Antimicrobial-resistance and enterotoxin-encoding genes among staphylococci isolated from expressed human breast milk.

Resistance traits and the presence of enterotoxin-encoding genes were investigated in staphylococcus isolates obtained from expressed human breast milk. A total of 54 staphylococcal isolates identified as Staphylococcus epidermidis (53.6 %), Staphylococcus warneri (20.4 %), Staphylococcus haemolyticus (13 %) and Staphylococcus aureus (13 %) were investigated. By using a disc-diffusion method, higher rates of resistance, including intermediate resistance, were observed for penicillin (87 %) and erythromycin (59.3 %). All strains were susceptible to clindamycin and vancomycin. Minimal inhibitory

Promoting early expression of breast milk in mothers of preterm infants in a neonatal unit: a best practice implementation project.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this implementation project was to optimize lactation success in mothers of preterm infants by ensuring early (as soon as possible and within six hours) and frequent (eight to 12 times/day) milk expression. INTRODUCTION: Evidence suggests that breast milk improves enteral feeding tolerance and neurodevelopmental outcomes and decreases the risk of necrotising enterocolitis and late onset sepsis in preterm infants. It is widely accepted that breast milk expression should commence as soon as possible and within six hours of delivery. RESULTS: Following implementation of t

Throughput expression of multiple G-protein coupled receptors for HIV infection in choriocarcinoma cells, trophoblasts, and breast milk cells.

The chemokine receptors, which belong to G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) and become co-receptors when HIV enters the cell, have been mentioned in recent research. Numerous studies have reported that the cellular mechanism of HIV crossing the placental barrier is still not totally understood. This study was conducted to investigate whether the mRNAs of nineteen typs of GPCRs and CD4 were expressed in choriocarcinoma cell lines, trophoblasts, and breast milk cells by using RT-PCR. It was found that the expression of GPCRs varied in different cell lines. Of note is that CD4 could not be expre

Expression Profile of MicroRNAs in Breast Milk of Women With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Correlation With Disease Activity and Medical Treatments.

BACKGROUND: Although most inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) medications are considered safe during pregnancy, their impact on microRNAs (miRNAs) in breast milk is largely unknown. MiRNAs in milk, carried by milk-derived extracellular vesicles (MDEs), are transmitted to the newborn's gut to regulate genes. Aberrant miRNA expression profiles have been found in IBD within tissue, blood, and feces, but data on mother's milk are scarce. METHODS: We collected breast milk samples from 32 mothers with Crohn's disease (CD), 14 mothers with ulcerative colitis (UC), and 44 healthy controls. We analyzed m

Cell-cell adhesion molecule CEACAM1 is expressed in normal breast and milk and associates with beta1 integrin in a 3D model of morphogenesis.

CEA cell adhesion molecule-1 (CEACAM1) is a cell-cell adhesion molecule that, paradoxically, is expressed in an apical location in normal breast epithelium. Strong lumenal membrane staining is observed in 100% of normal glands (11/11), low in atypical hyperplasia (2/6), high in cribiform ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) (8/8), but low in other types of DCIS (2/15). Although most invasive ductal carcinomas express CEACAM1 (21/26), the staining pattern tends to be weak and cytoplasmic in tumours with minimal lumena formation (grades 2-3), while there is membrane staining in well-differentiated tu

Effect of maternal stress during lactation on microRNA-125b-5p expression in breast milk and on the neonatal intestinal barrier function.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: microRNA-125b-5p (miR-125b) is abundant in breast milk. However, the physiological role of milk-derived miR-125b in infant development is unknown. Although maternal stress during lactation is well known to change the lipid and protein content of milk, the effect of stress on miR-125b expression in breast milk has never been examined. The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlation between maternal stress and miR-125b expression in the milk, and to investigate the effect of changes in miR-125b expression caused by maternal stress during lactation on intestinal bar

Preterm Infants May Better Tolerate Feeds at Temperatures Closer to Freshly Expressed Breast Milk: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Feeding intolerance is one of the most frequent problems among preterm infants. These infants are fed with expressed breast milk or preterm formulas of which the temperature is not routinely measured. In this study, we aimed to examine the effects of feeds with warm milk versus room temperature milk in preterm infants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Infants with a birth weight ≤1,500 g or gestational age ≤34 weeks were included in the study and assigned to two different feeding temperature groups (22-24°C and 32-34°C). Some infants in both groups were exclusively breast milk-fed, and some re

