Bioremediation by Brevibacterium sediminis: a prospective pyrene degrading agent to eliminate environmental polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Environmental abuses and subsequent array of health hazards by petroleum products have emerged as a global concern that warrants proper remediation. Pyrene (PYR), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, is a xenobiotic by-product during crude petroleum processing. Biodegradation potential of two bacterial isolates (MK4 and MK9) of Brevibacterium sediminis from oil contaminated sites was explored. MK4 and MK9 could degrade PYR up to 23 and 59% (1000 mg.L- 1), respectively. A first-order formalism with the rate constant for MK4 and MK9 were found to be 0.022 ± 0.001 and 0.081 ± 0.005 day- 1, respecti

Cholesterol oxidase from Streptomyces hygroscopicus and Brevibacterium sterolicum: effect of surfactants and organic solvents on activity.

We have studied systematically the effect of the non-ionic surfactants Thesit and Triton X-100, and of propan-2-ol (used as a substrate solubilizer) on the activity of the cholesterol oxidases from Streptomyces hygroscopicus (SCO) and Brevibacterium sterolicum (BCO). Low concentrations of Thesit lead to an activity increase with both enzymes; at higher surfactant concentrations the opposite effect occurs. Triton X-100 inactivates both enzymes at all concentrations. It is deduced that these surfactants exert their effects by interaction with the enzymes and not by affecting micellar phenomena.

Comprehensive Genome Analysis of Two Bioactive Brevibacterium Strains Isolated from Marine Sponges from the Red Sea.

Marine-derived Actinomycetota have emerged as promising sources of bioactive natural products, particularly filamentous actinomycetes (e.g., Streptomyces). However, members from non-filamentous genera have showed potential biotechnological importance. In this study, we performed a comprehensive genomic characterization of two bioactive Brevibacterium strains, Brevibacterium luteolum (B. luteolum) 26C and Brevibacterium casei (B. casei) 13A, isolated from two Red Sea sponges. Whole-genome sequencing and taxonomic analysis confirmed species-level identification, marking the first documented repo

Brevibacterium casei catheter-related bloodstream infection in an immunocompromised patient with multiorgan failure in Dubai hospital, UAE.

Brevibacterium casei, historically regarded as a harmless skin commensal, is increasingly recognized as an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised individuals. Catheter-Related Bloodstream Infections (CRBSIs) due to B. casei remain rare but are clinically significant, particularly among patients with multiple comorbidities and indwelling vascular devices. We report a CRBSI caused by B. casei in a 69-year-old male with ischemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and acute kidney injury. The diagnosis was established through blood cultures from both a dialysis catheter and

Brevibacterium casei Induced Peritonitis in a Patient Undergoing Continuous Cycler Peritoneal Dialysis: Case Report and Literature Review.

Brevibacterium casei is an extremely rare organism that can lead to peritonitis in End-stage renal disease patients of peritoneal dialysis. Out of only five overall Brevibacterium species peritonitis reported worldwide, only two of them had B. casei subspecies peritonitis detected, with both needing peritoneal dialysis catheter removal and change in dialysis modality to hemodialysis. Our patient, an elderly 63-year-old Hispanic male, was on peritoneal dialysis at home and presented with features suggestive of peritonitis. He was diagnosed subsequently with B. casei and started on broad spectru

[Sensitivity of the oxygen absorption process in Brevibacterium flavum to pH changes in the medium and the action of an oxidation and phosphorylation uncoupler].

The rate of oxygen uptake (QO2) was shown to increase in the chemostat culture of a Brevibacterium flavum 22 LD auxotrophic strain at D = 0.13 h-1 after addition of chlorocarbonylcyanide phenylhydrazone. The index of respiration control reached 1.6. The QO2 temporarily increased or decreased, respectively, when the quasi steady-state of the culture was disturbed by an acid or alkaline pulse. The quantity of oxygen required for compensating changes in the pH of the medium was expressed as O/H+ and O/OH-ratios which were equal to 3.35 X 10(-2) and 6.25 X 10(-2), respectively. The effect of respi

Activity and purification of linenscin OC2, an antibacterial substance produced by Brevibacterium linens OC2, an orange cheese coryneform bacterium.

An orange cheese coryneform bacterium isolated from the surface of Gruyère of Comté and identified as Brevibacterium linens produces an antimicrobial substance designated linenscin OC2. This compound inhibits gram-positive food-borne pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes but is not active against gram-negative bacteria. Linenscin OC2 caused viability loss and lysis of the test organism, Listeria innocua. Electron microscopy showed that linenscin OC2 induces protoplast formation and cell lysis. The native substance is resistant to proteolytic enzymes, heat, and or

High-level fed-batch production of recombinant type II cholesterol oxidase from Brevibacterium sterolicum and its validation for clinical diagnostic applications.

Cholesterol oxidase (CO, EC 1.1.3.6) is widely used in clinical diagnostics for the enzymatic determination of cholesterol in human serum and plasma. Among bacterial COs, the type II CO from Brevibacterium sterolicum (BCO), characterized by a covalently bound FAD cofactor, is particularly attractive due to its high stability and favorable kinetic properties. In this study, we developed an integrated bioprocess for recombinant BCO production in Escherichia coli. Two His-tagged variants were constructed and compared: a C-terminally tagged form (BCO-H) and an N-terminally tagged form (H-BCO). Exp

Brevibacteria tibial osteomyelitis.

Brevibacteria are Gram-positive rods found in human skin flora and dairy products. Although generally not considered human pathogens, case reports have implicated Brevibacterium species as rare causes of bacteremia, endocarditis, peritonitis, and osteomyelitis. We report a case of Brevibacterium tibial osteomyelitis in an immunocompetent individual with implanted hardware and highlight the challenge of identifying the organism and recognizing it as a potential pathogen.
