Bronchopulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital malformation, consisting in a mass of nonfunctioning lung tissue with no connection to the tracheobronchial tree. It can be classified into intra- and extra-lobar. Extra-lobar bronchopulmonary sequestration accounts for 25% of them; of these, only 1% are intra-diaphragmatic. There is little international literature about intra-diaphragmatic bronchopulmonary sequestration and its diagnosis and treatment remain a challenge for the surgeon. Our case is a newborn with antenatal diagnosis of an abdominal mass by ultrasound and magnetic resonance i

Bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS), a non-functional pulmonary tissue mass, when complicated by fetal hydrops, carries a high risk of perinatal mortality. However, a limited number of cases of BPS complicated by fetal hydrops with an informative clinical course have been reported. We report here on three cases of BPS complicated by fetal hydrothorax and hydrops that were successfully treated by pleuroamniotic shunting, which should be considered as a treatment option for fetal hydrothorax and hydrops associated with BPS.

Bronchopulmonary sequestration with associated nonimmune hydrops has been previously reported with generally poor prognosis for the neonate. We report a case of bronchopulmonary sequestration and associated pleural effusion successfully managed with a transthoracic catheter placement. The embryology and clinical pathophysiology of bronchopulmonary sequestration are discussed.

This is a unique case with an initial suspicion of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome in monochorionic twins, leading to hydrops fetalis. The recurrence of left pleural effusion complicated the initial diagnosis. An incidental finding of a lung lesion revealed bronchopulmonary sequestration on further investigation. A customised dexamethasone regimen successfully managed the recurrent pleural effusion, avoiding the need for early thoracic surgery.

We report a case of bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS) in a 60 year old man with recurrent cough. After failed antibiotic therapy for presumed left lower lobe (LLL) pneumonia seen on chest radiographs, bronchoscopy was performed revealing cryptogenic organizing pneumonia. Further work-up with thoracic imaging demonstrates a feeding artery from the thoracic aorta to the LLL consolidation indicating the presence of BPS. A brief review of the clinical and radiological features and management options of BPS are listed, with particular emphasis on the various imaging modalities and techniques in

BACKGROUND: An asymptomatic SCUBA (Self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) diver was discovered to have an intralobar bronchopulmonary sequestration during routine pre-course screening. This is the first reported case of a diver who, having previously completed several recreational and military diving courses, was subsequently diagnosed with a congenital lung condition, possibly contraindicating diving. Presently, there is no available literature providing guidance on the diving fitness of patients with such a condition.
CASE PRESENTATION: An asymptomatic 26-year-old male diver was nom

We present three cases of intralobar bronchopulmonary sequestrations with associated congenital bronchogenic cysts. As congenital abnormalities tend to be found together, these cases question the notion that intralobar sequestrations only occur secondary to chronic inflammation or infection, and suggest they can be congenital lesions.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the CT characteristics of bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS) and determine the imaging features in predicted hybrid lesions and sequestration subtypes (intralobar vs. extralobar sequestration).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a multicenter retrospective study in which all surgical pathology specimens of lung sequestration performed in a tertiary hospital system were reviewed from January 2008 to January 2026. In total, 52 pathologic samples of lung sequestrations were analyzed and compared with preoperative imaging features. Imaging features including anatomic and vas

Background: Idiopathic lobar emphysema (ILE) and bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS) are two of the well-characterized pulmonary malformations. Case report: An antenatally detected case of a left bronchopulmonary malformation (BPM) was clinicoradiologically diagnosed to be a left upper lobar emphysema with isolated dextrocardia in the neonatal period. Besides the emphysematous left upper lobe, an accessory lobe akin to an extra lobar BPS was an operative surprise. Histopathological examination of both excised lobes led to a revised diagnosis of a 'hybrid' malformation comprising lobar emphyse

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the growth of fetal lung lesions using 3-dimensional ultrasonography (3DUS) and to note the clinical outcomes of infants with congenital bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS) diagnosed prenatally.
METHODS: Twenty-two cases of intrathoracic BPS diagnosed prenatally occurred between May 2005 and September 2008. The volume of the BPS lesion (V(mass)) and the volume of the fetal chest (V(chest)) were measured with the 3DUS software Virtual Organ Computer-Aided Analysis (VOCAL; GE Healthcare, Kretztechnik, Zipf, Austria). The clinical outcomes of a

Bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS) is a congenital anomaly of the lung characterised by non-functioning pulmonary tissue that receives its blood supply from an anomalous systemic artery, most commonly from the aorta. Although typically diagnosed in childhood or adolescence, BPS can present later in life and may mimic more common pulmonary conditions. We present the case of a male patient in his late 60s with a persistent non-productive cough, in whom imaging revealed a sequestered lung segment with a feeding vessel arising directly from the descending aorta. This case emphasises the importan

Bronchopulmonary sequestration is a congenital abnormality characterized by non-functioning lung tissue, abnormal connection with the tracheobronchial tree and anomalous systemic arterial supply. Although considered a rare phenomenon presenting early in life, sequestration may also present with recurrent chest infections in late adulthood. Additionally, bronchopulmonary sequestration may rarely be incidentally encountered during thoracic surgery. Several subtypes exist including intralobar, extralobar and hybrid bronchopulmonary sequestration (congenital pulmonary artery malformation). Surgica

PURPOSE: To evaluate the prenatal sonographic predictive markers of the outcome in fetuses with bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS).
METHODS: BPS size and diameter of the feeding artery (FA) were measured prenatally and postnatally. Velocity of the FA and the left ventricular-modified myocardial performance index (LV mod-MPI) were also evaluated prenatally.
RESULTS: Forty-seven women were included in the study. Mean gestational age, mass size, diameter and velocity of the FA, and LV mod-MPI at prenatal diagnosis were 23.5 ± 2.2 weeks, 3.6 ± 8.3 cm, 2.3 ± 0.6 mm, 46.6 ± 15.4 cm/s, and 0.46 ±

Bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS) is a lung mass that does not communicate with the tracheobronchial tree or the pulmonary arterial vasculature, and thus does not play a role in oxygenation. This article discusses the etiology of BPS, as well as its pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, imaging studies used to diagnose, and treatment options in both pediatric and adult patients.

Bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS), which can be intralobar or extralobar, is a rare developmental anomaly of the lung characterized by nonfunctional pulmonary tissue without communication with the tracheobronchial tree and with an aberrant systemic arterial blood supply. The intralobar type is typically within the pleural cavity with an arterial feeding vessel generally arising from the thoracic aorta and with venous drainage into the left atrium. The prognosis is poor in cases diagnosed before 26 weeks' gestation and when there is mediastinal shift, polyhydramnios and fetal hydrops. The id
