated B. juncea after Alternaria brassicicola infection. B. juncea treated with 180 mg Kg- 1 DW CdCl2 2.5H2O exhibited obvious elemental d
