Broca's area is jointly activated during speech and gesture production.

Despite the frequent suggestion in the literature that Broca's area is a common link between vocal and gestural models of the origins of language, this has never been established within a single motor-production study. In the present functional MRI experiment, participants were asked to describe the spatial properties of objects (e.g. a motorcycle) using speech, pantomime, and drawing. Pairwise conjunction analyses revealed that the left inferior gyrus - in combination with the left basal ganglia and ventral anterior thalamus - was jointly activated for the production of speech and pantomime b

Increased blood flow in Broca's area during auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia.

Verbal auditory hallucinations are common in schizophrenia but little is known about how they arise. We have used single photon emission tomography (SPET) to measure regional cerebral blood flow with the aim of identifying brain areas that are especially active during auditory hallucinations. We scanned twelve men with schizophrenia while they were experiencing hallucinations. The subjects were rescanned under identical conditions when their hallucinations had resolved (mean 19 weeks later). Blood flow was significantly greater during hallucinations than in the non-hallucinating state in Broca

Broca's area involvement in abstract and concrete word acquisition: tDCS evidence.

Broca's area in the left hemisphere of the human neocortex has been suggested as a major hub for acquisition, storage, and access of linguistic information, abstract words in particular. Direct causal evidence for the latter, however, is still scarce; filling this gap was the goal of the present study. Using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of Broca's region, we aimed to delineate the involvement of this area in abstract and concrete word acquisition. The experiment used a between-subject design and involved 15 min of anodal or cathodal tDCS over Broca's area, or a sham/placebo c

Broca's area network in language function: a pooling-data connectivity study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Modern neuroimaging developments have demonstrated that cognitive functions correlate with brain networks rather than specific areas. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the connectivity of Broca's area based on language tasks. METHODS: A connectivity modeling study was performed by pooling data of Broca's activation in language tasks. Fifty-seven papers that included 883 subjects in 84 experiments were analyzed. Analysis of Likelihood Estimates of pooled data was utilized to generate the map; thresholds at p < 0.01 were corrected for multiple comparisons and fa

Brain regions that support accurate speech production after damage to Broca's area.

Broca's area in the posterior half of the left inferior frontal gyrus has traditionally been considered an important node in the speech production network. Nevertheless, recovery of speech production has been reported, to different degrees, within a few months of damage to Broca's area. Importantly, contemporary evidence suggests that, within Broca's area, its posterior part (i.e. pars opercularis) plays a more prominent role in speech production than its anterior part (i.e. pars triangularis). In this study, we therefore investigated the brain activation patterns that underlie accurate speech

Decoding Activity in Broca's Area Predicts the Occurrence of Auditory Hallucinations Across Subjects.

BACKGROUND: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) capture aims at detecting auditory-verbal hallucinations (AVHs) from continuously recorded brain activity. Establishing efficient capture methods with low computational cost that easily generalize between patients remains a key objective in precision psychiatry. To address this issue, we developed a novel automatized fMRI-capture procedure for AVHs in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ). METHODS: We used a previously validated but labor-intensive personalized fMRI-capture method to train a linear classifier using machine learning techniqu

Role of Broca's area in encoding sequential human actions: a virtual lesion study.

The exact contribution of Broca's area to motor cognition is still controversial. Here we used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (5 Hz, five pulses) to interfere transiently with the function of left BA44 in 13 healthy individuals; the task consisted of reordering human actions or nonbiological events based on three pictures presented on a computer screen and extracted from a video showing the entire sequence beforehand. We found that a virtual lesion of left BA44 impairs individual performance only for biological actions, and more specifically for object-oriented syntactic actions.

Sulcal depth is correlated with phonological encoding during language processing in Broca's Area.

BACKGROUND: Language relies on a left-lateralized fronto-temporal network whose functional organization likely reflects structural factors that emerge early in neurodevelopment. One such factor is sulcal depth, which has been proposed as a key anatomical marker of functional specialization. Here, we investigated potential structure-function relationships with respect to phonological encoding, a core linguistic process linking lexical representations and articulatory planning. METHODS: Thirty-two healthy adults performed a rhyming judgment task, known to be sensitive to phonological coding, du

Processing of different word list lengths during encoding and retrieval in Broca's area.

Broca's area is a region of the brain involved in the processing of verbal information, including memory encoding and retrieval. This study examined differences in the neural correlates of encoding and retrieval in Broca's area using word lists of varying lengths. Differences in the encoding and retrieval processes were assessed using word lists of different lengths: short (2-29), medium (30-59), and long (60-225) Latvian language nouns. In total, 23 participants completed the memory task. Each participant performed memory tasks with two short lists, two medium lists, and one long list, with v

Rapid syntactic pre-activation in Broca's area: Concurrent electrophysiological and haemodynamic recordings.

Listeners are constantly trying to predict what the speaker will say next. We concurrently measured the electrophysiological and haemodynamic correlates of syntactic pre-activation, investigating when and where the brain processes speech melody cues to upcoming word order structure. Pre-activation of syntactic structure was reflected in a left-lateralised pre-activation negativity (PrAN), which was subserved by Broca's area in the left inferior frontal gyrus, as well as the contiguous left anterior insula.

The trajectory of gray matter development in Broca's area is abnormal in people who stutter.

