Two Cases of Bronchial Artery Racemose Hemangioma Successfully Treated with Bronchial Artery Embolization.

Rupture of a racemose hemangioma causing dilatation and tortuosity of the bronchial artery can result in massive bleeding and respiratory failure. Bronchial artery embolization (BAE) can treat this life-threatening condition, as we show in two cases. The first case was of an 89-year-old female complaining of sudden-onset chest and back pain. Bronchial artery angiography demonstrated a racemose hemangioma with a 2 cm aneurysm. The second case was of a 50-year-old male with hemoptysis and dyspnea, eventually requiring intubation. Bronchial arteriography showed a racemose hemangioma and a bronchi

Case report: bronchial to coronary artery anastomosis--a potential hazard in bronchial artery embolization.

Bronchial artery embolization is a well-established treatment for patients with haemoptysis. Communications between coronary and bronchial vessels have been seen on coronary angiography. This report describes a case of a bronchial to coronary artery anastomosis diagnosed prior to embolization in a patient with haemoptysis.

Six Cases of Hemoptysis with Angiogenesis from Non-Bronchial Systemic Arteries.

BACKGROUND Although bronchial arteries are the most common cause of hemoptysis, other systemic arteries can cause hemoptysis and are potential pitfalls for successful embolization. CASE REPORT We present 6 cases of hemoptysis showing vascularization from systemic arteries other than bronchial arteries that presented to our department between 2013 and 2020. Chronic inflammatory diseases such as tuberculosis and pulmonary aspergillosis were the underlying diseases in 4 of the 6 cases. In all 6 cases, the lesions were close to the pleura. The abnormal non-bronchial systemic arteries were the inte

Ectopic origin of bronchial arteries: assessment with multidetector helical CT angiography.

The purpose of this study was to determine non-invasively the frequency of ectopic bronchial arteries (BA) (i.e., bronchial arteries originating at a level of the descending aorta other than T5-T6 or from any aortic collateral vessel) on multidetector-row CT angiograms (CTA) obtained in patients with hemoptysis. Over a 5-year period (2000-2005), 251 consecutive patients with hemoptysis underwent multidetector-row CT angiography of the thorax. From this population, 37 patients were excluded because of a suboptimal CTA examination (n = 19), the presence of extensive mediastinal disease (n = 15)

[Bronchial arteries: anatomical and clinical studies and strategies in surgical approach].

One of the most important and controversial aspects of thoracic surgery is due to the topographical and surgical anatomy of the vascular structures involving the mediastinum. The knowledge of the so-called "vascular time", in fact, allows to face more complicated surgical situations, typical of the most specialistic thoracic surgery. The bronchial arteries represent a paradigm of what we have just stated. The study of their anatomy (number, position, origin, distribution and relationships with the mediastinal structures) is of relevant importance, not only for the interest the bronchial vascul

The porcine bronchial artery. Anastomoses with oesophageal, coronary and intercostal arteries.

Information about the existence and anatomy of arterial anastomoses with the porcine bronchial artery is lacking in the literature. Prior to basic physiological investigations in a porcine model related to lung transplantation with bronchial artery revascularisation, this study was designed to examine the anatomy of systemic arterial anastomoses with the bronchial artery system. Twenty pigs were studied in 3 groups. In 2 groups the heart-lung block was removed with all mediastinal structures. One group served for investigation of coronary-bronchial artery anastomoses and one for investigation

Direct revascularization of bronchial arteries for lung transplantation: an anatomical study.

Direct revascularization of the bronchial arteries for both single-lung and double-lung transplantation would improve airway healing and reduce airway complications after transplantation. We studied the anatomical pattern of bronchial arteries in 30 autopsy cases. In 28 of 30 cases (93.3%), at least one left bronchial artery arose directly from the anterior wall of the descending thoracic aorta. In 25 of the 30 cases (83.3%), at least one right bronchial artery was related to the first right intercostal artery. Injection studies showed that this right intercostobronchial artery supplies the pr

Ectopic origin of bronchial arteries: still a potential pitfall in embolization.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of ectopic origin of bronchial arteries (BAs) on bronchial artery embolization (BAE) for hemoptysis. METHODS: CT and angiography images of 50 consecutive sessions in 39 patients (aged 26-93 years; mean, 70.6 years) who underwent BAE for hemoptysis from April 2010 to December 2019 were reviewed. We defined ectopic BA as a systemic artery originating from other than the T5-T6 vertebral level of the descending aorta with course along the major bronchi. The background of patients, number of BAs, culprit arteries, and treatment outcomes were compared between the

Morphological Analysis of Bronchial Arteries and Variants with Computed Tomography Angiography.

The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of anatomical variants of bronchial arteries using computed tomographic angiography in a population of northeastern Mexico. An observational, transversal, descriptive, comparative, retrospective study was performed using 139 imaging studies of Mexican patients in which we evaluated the following parameters from the left and right bronchial arteries: artery origin, branching pattern, arterial ostium, vertebral level of origin, diameter, and mediastinal trajectory. The anatomies of the bronchial arteries were similar in both genders, except di

Aortic ostia of the bronchial arteries and tracheal bifurcation: MDCT analysis.

