Control of breathing during exercise.

During exercise by healthy mammals, alveolar ventilation and alveolar-capillary diffusion increase in proportion to the increase in metabolic rate to prevent PaCO2 from increasing and PaO2 from decreasing. There is no known mechanism capable of directly sensing the rate of gas exchange in the muscles or the lungs; thus, for over a century there has been intense interest in elucidating how respiratory neurons adjust their output to variables which can not be directly monitored. Several hypotheses have been tested and supportive data were obtained, but for each hypothesis, there are contradictor

Oronasal breathing during exercise.

The shift from nasal to oronasal breathing (ONBS) has been observed on 73 subjects with two independent methods. A first group of 63 subjects exercising on a bicycle ergometer at increasing work load (98--196 W) has been observed. On 35 subjects the highest value of ventilation attained with nasal breathing was 40.2 +/- 9.41 . min-1 S.D. Ten subjects breathed through the mouth at all loads, while 5 never opened the mouth. On 13 subjects it was not possible to make reliable measurements. On a second group of 10 subjects utilizing a different techniques which did not need a face mask, the ventil

Use of breathing retraining exercises and SSRIs in patients with hyperventilation syndrome.

Hyperventilation syndrome (HVS) is a condition that is seen in almost 10% of the general adult population. It presents with difficulty breathing, often in conjunction with anxiety, dizziness and light-headedness. We report a case involving a woman in her 30s, who presented to the emergency room with a primary complaint of shortness of breath and had a prolonged expiratory phase on examination. During a follow-up office visit, she had a generalised anxiety disorder-7 (GAD-7) score of 11, consistent with moderate anxiety. The diagnosis of HVS was made, and the patient began breathing retraining

Periodic Breathing during Incremental Exercise.

Periodic breathing during incremental cardiopulmonary exercise testing is a regularly recurring waxing and waning of tidal volume due to oscillations in central respiratory drive. Periodic breathing is a sign of respiratory control system instability, which may occur at rest or during exercise. The possible mechanisms responsible for exertional periodic breathing might be related to any instability of the ventilatory regulation caused by: (1) increased circulatory delay (i.e., circulation time from the lung to the brain and chemoreceptors due to reduced cardiac index leading to delay in inform

Asthma - A Disease of How We Breathe: Role of Breathing Exercises and Pranayam.

To describe the role of breathing exercises or yoga and/or pranayama in the management of childhood asthma. We conducted an updated literature search and retrieved relevant literature on the role of breathing exercises or yoga and/or pranayama in the management of childhood asthma. We found that the breathing exercises or yoga and/or pranayama are generally multi-component packaged interventions, and are described as follows: Papworth technique, Buteyko technique, Yoga and/or Pranayam. These techniques primarily modify the pattern of breathing to reduce hyperventilation resulting in normalisat

Breathing pattern and exercise endurance time after exhausting cycling or breathing.

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the changes in breathing pattern that frequently occur towards the end of exhaustive exercise (i.e., increased breathing frequency, fb, with or without decreased tidal volume) may be caused by the respiratory work itself rather than by leg muscle work. Eight healthy, trained subjects performed the following three sessions in random order: (A) two sequential cycling endurance tests at 78% peak O2 consumption (VO2peak) to exhaustion (A1, A2); (B) isolated, isocapnic hyperpnea (B1) at a minute ventilation (VE) and an exercise duration simila

[Aerobic exercises during mouth breathing do not change the detection threshold of H2S].

BACKGROUND: In a previous study, the detection threshold for H2S during aerobic exercise worsened with forced nasal breathing. The cause remained unclear. It is to be examined how the detection threshold changes with exclusive mouth breathing. MATERIAL AND METHODS: During a resting phase, an aerobic physical load and subsequent recovery phase, different H2S concentrations were applied inspiratory-synchronously intranasal using a flow-olfactometer in a staircase procedure. The missing nasal breathing was objectified online and offline. The reaction times were determined. In parallel, various v

Effects of mindful breathing combined with sleep-inducing exercises in patients with insomnia.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder. It disrupts the patient's life and work, increases the risk of various health issues, and often requires long-term intervention. The financial burden and inconvenience of treatments discourage patients from complying with them, leading to chronic insomnia. AIM: To investigate the long-term home-practice effects of mindful breathing combined with a sleep-inducing exercise as adjunctive insomnia therapy. METHODS: A quasi-experimental design was used in the present work, in which the patients with insomnia were included and grouped based o

Effectiveness of antepartum breathing exercises on the outcome of labour: A randomized controlled trial.

Background Childbirth is a life-transforming intense event to a woman and her family. Even though a variety of non-pharmacological techniques are readily available to alleviate the distress of women in labour, the majority of women are unaware of its benefits. The objective of the study was to explore the impact of a simple non-pharmacological technique i.e., antepartum breathing exercises on maternal outcomes of labour among primigravid women. Methods A single centre prospective, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial was conducted at the antenatal outpatient clinic of a secondary health

Morning breathing exercises prolong lifespan by improving hyperventilation in people living with respiratory cancer.

Disturbance of oxygen-carbon dioxide homeostasis has an impact on cancer. Little is known about the effect of breath training on cancer patients. Here we report our 10-year experience with morning breathing exercises (MBE) in peer-support programs for cancer survivors. We performed a cohort study to investigate long-term surviving patients with lung cancer (LC) and nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) who practiced MBE on a daily basis. End-tidal breath holding time (ETBHT) after MBE was measured to reflect improvement in alveolar O2 pressure and alveolar CO2 pressure capacity.Patients (female, 57) with

Evaluation of breath-by-breath measurement of respiratory gas exchange in pediatric exercise testing.

In adults, breath-by-breath analysis has been used for measuring respiratory gas exchange during exercise. The present study evaluates the validity and reproducibility of this method in children. In 21 patients with various types of congenital heart disease, steady state exercise testing was performed on a motor-driven treadmill. Based on simultaneous measurements of VO2, VCO2, VE and R, comparisons were made between the breath-by-breath and Douglas bag methods. No significant differences were found between both methods for any of the variables. In seven other patients the reproducibility of c
