Fine needle aspiration cytopathology of bronchial carcinoid tumors: an analytical study of the cells.

While frequently considered to originate in a common stem-cell of neuroendocrine origin, bronchial carcinoid tumors and small-cell anaplastic carcinomas differ significantly in their biologic potential and treatment. Patient management is often dependent on the diagnostic specificity of a pulmonary fine needle aspiration specimen. This study evaluated the cellular features in fine needle aspiration samples from seven bronchial carcinoid tumors and four small-cell anaplastic carcinomas of the "intermediate" type. Planimetric measurements were performed on tracings of 1,100 cells. An analysis of

[A case of squamous cell carcinoma of the lung associated with acanthosis nigricans and solitary bronchial papilloma].

A 58-year-old man diagnosed as having acanthosis nigricans symmetrically distributed on the face, neck, hands, navel and external genitals, was admitted to our department for further investigation of abnormal chest films. Bronchoscopy revealed squamous cell carcinoma of left S6 and solitary bronchial papilloma of left S3. After left pneumonectomy, facial hyperpigmentation improved slightly. About half of the reported cases of acanthosis nigricans are accompanied by various kinds of malignant neoplasms, mostly adenocarcinomas of the digestive system. The association with squamous cell carcinoma

Bronchial Carcinoid Tumors with Massive Osseous Metaplasia: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Bronchial carcinoid tumors are primary lung neoplasms thought to originate from neuroendocrine cells, i.e. Kulchitsky cells, in the bronchial mucosa, although the type of cellular origin has not been clearly understood. A 61-year-old male patient underwent surgery and microscopic examination of the specimen revealed an anastomosing trabecular bony structure among the nests of tumor cells with round nucleus, granular chromatin, and large eosinophilic cytoplasm. Our case has been deemed worthy of being presented as bronchial carcinoid tumor with exaggerated osseous metaplasia.

A case of bronchial granular cell tumor in a pediatric patient.

Only nine cases of bronchial granular cell tumor have previously been reported in pediatric patients. We present a 15-year-old girl with acute-onset right shoulder pain, discovered to have a granular cell tumor causing bronchial stenosis and a cavitating post-obstructive right upper lobe pneumonia. The patient was treated with lobectomy. Bronchial granular cell tumors are benign neoplasms that typically present with recurrent pneumonia. Imaging may demonstrate an endobronchial lesion or an associated post-obstructive opacity, but diagnosis requires tissue sampling. To our knowledge, this is th

[Metastatic bronchial carcinoid tumors].

Bronchial carcinoids are uncommon pulmonary neoplasms and represent 1 to 2 % of all lung tumors. In early stage of disease, the mainstay and only curative treatment is surgery. Bronchial carcinoids are generally regarded as low-grade carcinomas and metastatic dissemination is unusual. The management of the metastatic stage is not currently standardized due to a lack of relevant studies. As bronchial carcinoids and in particular their metastatic forms are rare, we apply treatment strategies that have been evaluated in gastrointestinal and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. However, bronchial car

Plasma growth hormone and digital clubbing in carcinoma of the bronchus.

Growth hormone is a secretory product of some primary bronchial neoplasms and has been associated with the development of hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy and acromegaly in occasional patients with such tumours; it has not, however, generally been considered important in the pathogenesis of digital clubbing. Plasma levels of growth hormone at the time of diagnostic bronchoscopy were measured in 60 patients with histologically proved bronchial carcinoma, divided according to whether clubbing was present (n = 21) or absent (n = 39), and in 13 control subjects undergoing the same procedure

Pitfalls in the plain film evaluation of the thoracic aorta: the mimicry of aneurysms and adjacent masses and the value of aortography. Part I. Transverse aortic arch.

In five instances, transverse aortic arch aneurysms were found that had initially, clinically and radiographically, mimicked thoracic neoplasms. Transverse aortic arch aneurysms display a wide spectrum of presentation: they may be asymptomatic, or they may cause symptoms secondary to esophageal, bronchial, vascular, or neural compression within the mediastinum and so mimic neoplasms. Conventional radiography in four projections and tomography are important components of the diagnostic evaluation of middle mediastinal masses. However, because plain film analysis is unable confidently to disting

Bronchial myeloid sarcoma with concurrent Aspergillus fumigatus infection in a patient presenting with hemoptysis.