Effect of antenatal breast milk expression or postnatal dietary intervention on breastfeeding outcomes and human milk composition in women with excess weight: protocol for the Ready, Set, Nourish study, a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Human milk is recommended as the ideal source of nutrients intake for infants. It provides optimal nutrition and critical health benefits for both infants and mothers. However, women with excess weight are less likely to initiate and sustain breastfeeding. This study aims to assess how a prenatal and a postnatal intervention can improve breastfeeding outcomes, human milk composition, and infant growth in women with excess weight. METHODS: This three-arm randomized controlled trial will include 180 pregnant women with pre-pregnancy BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 recruited from central Arkansas. Th

Maternal separation-induced changes in breast milk fatty acid composition are associated with altered gut microbiota and serotonergic gene expression in neonatal mice.

Maternal separation (MS) is a widely used model of early-life stress, yet the biological pathways transmitting maternal stress signals to offspring remain incompletely understood. Breast milk represents a primary biological interface between mother and infant, and stress-induced changes in milk composition may influence offspring development through the gut microbiota-brain axis. Here, we investigated whether MS alters the breast milk metabolome and whether such changes are associated with offspring gut microbiota composition, serum metabolite profiles, and serotonin-related gene expression in

Breast milk MSCs upregulated β-cells PDX1, Ngn3, and PCNA expression via remodeling ER stress /inflammatory /apoptotic signaling pathways in type 1 diabetic rats.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is one of the autoimmune diseases characterized by beta-cell dysfunction with serious health complications. Br-MSCs represent a novel valid candidate in regenerative medicine disciplines. Yet, the full potential of Br-MSCs in managing type 1 diabetes remains elusive. Indeed, this study was designed to explore a novel approach investigating the possible regenerative capacity of Br-MSCs in type1 diabetic islet on the level of the cellular mRNA expression of different molecular pathways involved in pancreatic beta-cell dysfunction. The efficacy of diet supplemented with Lepidium sativum (Chandrashoor) on expressed breast milk volume in hypogalactic mothers - An open-label noncross-over randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Hypogalactia is the common condition, especially in preterm deliveries. Some herbs in Indian medicines such as Lepidium sativum L. (L. sativum) have galactogogeus effects. The galactogogeus effect of L. sativum (Chandrashoora) has not been quantified in randomized control trials in humans till date. We intend to study the galactogogeus effects of L. sativum in hypogalactic mothers through an open-label noncross-over trial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The target population were women who had delivered infants <32 weeks gestation with no lower limit to gestational age and their babies ad

Heat treatment of expressed breast milk is a feasible option for feeding HIV-exposed, uninfected children after 6 months of age in rural Zimbabwe.

In the context of a prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV program promoting exclusive breast-feeding (EBF) to 6 mo and offering HIV-PCR testing at approximately 6 mo, we ascertained the feasibility of expressing and heat-treating (EHT) all breast milk fed to HIV-exposed, uninfected infants following 6 mo of EBF. Twenty mother-baby pairs were enrolled from a hospital in rural Zimbabwe. Research nurses provided lactation, EHT, and complementary feeding counseling through 21 home visits conducted over an 8-wk period and collected quantitative and qualitative data on the mothers' EHT e

A Comparison of the Timing of Hand Expressing of Human Milk With Breast Massage to Standard Care for Mothers of Preterm Infants: An Exploratory Pilot Using a Randomized Controlled Design.

BACKGROUND: Globally, 10% of all births are preterm. Access to human milk via manual breast expression is required to reduce the incidence of adverse outcomes related to prematurity. However, there is little evidence to recommend optimum timing to commence breast expression in mothers of preterm infants or the most effective method. RESEARCH AIMS: (1) To test feasibility of recruitment and compliance to the protocol and (2) to determine influence of using hand expressing and breast massage on milk production, engorgement, mastitis, and breastfeeding status at 3 months. Weight gain in infants with congenital heart disease; breastfeeding alone versus supplemental spoon-feeding of expressed breast milk: an open-label, pilot, randomised control trial.

OBJECTIVES: Infants with congenital heart disease and increased pulmonary blood flow frequently suffer from feeding difficulties and growth failure. Providing expressed breast milk by spoon has been hypothesised to decrease energy expenditure in these infants as compared to breastfeeding. This study assessed the effect of supplemental feeding of expressed breast milk on weight gain in infants with unoperated congenital heart disease. METHOD: This was a prospective open-label randomised control trial. In total, 50 infants with post tricuspid left to right shunt were enrolled in the study. In t
