Healthy regulation of Tibetan Brassica rapa L. polysaccharides on alleviating hyperlipidemia: A rodent study.

Hyperlipidemia is a common metabolic disorder, which can lead to obesity, hypertension, diabetes, atherosclerosis and other diseases. Studies have shown that polysaccharides absorbed by the intestinal tract can regulate blood lipids and facilitate the growth of intestinal flora. This article aims to investigate whether Tibetan turnip polysaccharide (TTP) plays a protective role in blood lipid and intestinal health via hepatic and intestinal axes. Here we show that TTP helps to reduce the size of adipocytes and the accumulation of liver fat, playing a dose-dependent effect on ADPN levels, sugge

Physiological profile of CAX1a TILLING mutants of Brassica rapa exposed to different calcium doses.

Calcium (Ca) is an essential macronutrient for plants and its homeostasis is basic for many processes in plants. Therefore, both Ca deficiency and toxicity constitute potential issues for crops. CAX1 transporter is a potential target to obtain plants with better Ca homeostasis and higher Ca concentration in edible parts. Three Brassica rapa mutants for CAX1 were obtained through TILLING. The objective of this work is to evaluate the growth, physiological state and nutrients concentration of these mutants grown with different Ca doses. The mutants and the parental line were grown under low, con

The Defensive Role of Endogenous H2S in Brassica rapa against Mercury-Selenium Combined Stress.

Plants are always exposed to the environment, polluted by multiple trace elements. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), an endogenous gaseous transmitter in plant cells, can help plant combat single elements with excess concentration. Until now, little has been known about the regulatory role of H2S in response to combined stress of multiple elements. Here we found that combined exposure of mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) triggered endogenous H2S signal in the roots of Brasscia rapa. However, neither Hg nor Se alone worked on it. In roots upon Hg + Se exposure, the defensive role of endogenous H2S was assoc

H2S promotes flowering in Brassica rapa ssp. pekinensis by persulfidation of the splicing factor BraATO2.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a newly identified gasotransmitter that plays an irreplaceable physiological role in plant growth, development, and environmental responses through persulfidation of cysteine (Cys) residues (RSSH). However, reports on the direct RSSH targets of H2S in plants remain limited. The flowering regulation mechanisms of Brassica rapa ssp. pekinensis are a significant scientific issue in the crop production industry; however, they remain poorly understood. BraATO2 is an important splicing factor in genetic alternative splicing (AS). Our study demonstrated that H2S regulated Br

The chromatin remodelling factor BrCHR39 positively regulates apical dominance by auxin signalling in Brassica rapa.

Chromatin remodelling complexes like the SHPRH (sucrose non-fermenting 2 (SNF2), histone linker, plant homeodomain (PHD), really interesting new gene (RING), and helicase domains) control gene expression via ATPase and nucleosome-E3 ubiquitin ligase activities. The members of SHPRH have been shown to play substantial roles in DNA repair in mammals, while their functions remain largely unknown in plants. In this study, we further investigated a SHPRH member designated as BrCHR39 in Brassica rapa, building on earlier experimental evidence from our laboratory that highlighted its functional signi

Floral volatiles interfere with plant attraction of parasitoids: ontogeny-dependent infochemical dynamics in Brassica rapa.

BACKGROUND: The role of plant ontogeny on investment in direct defense against herbivores is well accepted, but the transition from the vegetative to the reproductive stage can also affect indirect resistance traits (i.e. attraction of the natural enemies of plant attackers). Here, we conducted behavioral bioassays in olfactometers to determine whether the developmental stage (vegetative, pre-flowering, and flowering) of Brassica rapa plants affects attraction of Cotesia glomerata, a parasitoid of the herbivore Pieris brassicae, and examined the blends of volatile compounds emitted by plants a

Ectopic expression of Brassica rapa BrNLP7.1 reveals its conserved role in nitrate assimilation and signaling.

Nitrate stands as a primary nitrogen (N) source for plants across diverse natural habitats and agricultural systems. It serves as both a vital nutrient and a key signaling molecule crucial for plant growth and development. The NIN-like protein 7 (NLP7) functions as a central transcription factor and intracellular nitrate sensor in Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis), yet its orthologs remain uncharacterized in Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa subsp. pekinensis), a globally important vegetable crop. In this study, the BrNLP7.1 gene was identified based on its homology with NLP7 in Arabidopsis, and

Preparation and Characterization of Brassica rapa L. Polysaccharide-Zein Nanoparticle Delivery System Loaded with Capsaicin.

Capsaicin, a natural bioactive compound, has attracted wide interest for its potential health benefits. However, its rapid metabolism and strong irritancy upon oral administration have greatly limited its further application. To address these issues, this study developed a nanoparticle delivery system using corn Zein and Brassica rapa L. polysaccharide (BP) as carriers, with capsaicin (CAP) as the core. The optimized formulation (BP:Zein = 1:2, Zein:CAP = 2.5:1, mg/mg) produced stable, uniform spherical nanoparticles with an average particle size of 203.05 nm, a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0

Structure characteristics of a polysaccharide fraction from Brassica rapa L. and its protective effect on hyperuricemia.

