Potential health benefits of bromelain: a critical review of the current literature.

This review summarizes current knowledge on bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme complex derived from Ananas comosus (pineapple), with a focus on its structure, absorption, metabolism, and therapeutic mechanisms. Bromelain exhibits a wide range of biological activities, including antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antinociceptive, antiulcerative, and antihyperlipidemic effects. These effects are primarily mediated through modulation of key inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways, including inhibition of NF-κB signaling via suppression of IκBα degradation, downregulation of MAPK

Anticancer property of bromelain with therapeutic potential in malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.

Bromelain is a mixture of proteolytic enzymes that is capable of hydrolyzing glycosidic linkages in glycoprotein. Glycoprotein's are ubiquitously distributed throughout the body and serve a variety of physiologic functions. Faulty glycosylation of proteins may lead to cancer. Antitumor properties of bromelain have been demonstrated in both, in vitro and in vivo studies, along with scanty anecdotal human studies. Various mechanistic pathways have been proposed to explain the anticancer properties of bromelain. However, proteolysis by bromelain has been suggested as a main pathway by some resear

In vivo antitumoral activity of stem pineapple (Ananas comosus) bromelain.

Stem bromelain (EC 3.4.22.32) is a major cysteine proteinase, isolated from pineapple ( Ananas comosus) stem. Its main medicinal use is recognized as digestive, in vaccine formulation, antitumoral and skin debrider for the treatment of burns. To verify the identity of the principle in stem fractions responsible for the antitumoral effect, we isolated bromelain to probe its pharmacological effects. The isolated bromelain was obtained from stems of adult pineapple plants by buffered aqueous extraction and cationic chromatography. The homogeneity of bromelain was confirmed by reverse phase HPLC,

Effects of Bromelain and Papain in Tooth Whitening and Caries Removal: A Literature Review.

Background/Objectives: The objective of this review is to establish a solid base of information regarding the use of proteolytic enzymes to replace hydrogen peroxide/carbamide in teeth whitening products. The use of proteolytic enzymes, such as bromelain and papain, can provide surprising results for solving two important aspects related to dental aesthetics: tooth whitening and the chemo-mechanical removal of damaged dental tissue. Due to their ability to degrade salivary proteins, these enzymes can be used successfully as active agents in tooth whitening and in the atraumatic treatment of ca

Effect of bromelain on periodontal destruction and alveolar bone in rats with experimental periodontitis.

PURPOSE: Several substances that have anti-inflammatory, antiproteinase, and anti-infective properties have been evaluated as modulators of the inflammatory response in periodontal disease. However, evidence for the anti-inflammatory and antioxidative activities of bromelain is limited. This study evaluated the impact of systemically administered bromelain on the progression of experimental periodontitis. METHODS: Four equal groups of 32 Wistar albino rats were created as follows (n = 8): control, periodontitis + saline, periodontitis + 5 mg/kg/day bromelain, and periodontitis + 10 mg/kg/day

Study of the Radiosensitizing and Radioprotective Efficacy of Bromelain (a Pineapple Extract): In Vitro and In Vivo.

This study hypothesizes that, bromelain (BL) acts as radiosensitizer of tumor cells and that it protects normal cells from radiation effects. In vitro and in vivo studies have been carried out to prove that assumption. In vitro MTT cell proliferation assay has shown that the irradiated Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cell line could be sensitized by BL pretreatment. In vivo: animals were randomly divided into 5 groups, Group 1: control (PBS i.p for 10 days), Group 2: Ehrlich solid tumor (EST) bearing mice, Group 3: EST + γ-radiation (fractionated dose, 1 Gy × 5), Group 4: EST + BL (6 mg/kg, i.
