The role of mosses in 'clean and green' phytoremediation technology: a review paper.

Phytoremediation, the practice of removing heavy metals from contaminated sites using plants, has emerged as a cost-effective, environmentally friendly green technology to restore damaged ecosystems. Mosses, in particular, demonstrate high phytoremediation potential due to their ability to accumulate heavy metals such as lead, zinc, copper, chromium, cadmium, and iron from contaminated soil and water. This review systematically examines 37 research articles published from 2000 to 2022, focusing on the on the use of mosses for phytoremediation. Moss species, such as Funaria hygrometrica Hedw, S

Antarctic moss fairy rings serve as reservoirs for plant growth-promoting bacteria.

BACKGROUND: Antarctic terrestrial vegetation and microbial communities are undergoing climate-driven changes, which in some cases have been linked to the emergence of plant diseases. Ring-shaped plant disease structures, known as fairy rings (FRs), have been observed in moss fields dominated by Sanionia uncinata. Previous studies suggest that FRs promote vegetation development through interactions with bacterial communities. This raises the possibility that the bacterial communities in Antarctic FRs may also have ecologically significant functions. To address this, we analyzed the bacterial co

Initial improvement of photosynthetic activity and desiccation tolerance in bryophytes is quickly lost in long-term elevated CO2 in vitro conditions.

Exposure of bryophytes to elevated CO2 initially stimulated photosynthetic activity, but this benefit was rapidly lost in time. Desiccation tolerance did not improve in any of the four bryophyte species studied. The majority of studies have focused on the influence of rising CO2 levels on vascular plants, while bryophytes have received less attention, despite being major contributors to biodiversity in high latitudes, to facilitate water regulation in ecosystems, and support carbon and nutrient cycling. Elevated CO2 typically results in greater carbon availability for cell processes (reparatio

Recovery from extreme desiccation enhanced by humid air and elevated CO2 in a widespread desert plant.

Global climate change, driven by anthropogenically elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), is causing fluctuations in resource availability across ecosystems. Drylands are especially vulnerable to such shifts because water limitations strongly constrain species performance and survival, with water arriving as liquid precipitation and non-rainfall water (NRW) such as fog, dew, and atmospheric water vapor (humidity). To cope with water limitation, some plants exhibit desiccation-tolerant traits that allow them to survive extended dry periods. This study examined the ecophysiological effects o

The taphonomic puzzle of Notothylacites filiformis: reinterpretation of bryophyte fossils from the Late Cretaceous of Czechia reveals the co-occurrence of hornworts and liverworts.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hornworts are rarely found in the fossil record, so each new find provides important insights regarding their evolution and diversity. Here we revisit a controversial genus, Notothylacites, described from the Late Cretaceous of Central Europe, which has liverwort morphology but bears hornwort spores. METHODS: The fossil material was originally studied in 1970 by Pacltová using pollen preparation techniques. Using a single grain method, we extracted spores from the preparation matrix, and observed them with scanning electron microscopy. For comparison, we studied spores of

Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Bryophytes Extracts in LPS-Stimulated RAW264.7 Murine Macrophages.

Bryophytes produce rare and bioactive compounds with a broad range of therapeutic potential, and many species are reported in ethnomedicinal uses. However, only a few studies have investigated their potential as natural anti-inflammatory drug candidate compounds. The present study investigates the anti-inflammatory effects of thirty-two species of bryophytes, including mosses and liverworts, on Raw 264.7 murine macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or recombinant human peroxiredoxin (hPrx1). The 70% ethanol extracts of bryophytes were screened for their potential to reduce the p

Is there any direct link between hazardous trace metals and the allantoin content in some moss species?

The accumulation of allantoin and trace metals (TMs) in nine moss species was examined after the exposure to stress conditions. Both the environmental anthropopressure effect and laboratory-simulated stress conditions were monitored. Moss samples were collected from different locations, i.e. a non-TM contaminated area, an urban area, and a metalliferous area. The effect of Cd, Pb, Hg, Ni, Zn, salinity, and an acidic environment on the allantoin content was tested. Principal component analysis was performed to reveal the relationship between samples of different origin. Large differences in the

Monitoring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons deposition in eastern Canada using moss biomonitoring: A large-scale study of spatial patterns and environmental influences.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent organic pollutants released into the atmosphere from both natural and anthropogenic sources. This study presents the first large-scale spatial assessment of atmospheric PAHs across Quebec, Canada, using passive biomonitoring with Pleurozium schreberi moss. PAH analysis was conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD), targeting 10 PAHs for spatial biomonitoring and 15 PAHs to assess the impacts of the 2023 wildfire events. Over 200 samples were collected primarily from southern Quebec, the m

Preliminary indications of water-quality-related trace-element signals in aquatic moss balls from a Patagonian lake.