Brassica rapa L., a medicinal and edible plant commonly used by the Uyghur population in Xinjiang, China, is rich in bioactive polysaccharides. In this study, a novel polysaccharide fraction, BRPA-1, with a weight-average molecular weight of 57.56 kDa was extracted and purified from B. rapa L. roots. Methylation and NMR analyses suggested that BRPA-1 was a branched glucan-rich polysaccharide fraction. The anti-hyperuricemic effects of BRPA-1 were evaluated in a hyperuricemic mouse model. BRPA-1 significantly reduced serum uric acid, suppressed xanthine oxidase and adenosine deaminase activitie

The transcriptional response to salicylic acid plays a role in Fusarium yellows resistance in Brassica rapa L.

Fusarium yellows resistant and susceptible lines in Brassica rapa showed different salicylic acid responses; the resistant line showed a similar response to previous reports, but the susceptible line differed. Fusarium yellows caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans (Foc) is an important disease. Previous studies showed that genes related to salicylic acid (SA) response were more highly induced following Foc infection in Brassica rapa Fusarium yellows resistant lines than susceptible lines. However, SA-induced genes have not been identified at the whole genome level and it was unclear

Characterization of BrSTM16 from Brassica rapa and functional analysis of its role in regulating cold tolerance.

The SHOOTMERISTEMLESS (STM) gene family controls shoot apical meristem homeostasis and participates in plant development and abiotic stress adaptation in higher plants. While the conserved roles of STM in maintaining meristem stability are well documented, the functions and regulatory mechanisms of BrSTM genes in Brassica rapa cold tolerance remain elusive, hindering our understanding of stress mediated meristem plasticity. Here, we systematically characterized the Brassica rapa STM gene family and identified 31 BrSTM members, all harboring the conserved KNOXⅠ domain and belonging to the class

The Chromatin Remodeling Factor BrCHR39 Targets DNA Methylation to Positively Regulate Apical Dominance in Brassica rapa.

The SHPRH (SNF2, histone linker, PHD, RING, helicase) subfamily belonging to ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling factor is the effective tumor-suppressor, which can polyubiquitinate PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) and participate in post-replication repair in human. However, little is known about the functions of SHPRH proteins in plants. In this study, we identified a novel SHPRH member BrCHR39 and obtained BrCHR39-silenced transgenic Brassica rapa. In contrast to wild-type plants, transgenic Brassica plants exhibited a released apical dominance phenotype with semi-dwarfism and multi

Transcriptome analysis reveals different mechanisms of selenite and selenate regulation of cadmium translocation in Brassica rapa.

Selenium (Se) inhibits cadmium (Cd) root-to-shoot translocation and accumulation in the shoots of pak choi; however, the mechanism by which Se regulates Cd retention in roots is still poorly understood. A time-dependent hydroponic experiment was conducted to compare the effects of selenite and selenate on Cd translocation and retention in the roots. The underlying mechanisms were investigated regarding Se biotransformation and metal transportation in roots using HPLC and transcriptome analyses. Selenite showed reducing effects on Cd translocation and accumulation in shoots earlier than selenat

Allelopathic effects of Eucalyptus extract and wood vinegar on germination and sprouting of rapeseed (Brassica rapa L.).

Eucalyptus plantations are usually characterized by low biodiversity due to allelopathy effects. Wood vinegar is considered a complex growth regulator that can promote plant growth at low concentrations. However, there is information scarcity about the co-application of eucalypt leaf water extract and wood vinegar on plants. This study aimed at clarifying whether wood vinegar can protect seed germination against suppression by eucalypt-induced allelopathy. We examined germination behavior and seedling elongation characteristics in rapeseed (Brassica rapa L.) treated with different solutions of

Temporal and genotype-dependent transcriptomic responses to cold treatment and recovery in winter rapeseed (Brassica rapa L.).

Winter rapeseed (Brassica rapa L.) is exposed to recurrent low-temperature episodes, yet cultivar differences and reference-genome choice can complicate the interpretation of transcriptomic variation. Here, we reanalyzed 24 growth-point RNA-seq samples from the cold-tolerant cultivar 'Longyou-7' and the cold-sensitive cultivar 'Lenox' under control conditions (CK), after 3 and 24 h at 4 °C, and after 24 h of recovery at 22 °C. Transcriptome analysis was performed using the chromosome-level Longyou-7 reference genome and compared with results obtained using Chiifu v1.5. Functional analyses reve

Optimization of exogenous CeO2 nanoparticles on Pak choi (Brassica rapa L. var. chinensis) to alleviate arsenic stress.

Arsenic (As) is a regulated hazardous substance that persists in the environment, causing issues related to environmental health, agriculture, and food safety. Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) are emerging sustainable solutions for alleviating heavy metal stress. However, their effectiveness and optimization for foliar application in reducing As stress, especially in Pak choi, has not been reported yet. Hence, this study aims to examine the effects of foliar application of CeO2 NPs (75,000,000, 150,000,000, and 300,000,000 ng/L) on the growth, nutrient availability, and antioxidant enzyma

Antioxidant response and carboxylate metabolism in Brassica rapa exposed to different external Zn, Ca, and Mg supply.

Zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) malnutrition are common deficiencies in many developed and developing countries, resulting in a widespread health problem. Biofortification of food crops is an agricultural strategy that can be used to increase the levels of these elements in the edible portions of crops. Deficiency or toxicity of these cations in soils reduces plant growth, crop yield, and the quality of plant foodstuff. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of external Zn, Ca, and Mg supply on accumulation and distribution of this elements as well as antioxidant respo