The acquisition and mastery of speech-motor control requires years of practice spanning the course of development. People who stutter often perform poorly on speech-motor tasks thereby calling into question their ability to establish the stable neural motor programs required for masterful speech-motor control. There is evidence to support the assertion that these neural motor programs are represented in the posterior part of Broca's area, specifically the left pars opercularis. Consequently, various theories of stuttering causation posit that the disorder is related to a breakdown in the forma

High-frequency cortical subdural stimulation enhanced plasticity in surgery of a tumor in Broca's area.

Functional areas located near or within brain gliomas prevent the complete resection of these tumors. It has recently been described that slow tumor invasion promotes neural reorganization, and even topographic plasticity, allowing a staged resection of those tumors. Thus, our aim was to promote plasticity by mimicking the tumor's capability to displace brain function. This proceeded through the production of a 'virtual lesion' in eloquent areas within a tumor using continuous high-frequency cortical electrical stimulation (cHFCS). An anaplastic astrocytoma located in Broca's area progressed i

Domain-general and domain-specific functional networks of Broca's area underlying language processing.

INTRODUCTION: Despite abundant research on the role of Broca's area in language processing, there is still no consensus on language specificity of this region and its connectivity network. METHODS: The present study employed the meta-analytic connectivity modeling procedure to identify and compare domain-specific (language-specific) and domain-general (shared between language and other domains) functional connectivity patterns of three subdivisions within the broadly defined Broca's area: pars opercularis (IFGop), pars triangularis (IFGtri), and pars orbitalis (IFGorb) of the left inferior fr

The atypical functional connectivity of Broca's area at multiple frequency bands in autism spectrum disorder.

As a developmental disorder, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has drawn much attention due to its severe impacts on one's language capacity. Broca's area, an important brain region of the language network, is largely involved in language-related functions. Using the Autism Brain Image Data Exchange (ABIDE) dataset, a mega-analysis was performed involving a total of 1454 participants (including 618 individuals with ASD and 836 healthy controls (HCs). To detect the neural pathophysiological mechanism of ASD from the perspective of language, we conducted a functional connectivity (FC) analysis with

Altered Brain Structural Networks in Patients with Brain Arteriovenous Malformations Located in Broca's Area.

Focal brain lesions, such as stroke and tumors, can lead to remote structural alterations across the whole-brain networks. Brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), usually presumed to be congenital, often result in tissue degeneration and functional displacement of the perifocal areas, but it remains unclear whether AVMs may produce long-range effects upon the whole-brain white matter organization. In this study, we used diffusion tensor imaging and graph theory methods to investigate the alterations of brain structural networks in 14 patients with AVMs in the presumed Broca's area, compared

mRNA expression of the P5 ATPase ATP13A4 is increased in Broca's area from subjects with schizophrenia.

Objectives: ATPase Type 13A4 (ATP13A4) is a cation-transporting, P5-type ATPase that has been implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders. Our recent microarray study reported a significant increase in ATP13A4 mRNA levels in Brodmann's area (BA) nine in subjects with schizophrenia compared to controls. Following this discovery we have sought to determine whether ATP13A4 expression was altered in other regions of the CNS that are affected in schizophrenia. Methods: Quantitative PCR was used to measure the levels of ATP13A4 in BA 44 and BA 8, collected post-mortem, from 30 subjects with schizophre

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation over the Broca's area on tongue twister production.

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to explore the short-term effect of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on tongue twister production. METHOD: Thirty healthy native Cantonese adult speakers were randomly assigned to the anodal tDCS group or the sham tDCS group. Anodal tDCS of 2 mA was applied over the Broca's area of the brain. The stimulation lasted for 20 min for the anodal tDCS group and 30 s for the sham tDCS group. The participants were instructed to produce a list of tongue twisters before, immediately after and 4 h after tDCS. RESULT: Speech rate and response accurac

Cortical folding in Broca's area relates to obstetric complications in schizophrenia patients and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: The increased occurrence of obstetric complications (OCs) in patients with schizophrenia suggests that alterations in neurodevelopment may be of importance to the aetiology of the illness. Abnormal cortical folding may reflect subtle deviation from normal neurodevelopment during the foetal or neonatal period. In the present study, we hypothesized that OCs would be related to cortical folding abnormalities in schizophrenia patients corresponding to areas where patients with schizophrenia display altered cortical folding when compared with healthy controls. METHOD: In total, 54 schi

Bilateral and independent Broca areas confirmed by Wada test and functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Accurate preoperative evaluation of language dominance is critical when evaluating potential patients for temporal lobe epilepsy surgery. Although most people have left-sided language dominance, a minority of patients have been described with either bilateral or right hemispheric dominance. We present a patient with right temporal lobe epilepsy who presented with bilateral and functionally independent Broca areas, as confirmed by Wada testing and functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy selectively affecting Broca's and Wernicke's areas in an immunocompetent patient: A case report.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a rare, often fatal, demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. The disease almost exclusively presents in immunosuppressed patients, such as those with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, a hematopoietic malignancy, or a transplanted organ; it is extremely rare in patients without immunosuppression. We present a case of a 74-year-old female with radiographic and histopathological findings consistent with PML that possibly arose in the setting of Sjögren's-related vasculitis but no immunosuppression.
