Broussonetia papyrifera ameliorates imiquimod-induced psoriasis-like skin inflammation in mice by modulating the TLR4/NF-κB and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways.

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory skin disease, and the inflammatory response plays an important role in its development and progression. Psoriasis can appear at any age and occurs around the world. The pathogenesis of psoriasis has not been fully elucidated, and there is currently no effective treatment method in clinical practice. Broussonetia papyrifera is a traditional Chinese medicine that exhibited a significant therapeutic effect on psoriasis in our previous study due to its remarkable anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. However, its mechanism of action in

Exploring the aerobic stability, antioxidant and microbial community of Broussonetia papyrifera ensiled with ferulic acid esterase-producing Lactiplantibacillus plantarum in combination with cellulase and/or xylanase.

BACKGROUND: Ferulic acid possesses certain antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Additionally, ferulic acid esterase (FAE) and cellulolytic enzymes have been associated with synergistic degradation of ferulic acid ester bonds, thereby facilitating greater release of ferulic acid from lignocellulose, which could have important effects on silage quality and aerobic stability. METHODS: This study examined the effects of ensiling Broussonetia papyrifera with FAE-producing Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (LP), cellulase (CE) and xylanase (XY) under aerobic exposure conditions. The following trea

Synergistic effects of ferulic acid esterase-producing lactic acid bacteria, cellulase and xylanase on the fermentation characteristics, fibre and nitrogen components and microbial community structure of Broussonetia papyrifera during ensiling.

BACKGROUND: The high fibre content of whole plants of Broussonetia papyrifera limits its efficient utilization. Ferulic acid esterase (FAE), in combination with xylanase, can effectively cleave the lignin-carbohydrate complex, promoting the function of cellulase. However, little is known about the impact of these additives on silage. To effectively utilize natural woody plant resources, FAE-producing Lactiplantibacillus plantarum RO395, xylanase (XY) and cellulase (CE) were used to investigate the dynamic fermentation characteristics, fibre and nitrogen components and microbial community struc

Metagenomic and microbiological analyses of historical manuscripts for bacterial community profiling and bacteria-related biodeterioration assessment.

Bacteria are important agents in the biodeterioration of cultural heritage objects, including historical manuscripts. Characterizing bacterial communities and generating robust microbiological data has therefore become crucial for conservation and restoration strategies. In this study, we investigated the bacterial communities associated with biodeterioration in six historical manuscripts using both culture-dependent and culture-independent (Illumina MiSeq) approaches. Culture-dependent methods yielded only 16 viable and culturable isolates, highlighting the limitations of traditional techniqu

Performance of Handmade Ultra-Lightweight Hanji Treated with Wet-Strength Agents for Paper-Based Cultural Heritage Conservation.

Ultra-lightweight paper is indispensable for conserving paper-based cultural heritage. However, machine-made thin paper (MTP) exhibits pronounced strength anisotropy caused by preferential fiber orientation. This study evaluated handmade ultra-lightweight Hanji (7.2 g/m2) produced from Broussonetia kazinoki bast fiber pulp cooked with traditional plant-ash lye and formed by the oebal method, as a potential alternative to MTP (7.0 g/m2) in paper conservation. Polyamideamine-epichlorohydrin (PAE) and glyoxylated polyacrylamide (GPAM) were applied as wet-strength agents, either alone or combined

Tea Tree Essential Oil Enriches Lactic Acid Bacteria and Improves Paper Mulberry Silage Quality.

Paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) is a high-protein forage, but its high buffering capacity and low water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) content hinder silage fermentation. This study evaluated the effect of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) essential oil (TTO) as a natural additive for paper mulberry silage. TTO was added at 0 (CK), 500 (CSD), and 1000 mg/kg (CSG) fresh weight, with samples collected on days 7, 15, 30, and 90. After 90 days, CSD had the lowest pH and the highest lactic acid content. NH3-N/TN was significantly lower than in CK (p < 0.05), and the retention of dry matter, cr

A chromosome-level genome assembly for Ficus carica provides genetic insights into flowerless fig fruit development, psoralen biosynthesis, and drought tolerance.

Ficus carica L., an ancient crop of considerable economic value, exhibits distinctive biological traits, including flowerless fruit (syconium) development, psoralen biosynthesis, and drought tolerance. In this study, we present a chromosome-level genome assembly (323.03 Mb, N50 = 23.82 Mb) of F. carica, revealing an evolutionary divergence from the closely related genus Broussonetia approximately 50 million years ago. Comparative genomic analyses revealed a contraction in the s-domain receptor-like kinase gene family, which is associated with unisexual fruit formation, and identified conserved

Kazinol U inhibits melanogenesis through the inhibition of tyrosinase-related proteins via AMP kinase activation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Kazinol U is a prenylated flavan isolated from an extract of Broussonetia kazinoki Sieb (Moraceae). Kazinol U has shown cytoprotective effects against cytokine-induced apoptotic cell death and induces AMP kinase (AMPK) activation through LKB1 activation. However, kazinol U has not been tested as a regulator of melanogenesis, although bark extract of B. kazinoki has been used as a cosmetic ingredient for skin conditioning. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: We cultured mouse, human melanoma cells and normal human melanocytes to demonstrate anti-melanogenic effects of kazinol U. A t

Moraceae Plants with Tyrosinase Inhibitory Activity: A Review.

Hyperpigmentation is an abnormal darkening of the skin mostly derived from excessive melanin production. It is typical of skin disorders including melasma associated to pregnancy or age, freckles, sun freckles and photoaging, age spots, and actinic keratosis. These conditions can be uncomfortable for aesthetic reasons and specific depigmenting treatment is frequently requested. Tyrosinase (EC 1.14.18.1) is the rate-limiting enzyme of melanin synthesis and the main target of antihyperpigmentation remedies. Much interest is focused on compounds able to inhibit tyrosinase activity, particularly n

Chemodiversity of dissolved organic matter and its association with the bacterial community at a zinc smelting slag site after 10 years of direct revegetation.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a critical role in driving the development of biogeochemical functions in revegetated metal smelting slag sites, laying a fundamental basis for their sustainable rehabilitation. However, the DOM composition at the molecular level and its interaction with the microbial community in such sites undergoing long-term direct revegetation remain poorly understood. This study investigated the chemodiversity of DOM and its association with the bacterial community in the rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere slags of four plant species (Arundo donax, Broussonetia papyrifer
