Strengthening radon surveillance in British Columbia: Insights from a qualitative evaluation of the British Columbia Radon Data Repository.

BACKGROUND: Radon is a carcinogenic gas that is the leading environmental cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. While its health risks are well-known, exposure to radon is variable and hard to determine, impeding risk assessment and mitigation. The British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) operates the British Columbia Radon Data Repository (BCRDR) to aggregate radon test results in support of research and public health action. This study evaluates the BCRDR, focusing on its usefulness and acceptability to those who contribute to and use the repository. METHODS: Between November 2024

Prenatal and congenital syphilis in British Columbia.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence of maternal syphilis and the corresponding rate of infection in exposed neonates in British Columbia before and after a serious outbreak of infectious syphilis in the heterosexual population. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of pregnant women with positive syphilis serology and reported cases of congenital syphilis in British Columbia from 1994 to 2003. Clinical charts were reviewed for demographic information, staging of maternal syphilis, and stage of pregnancy when treatment was received. The primary outcome measure was the number of c

Arbovirus infections in man in British Columbia.

During the summer of 1971, the first laboratory-proved cases of acute encephalitis in man due to any of the known arboviruses occurred in the south-central region of British Columbia. Five human cases of encephalitis with two deaths were diagnosed; three of these patients, including one of the fatalities, were proven in the laboratory to have contracted western equine encephalitis.During 1968 and 1969, a human serum survey undertaken in approximately 2000 life-long residents of the province discovered low levels of hemagglutinin-inhibiting and/or complement-fixing as well as neutralizing antib

Exploring vaccination practices of midwives in British Columbia.

BACKGROUND: Registered midwives in British Columbia (BC) are primary health care practitioners for healthy people throughout pregnancy and for approximately 6 weeks postpartum. BC registered midwives are authorized to prescribe and administer certain vaccines to adults under their care during the perinatal period and hepatitis B vaccine to high-risk newborns. However, little has been documented about their recommendations for, and administration of, prenatal and infant vaccinations. This study surveyed midwives currently practicing in British Columbia to understand their vaccination practices.

A decade of experience: Cryptococcus gattii in British Columbia.

It has been over a decade since Cryptococcus gattii was first recognized as the causative organism of an outbreak of cryptococcosis on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. A number of novel observations have been associated with the study of this emergent pathogen. A novel genotype of C. gattii, VGIIa was described as the major genotype associated with clinical disease. Minor genotypes, VGIIb and VGI, are also responsible for disease in British Columbians, in both human and animal populations. The clinical major genotype VGIIa and minor genotype VGIIb are identical to C. gattii isolated from th

Congenital anomalies in American Indians of British Columbia.

Birth prevalences of congenital anomalies in the American Indians of British Columbia are compared with those of the total British Columbia population. This study is based on data from the British Columbia Health Surveillance Registry for a 16-year period (1966-1981) judged to be the most reliable reporting period in the 35-year history of the registry. The overall congenital anomaly frequency is lower in Indians than in the general population (45 versus 60 per 1,000 livebirths). The Indian rates for individual anomalies are lower than the corresponding general population rates with the except

Active tuberculosis in Indochinese refugees in British Columbia.

The incidence of active tuberculosis in 8692 Indochinese refugees admitted to British Columbia between 1979 and 1981 was reviewed. In the first 3 months after entry into the province the rate was extremely high--estimated at 1890/100 000 (126 times the provincial average). A large proportion of these cases were of primary or minimal pulmonary tuberculosis. However, although the proportion of cases of minimal pulmonary tuberculosis was twice the provincial average, the proportion of these cases that were confirmed by culture was only one third the provincial average; this suggests some overdiag

Incidence of phenylketonuria in British Columbia, 1950-1971.

The incidence of PKU in British Columbia in the 1950-1971 period is 1/18,750 which corresponds to that found in two other Canadian studies.(2, 3) Evidence is presented which shows a trend toward a decline in incidence; however, this is not statistically significant. There is a preponderance of male cases in all age groups.

Occupational associations among British Columbia male cancer patients.

In a study of 6,389 male cancer patients diagnosed and treated at the Cancer Control Agency of British Columbia from 1950-1975, several associations were detected between occupation and specific cancers. Elevated risks for lung cancer were seen in miners, metal processors and machinists, while a reduced risk was seen in farmers. Lip cancer excesses were detected in individuals involved in several outdoor occupations, and melanoma excesses were seen for three groups of predominantly indoor workers. These results confirm previous findings in the literature, whereas the following associations hav

Are enteric infections sexually transmitted in British Columbia?

BACKGROUND: Enteric infections may on occasion be sexually transmitted, particularly among people who engage in oral-anal sexual contact. Although outbreaks of enteric infections have been reported among men who have sex with men (MSM) in British Columbia (BC), the epidemiology of sexually transmitted enteric infections has never been assessed. OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology of enteric infections in BC to determine if sexual transmission may be occurring. METHODS: A descriptive analysis was conducted of all reported cases of shigellosis, amebiasis and giardiasis in BC for the period

Alemtuzumab in clinical practice: a British Columbia experience.

Limited information is available on alemtuzumab in the nonclinical trial setting. We evaluated its efficacy and safety in 42 consecutive unselected patients who received alemtuzumab monotherapy in British Columbia between October 2002 and August 2006. Information on patient demographics, baseline clinical characteristics, dose and schedule, clinical response, survival, and toxicities associated with alemtuzumab was collected retrospectively. Thirty-nine of 42 patients had chronic lymphocytic leukemia, two had mycosis fungoides, and one had T-cell post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder. I

Infections in the natural environment of British Columbia, Canada.

The Canadian province of British Columbia has a luxurious environment, complete with the multitude of wildlife and insects, and would at first glance appear to be suitable for the transmission of diseases in nature communicable to humans. Despite this potential, such diseases are relatively uncommon, although several have the potential for serious consequences. Attention has been recently focused on hantavirus infection, water-borne toxoplasmosis and parasitic diarrheal diseases, cryptococcosis on Vancouver Island, and rabies. West Nile virus has not yet caused endemic human infection in this

Giardia and Cryptosporidium in dairy calves in British Columbia.

A study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of Giardia infections in dairy calves and to compare Giardia and Cryptosporidium infections in calves of different ages. Fresh fecal samples were collected from 386 male and female Holstein calves (newborn to 24 wk) in 20 dairies located in the lower Fraser river valley area of British Columbia. Giardia intestinalis, Cryptosporidium parvum, and Cryptosporidium muris were enumerated in each sample after concentration by sucrose gradient centrifugation and immunofluorescent staining. Giardia was identified at all farm locations. The overall prev