AIM: To explore the anatomical relationships between bronchial artery and tracheal bifurcation using computed tomography angiography (CTA). METHODS: One hundred consecutive patients (84 men, 16 women; aged 46-85 years) who underwent CTA using multi-detector row CT (MDCT) were investigated retrospectively. The distance between sites of bronchial artery ostia and tracheal bifurcation, and dividing directions were explored. The directions of division from the descending aorta were described as on a clock face. RESULTS: We identified ostia of 198 bronchial arteries: 95 right bronchial arteries,

[Angiomas and angioma-like changes of the bronchial arteries (author's transl)].

Hyperplastic changes of the bronchial arteries may take the form of a racemose arteriovenous angioma or result from chronic bronchitis. Clinically, recurrent haemoptysis is a striking feature occurring in otherwise fit patients. The two forms can be distinguished by bronchial arteriography because of the difference in the appearance of the vessels. In the one condition there are circumscribed areas of arterial and venous, vascular abnormalities, in the other there is vascular hyperplasia, which is less clearly circumscribed. In both forms, broncho-pulmonary, i.e. arterio-venous anastomoses can

Bronchial artery embolization for hemoptysis.

Bronchial artery bleeding is the most common cause of life-threatening hemoptysis. The most common underlying etiologies include tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, aspergillosis, and cystic fibrosis. Bronchial artery embolization is an important treatment for significant hemoptysis, given its high early success rate and relatively low risk compared with alternative medical and surgical treatments. In this article, the relevant anatomy and pathophysiology leading to bronchial artery bleeding is discussed, including the roles of parenchymal lung diseases and of collateral and aberrant vessels. The in

Bronchial Artery Pseudoaneurysm With Major Hemorrhage After Bronchial Thermoplasty.

Bronchial thermoplasty has been found to be a safe and effective therapy for severe asthma. We report the case of a mediastinal hematoma and hemothorax developing in a 66-year-old woman several days after an uneventful bronchial thermoplasty of the right lower lobe. Evaluation revealed a bleeding right bronchial artery pseudoaneurysm. Pseudoaneuryms have been reported in association with other procedures involving the therapeutic application of thermal energy, and a single case of hemoptysis requiring bronchial artery embolization occurred in a clinical trial of bronchial thermoplasty. However

Bronchial transsection and reanastomosis in pigs with and without bronchial arterial circulation.

BACKGROUND: The bronchial artery may be vital to the bronchi and lung parenchyma, but results of lung transplantation have raised doubts. This study was performed to examine the effect of bronchial arterial devascularization on bronchial morphology after bronchial transsection and reanastomosis. METHODS: In 6 pigs (study group), the left main bronchus was transsected, reanastomosed, and devascularized. Six control pigs had the same operation without devascularization. After 1 week, bronchial arterial angiography was performed, and specimens were examined with conventional histology and scanni

[Racemose hemangioma of the bronchial artery].

Racemose hemangioma of the bronchial arteries is a rare abnormality and is characterized by enlarged and convoluted bronchial arteries arranged segmentally along the longitudinal axis of bronchus. Primary racemose hemangioma may arise from inborn malformation, and secondary one may develop following primary inflammatory, stenosing or deforming diseases of the bronchus, the peribronchial tissues and the surrounding lung tissues. The symptom at onset is usually hemoptysis. Although the typical treatments have not been established, various treatments, like embolization or ligation of the bronchia

Bronchial artery embolization leading to acute myocardial infarction: a case report on bronchial artery-coronary artery fistula.

A 22-year-old woman presented with hemoptysis for three days, averaging 150 ml of blood per day. She had no history of childhood chest disease. On admission, a chest scan suggested a potential lung infection, and laboratory results showed no significant abnormalities. Despite continuous infusion of posterior pituitary hormone, her symptoms persisted. We performed bronchial arteriography and embolization using 150-350 μm microsphere particles. During the procedure, the patient developed chest pain. An electrocardiogram (ECG) showed abnormal Q-waves and ST-T elevation, with vital signs indicatin

Bronchial and non-bronchial systemic arteries: value of multidetector CT angiography in diagnosis and angiographic embolisation feasibility analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic performance of multidetector CT angiography (CTA) in depicting bronchial and non-bronchial systemic arteries in patients with haemoptysis and to assess whether this modality helps determine the feasibility of angiographic embolisation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-two patients with haemoptysis between January 2010 and July 2011 underwent both preoperative multidetector CTA and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) imaging. Diagnostic performance of CTA in depicting arteries causing haemoptysis was assessed on a per-patient and

Delayed Resolution of Hoarseness following Bronchial Artery Embolization for a Bronchial Artery Aneurysm: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchial artery aneurysms (BAAs) are rare vascular lesions that require prompt treatment because of the risk of rupture, which can be life-threatening regardless of their size. Hoarseness caused by recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) palsy secondary to BAA is extremely uncommon, and delayed clinical improvement after treatment has rarely been reported. Herein, we report a case of a mediastinal BAA presenting with hoarseness that gradually resolved following bronchial artery embolization (BAE). CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old woman presented with hoarseness persisting for 8 months.

Major aorto-pulmonary collateral arteries of patients with pulmonary atresia and ventricular septal defect are dilated bronchial arteries.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that major aorto-pulmonary collaterals (MAPCAs) have the same anatomy as bronchial arteries. METHODS: Two hundred and thirty-eight angiographies performed on 61 patients with pulmonary atresia, ventricular septal defect (VSD), and MAPCAs constituted the basis for this study. This represented all available angiographies performed on this patient group at our institution during the period 1972-2001. MAPCA anatomy was compared to bronchial artery anatomy as described in previous publications. RESULTS: Each patient had one to five MAPCAs (mean 3.2+/-0.94). A mea
