Neotropical species of ElpidiumF. Müller, 1880 (Crustacea: Ostracoda) introduced into New Caledonia (Melanesia, Pacific Ocean) through ornamental bromeliad trade.

The ostracod genus Elpidium is known so far for South and Insular America and all of its 20 known species are confined to phytotelmata, mostly in tank-bromeliads. These plants, with more than 1200 species in the Atlantic Forest along the eastern shores of Brazil, can be either terrestrial or epiphytic, and occur along a vast altitudinal gradient. In recent decades, an international, even intercontinental, trade in ornamental bromeliads has expanded. These plants can be transported over large distances, and in some cases contain "passenger" taxa in their tanks, mostly insects and crustaceans. H

[Highest mosquito records (Diptera: Culicidae) in Venezuela].

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) are holometabolous insects with aquatic immature stages, which use a broad variety of larval habitats, from ground water bodies to Phytothelmata (water deposits in plants) and artificial deposits. The availability of breeding sites often determines the upper limits of mosquito ranges. We built a database with 9,607 records with 432 localities, 19 genera and 254 species. The Andean mountains have 77% of the highest mosquito records including Aedes euris with record at 3,133 m, followed by three species of Anopheles--subgenera Kerteszia--with the upper limit of 2,

Root-associated bacterial and fungal communities of the endangered páramo bromeliad Puya goudotiana.

Páramo, a tropical high-altitude ecosystem, is threatened by climate change and land-use change. This ecosystem hosts unique biodiversity like the endangered bromeliad Puya goudotiana. While root-associated microbiomes are essential for plant survival and stress tolerance, the microbial communities associated with this species remain uncharacterized. Oxford Nanopore amplicon sequencing was used on root endosphere and bulk soil samples of P. goudotiana, targeting the 16S rRNA gene to evaluate bacterial communities, and the 18S rRNA gene as an exploratory marker for fungal communities. We assess

Use of alternative plant resources by common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) in the semi-arid caatinga scrub forests of northeastern Brazil.

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is amply distributed in the Brazilian Northeast, but little is known of its ecology in the semi-arid Caatinga scrublands. The present study provides the first detailed data on the composition of the diet of C. jacchus in Caatinga ecosystems, derived from observations at four sites in the state of Sergipe. While exudate sources were gouged at all four sites in a manner typical of the species, fruit was the principal component of the diet at the main study site during most months, and a number of unusual items were eaten, including leaves, and the reprodu

Trait plasticity and adaptive strategies of vascular epiphytes to a large-scale experimental reduction of fog immersion in a tropical montane cloud forest.

PREMISE: Tropical montane cloud forests (TMCF) are characterized by frequent fog immersion and host a rich epiphyte community. Epiphytes rely on atmospheric inputs of water, making them susceptible to reductions in fog immersion, which are predicted with climate change. METHODS: We experimentally reduced the fog in a Peruvian TMCF to examine the ability of eight abundant species of vascular epiphytes in the families Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, Ericaceae, Dryopteridaceae, Piperaceae and Clusiaceae to respond to reduced fog immersion via plasticity in morphological and physiological traits. KEY

Survivorship of adult Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) feeding on indoor ornamental plants with no inflorescence.

The international trade of lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana [Asparagaceae]) is responsible for certain introductions of the exotic species Aedes albopictus (Skuse) in California and the Netherlands. Understanding the association of this species with lucky bamboo and other ornamental plants is important from a public health standpoint. The aim of this study was to investigate the importance of indoor ornamental plants as sugar sources for adult A. albopictus. If exposed to D. sanderiana, bromeliad (Guzmania spp. hybrid [Bromeliaceae]), Moses-in-the-cradle (Rhoeo spathacea [Commelinaceae]), 10

Anti-rheumatic activity of Ananas comosus fruit peel extract in a complete Freund's adjuvant rat model.

CONTEXT: Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, autoimmune and systemic inflammatory disease, which targets synovial joints leading to joint destruction mediated in part by migration of inflammatory cells into the synovial tissue. OBJECTIVE: The present study evaluates the anti-rheumatic effect of a methanol extract of Ananas comosus (L.) Merr. (Bromeliaceae) peel in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Anti-rheumatic activity of crude extract of peels of A. comosus in complete Freund's induced arthritis model in rats was studied at doses of 50, 100, 250 and 500 mg/kg b.w. for 21 days. The different routes of parallel evolution in epiarenic growth in a hyperarid desert environment.

The Atacama Desert, one of the driest and oldest regions on Earth, represents an extreme environment that has driven remarkable adaptive evolution over millions of years. Within this setting, the genus Tillandsia comprises specialists capable of surviving at the dry limit of plant life. These species exhibit crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM), lack functional roots, and possess trichomes adapted for water and nutrient absorption. Of the more c. 750 known Tillandsia species, nine occur in the Chilean-Peruvian Atacama Desert, where they colonize bare sand surfaces (epiarenic growth) under hypera

KaMYB71 positively regulates drought tolerance in Krascheninnikovia arborescens.

Drought stress severely limits plant growth and crop productivity. Although wild species adapted to extreme environments represent valuable genetic resources for understanding stress tolerance mechanisms, their molecular basis remains largely unexplored. Here, KaMYB71, encoding an R2R3-MYB transcription factor, was identified from the desert shrub Krascheninnikovia arborescens through transcriptomic screening. KaMYB71 was predominantly expressed in roots and was rapidly induced by salt, osmotic stress, and abscisic acid (ABA). It encoded a nuclear-localized transcriptional activator. Overexpre

Tillandsia landbeckii phyllosphere and laimosphere as refugia for bacterial life in a hyperarid desert environment.

BACKGROUND: The lack of water is a major constraint for microbial life in hyperarid deserts. Consequently, the abundance and diversity of microorganisms in common habitats such as soil are strongly reduced, and colonization occurs primarily by specifically adapted microorganisms that thrive in particular refugia to escape the harsh conditions that prevail in these deserts. We suggest that plants provide another refugium for microbial life in hyperarid deserts. We studied the bacterial colonization of Tillandsia landbeckii (Bromeliaceae) plants, which occur in the hyperarid regions of the Ataca

ATLANTIC EPIPHYTES: a data set of vascular and non-vascular epiphyte plants and lichens from the Atlantic Forest.

Epiphytes are hyper-diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set w

First Report of Cochliobolus sativus on Guzmania sp. in Belgium.

In 2001 and again in December 2005, an outbreak of leaf spots was observed on Guzmania sp. 'Gwendolyne' (Bromeliaceae) in a Belgian nursery. Typical disease symptoms were irregular spots with a grayish center and a narrow red-brown margin. Identification was based on morphological characteristics and molecular techniques. Isolations of diseased leaf tissues previously washed with sterile distilled water on potato dextrose agar (PDA) resulted in mycelial colonies after 7 to 8 days. Fungal mycelium grew at a linear rate of 30.4 mm per 24 h at 21°C in the dark. The pathogen produced aerial myceli
