Brucella vertebral osteomyelitis misidentified as an Ochrobactrum anthropi infection.

Ochrobactrum anthropi is a Gram-negative bacillus widely distributed in nature. It is a low virulence and low pathogenic microorganism and human infection by this agent is considered rare. This microorganism can cause bacteremia and in some cases can lead to osteomyelitis and endocarditis. Included in Brucellaceae family, this bacterium is phenotypically and genetically closely related to the Brucella genus and may be misidentified by rapid identification systems. The authors describe a patient admitted to the Infectious Diseases Department with vertebral osteomyelitis initially identified as

Brucella suis bacteremia misidentified as Ochrobactrum anthropi by the VITEK 2 system.

Ochrobactrum and Brucella are genetically related genera of the family Brucellaceae, sharing 98.8% rRNA similarity. Because of their phenotypic similarity, Ochrobactrum can be miscoded as Brucella by automated identification systems. The misidentification on blood cultures (BCs) of B. suis as O. anthropi by the VITEK 2 system is herein described. A 67-year-old male with a prosthetic mitral valve and fever was admitted with bacteremia due to a Gram-negative coccobacillus identified as O. anthropi by VITEK 2. The patient's fever persisted along with positive blood cultures despite specific antim

Correlation Between Microbial Community and Hatching Failure in Loggerhead Sea Turtle Caretta caretta.

Microbial communities provide essential information about host ecology and could be helpful as a tool to improve species conservation efforts. However, microbes can also infect and compromise the host development process and viability. Caretta caretta is the most widespread marine turtle species in the Mediterranean basin and is the only species of sea turtle nesting along the Italian coasts. Little is known about the microbiota composition of the nest of sea turtles and its correlation with hatching failures. In this study, the microbial composition of two nests of C. caretta featuring differ

High diversity of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing bacteria in an urban river sediment habitat.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) have been surveyed widely in water bodies, but few studies have determined the diversity of ARB in sediment, which is the most taxon-abundant habitat in aquatic environments. We isolated 56 extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria from a single sediment sample taken from an urban river in China. All strains were confirmed for ESBL-producing capability by both the clavulanic acid combination disc method and MIC determination. Of the isolated strains, 39 were classified as Enterobacteriaceae (consisting of the genera Escherichia, Klebsiella,

Efficient biotransformation of sulfide in anaerobic sequencing batch reactor by composite microbial agent: performance optimization and microbial community analysis.

Sulfur-containing wastewater is very common as an industrial waste, yet a high-efficiency composite microbial agent for sulfur-containing wastewater treatment is still lacking. In this work, three novel and efficient desulfurizing bacteria were isolated from the sewage treatment tank of Zhejiang Satellite Energy Co., Ltd. They were identified as Brucella melitensis (S1), Ochrobactrum oryzae (S8), and Achromobacter xylosoxidans (S9). These three strains of bacteria were responsible for the oxidative metabolism of sodium sulfide via a similar polythionate pathway, which could be expressed as fol

A Key Regulator of the Glycolytic and Gluconeogenic Central Metabolic Pathways in Sinorhizobium meliloti.

The order Rhizobiales contains numerous agriculturally, biotechnologically, and medically important bacteria, including the rhizobia, and the genera Agrobacterium, Brucella, and Methylobacterium, among others. These organisms tend to be metabolically versatile, but there has been relatively little investigation into the regulation of their central carbon metabolic pathways. Here, RNA-sequencing and promoter fusion data are presented to show that the PckR protein is a key regulator of central carbon metabolism in Sinorhizobium meliloti; during growth with gluconeogenic substrates, PckR represse

The twin-arginine translocation pathway in α-proteobacteria is functionally preserved irrespective of genomic and regulatory divergence.

The twin-arginine translocation (Tat) pathway exports fully folded proteins out of the cytoplasm of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Although much progress has been made in unraveling the molecular mechanism and biochemical characterization of the Tat system, little is known concerning its functionality and biological role to confer adaptive skills, symbiosis or pathogenesis in the α-proteobacteria class. A comparative genomic analysis in the α-proteobacteria class confirmed the presence of tatA, tatB, and tatC genes in almost all genomes, but significant variations in gene synteny an

Exploration of functional genes in Brucella anthropi for hexavalent chromium bioremoval through gene mining: A whole genome sequencing based approach.

Development of whole genome sequencing (WGS) has revolutionized in understanding the functional genes and molecular perspectives involved in the resistance of heavy metals. In the current study, VITPLJ18 bacterial isolate obtained from tannery industry showed a maximum tolerable concentration of 1300 ppm against hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] and specific growth rate (µmax) for the cells at 650 ppm of chromium was found to be 0.088 h⁻¹ . Whole genome analysis confirmed VITPLJ18 to be Brucella anthropi which belonged to the family Brucellaceae. Mining of VITPLJ18 genome revealed the total number

Aurantimonas coralicida gen. nov., sp. nov., the causative agent of white plague type II on Caribbean scleractinian corals.

A bacterium previously isolated from a diseased colony of the scleractinian coral Dichocoenia stokesi (common name elliptical star coral) was subjected to a detailed polyphasic taxonomic characterization. The isolate, designated WP1T, was halophilic and strictly aerobic and formed golden-orange-pigmented colonies after prolonged incubation. Cells of WP1T were gram-negative, rod-shaped and showed a characteristic branching rod morphology. Chemotaxonomically, WP1T was characterized by having Q-10 as the major respiratory lipoquinone and sym-homospermidine as the main component of the cellular po

Rectal Bacteria and Antibiotic Resistance in Zoo Animals in Algeria.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Healthy animals can harbor complex and diverse bacterial communities, including pathogenic taxa capable of causing disease and mortality, and individuals that are kept in zoos may act as asymptomatic carriers of a broad range of pathogens. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the rectal bacterial microbiota of multiple animal classes (reptiles, birds, and mammals), maintained in enclosures, identify known or emerging bacterial pathogens, and characterize the antibiotic resistance profiles of the isolated strains. METHODS: A total of 40 samples were collected by re

Phylogenomics and signature proteins for the alpha proteobacteria and its main groups.

BACKGROUND: Alpha proteobacteria are one of the largest and most extensively studied groups within bacteria. However, for these bacteria as a whole and for all of its major subgroups (viz. Rhizobiales, Rhodobacterales, Rhodospirillales, Rickettsiales, Sphingomonadales and Caulobacterales), very few or no distinctive molecular or biochemical characteristics are known. RESULTS: We have carried out comprehensive phylogenomic analyses by means of Blastp and PSI-Blast searches on the open reading frames in the genomes of several alpha-proteobacteria (viz. Bradyrhizobium japonicum, Brucella suis, C

Brucella spp. of amphibians comprise genomically diverse motile strains competent for replication in macrophages and survival in mammalian hosts.

Twenty-one small Gram-negative motile coccobacilli were isolated from 15 systemically diseased African bullfrogs (Pyxicephalus edulis), and were initially identified as Ochrobactrum anthropi by standard microbiological identification systems. Phylogenetic reconstructions using combined molecular analyses and comparative whole genome analysis of the most diverse of the bullfrog strains verified affiliation with the genus Brucella and placed the isolates in a cluster containing B. inopinata and the other non-classical Brucella species but also revealed significant genetic differences within the