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is an extramedullary myeloid neoplasm characterized by proliferation of myeloblasts which can occur in any organ or site. Bronchial and pulmonary involvement, however, is uncommon. We describe a case of bronchial MS in an 81-year-old female with a history of high-grade myelodysplastic syndrome; she was started on treatment few months before, and she presented with fever, cough and profuse hemoptysis. She was found to be pancytopenic with bilateral airspace consolidations, most notably in the right upper and lower lobes, on imaging studies. She was treated with broad-spectr

Case report: diagnostic challenges and long-term survival of a child with bronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Bronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is a rare pediatric malignant neoplasm of difficult diagnosis. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report on the case of a 15-year-old patient who presented with cough, fever, left chest pain, and difficulty breathing. A chest computed tomography (CT) scan revealed collapse of the left lung with a solid mass with poorly defined margins located close to the left lung hilum, and another smaller enhancing solid nodule located adjacent to the aortic arch. Biopsy of the lesion revealed a malignant epithelial neoplasm with clear cell morphology, overexpression

[Bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumours].

Carcinoids are neuroendocrine neoplasms. Bronchial carcinoids are unusual, malignant primary neoplasms that characteristically involve the central airways and typically exhibit well-defined margins and bronchial-related growth. Bronchial carcinoids include low-grade typical carcinoids and the more aggressive atypical ones. They usually affect patients in the 3rd through the 7th decade of life who are often symptomatic with cough, hemoptysis or obstructive pneumonia. Rarely, the initial symptoms are related to the secretion of hormones causing carcinoid or other endocrine syndromes. Bronchial c

Ectopic secretion of a growth hormone-releasing factor. Report of a case of acromegaly with bronchial carcinoid tumor.

Rarely, acromegaly is produced by neuroendocrine neoplasms elaborating a substance similar to or identical with growth hormone-releasing factor. This report reviews the cases described to date and presents the clinicopathologic features of a patient with acromegaly, mild sellar enlargement, and elevated growth hormone levels associated with a large bronchial carcinoid tumor. Normalization of serum growth hormone levels and regression of acromegaly followed resection of the bronchial tumor, which was shown, by bioassay and immunocytochemistry, to contain a growth hormone-releasing factor.

Bronchoscopic removal of bronchial carcinoid tumors: Case series and literature review.

Bronchoscopy is the primary tool for evaluating the histopathology of endobronchial carcinoid tumors. Carcinoids are rare neuroendocrine neoplasms found chiefly in young adults, with a low tendency to metastasize. They can be located in the bronchus, either centrally or peripherally. Central bronchial tumors are usually symptomatic. This article describes the successful general anesthesia management of two cases of bronchial carcinoid for bronchoscopic debulking of the tumors with laser heat therapy. The patients improved symptomatically after debulking. Periods of oxygen desaturation occurred

[The so-called lung adenomatosis of sheep--an interesting pneumopathy from the comparative pathologic view].

Contrary to conditions in human pathology, primary pulmonary neoplasms are rare in animals. The so-called pulmonary adenomatosis of sheep (PAS) is of greater importance among the epithelial lung tumors of domestic animals. PAS is a chronic, lethal pneumopathy caused by an oncogenic retrovirus. It is associated with the category of slow virus infections for its extremely long incubation period. PAS is characterized as a primary multicentric epithelial neoplasm which develops from proliferating alveolar pneumocytes II and non-ciliated bronchial epithelial cells. It has been recently classified a

Primary bronchial carcinoid: A rare differential diagnosis of pulmonary koch in young adult patient.

Bronchial carcinoids are uncommon, slow growing, low-grade malignant neoplasms comprising 1-2% of all primary lung cancers. They are thought to arise from neuroendocrine/Kulchitsky's cells of bronchial epithelium. Histological features range from low-grade typical to more aggressive atypical carcinoids. Clinically they may be asymptomatic, present with nonresolving recurrent pneumonitis, hemoptysis, or with paraneoplastic syndromes. Central bronchial carcinoids are more common than the peripheral type and are seen as endobronchial nodule or hilar/perihilar mass closely related to the adjacent

A retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst mimicking adrenal tumour in an adult: is differential diagnosis truly possible?

Bronchogenic cysts are developmental abnormalities of the primitive foregut resulting from aberrant budding from the ventral diverticulum. A retroperitoneal position for a bronchial cyst is extremely unusual and should be differentiated from other neoplastic lesions. Although histologically they can be differentiated from other lesions, bronchial cysts may show various pathological patterns of differentiation that may cause confusion in differentiating them from cystic teratomas. This is a case of a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst featuring uncommon histological findings, which raises the qu

[Foreign body granuloma mimicking bronchial tumor. Aspects in x-ray computed tomography with views by virtual endoscopy].

The aim of this study is to report the spiral CT findings of an endobronchial foreign body (chicken's bone) unknown on the postero-anterior chest radiograph and on the first bronchoscopy. The double originality of this case is the association with endobronchial actinomycosis mimicking a bronchial neoplasm and the utilization of virtual endoscopy by endoluminal 3D reconstruction in this context which has never been reported. The endoluminal 3D reconstruction of the bronchial tree could help guide the endoscopic procedure by better localization of the lesions.