Naturally formed aquatic moss balls from Laguna Parrillar, Chilean Patagonia, have been described as a bryological phenomenon, but their elemental composition has not been evaluated. This technical note provides an initial characterization of their whole-aggregate trace-element signal. Ninety moss balls were collected from the same shoreline section in 2022-2024, and concentrations of 17 elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Data were evaluated using univariate and multivariate analyses. Fe, Al, and Mn dominated the elemental profile, whereas Hg, Mo, and Cd

Disentangling climate change from air pollution effects on epiphytic bryophytes.

At the interface between atmosphere and vegetation, epiphytic floras have been largely used as indicators of air quality. The recovery of epiphytes from high levels of SO2 pollution has resulted in major range changes, whose interpretation has, however, been challenged by concomitant variation in other pollutants as well as climate change. Here, we combine historical and contemporary information on epiphytic bryophyte species distributions, climatic conditions, and pollution loads since the 1980s in southern Belgium to disentangle the relative impact of climate change and air pollution on temp

Fire severity is more sensitive to low fuel moisture content on Calluna heathlands than on peat bogs.

Moorland habitats dominated by the dwarf shrub Calluna vulgaris provide important ecosystem services. Drought is projected to intensify throughout their range, potentially leading to increased fire severity as moisture is a key control on severity. We studied the effect of low fuel moisture content (FMC) on fire severity by using 2×2m rain-out shelters prior to completing 19 experimental fires in two sites in Scotland (UK): a dry heath with thin organic soils and a raised bog with deep, saturated peat, both dominated by Calluna vulgaris. Reduced FMC of the moss and litter (M/L) layer at both s

PpLEA genes in embryophytes, instead of LEAs being angiosperm-unique.

From the earliest land plants (Bryophyta) to the highly diversified flowering plants (Angiosperm), late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) genes/proteins are consistently identified across embryophytes. LEA proteins are intrinsically disordered proteins that are spatiotemporally expressed in floral organs/fruits or specifically somatic embryogenesis among various cell types. Moreover, LEA genes are typically responsive to various environmental stressors. To disclose the multifaceted features from vegetative to productive processes, this mini-review summarizes current knowledge on PpLEA genes/protein

Neutral and ionic PFAS in coastal Antarctica: Global context, diagnostic ratios, and implications for long-range atmospheric transport.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been frequently detected in polar environments despite the absence of substantial local emissions, raising concerns about long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) and precursor-driven inputs to remote regions. This study characterized the occurrence and distribution of neutral (nPFAS) and ionic PFAS (iPFAS) in air, soil, and moss collected near King Sejong Station, Antarctica. Year-long passive air samples revealed the predominance of volatile fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) in atmosphere, accompanied by short-chain perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) an

Embryophyte-wide detection of natural Agrobacterium-mediated horizontal gene transfer reveals an ancient role for mini T-DNAs.

Agrobacterium transfers DNA into plant cells, leading to tumors, hairy roots (HR), and natural genetically modified organisms (nGMOs). Transferred DNAs (T-DNAs) from agrobacteria and T-DNA-derived cellular T-DNAs (cT-DNAs) from nGMOs vary considerably and may carry up to 15 different genes. Among these, opine synthase (ops) genes encode the synthesis of opines used as nutrients by the agrobacteria. Earlier studies predicted large numbers of naturally transformed plant species, but only few have been identified and studied so far. We therefore developed a general method to detect cT-DNAs in all

Understanding mercury accumulation in mosses of two subalpine forests in China.

The role of forest ecosystems in the global mercury (Hg) biogeochemical cycle is widely recognized; however, using litterfall as a surrogate to assess the Hg sink function of forests encounters limitations. We investigated the accumulation characteristics and influencing factors of Hg in mosses from two remote subalpine forests in southwestern China. The results indicated that there was high Hg accumulation in subalpine forest mosses, with average concentrations of 82 ± 49 ng g-1 for total mercury (THg) and 1.3 ± 0.8 ng g-1 for methylmercury (MeHg). We demonstrated that the accumulation capaci

Leaching of mercury from seal carcasses into Antarctic soils.

More than 400 seal mummies and skeletons are now mapped in the northern part of James Ross Island, Antarctica. Decomposing carcasses represent a rare source of both organic matter and associated elements for the soil. Owing to their high trophic position, seals are known to carry a significant mercury body burden. This work focuses on the extent of the mercury input from seal carcasses and shows that such carcasses represent locally significant sources of mercury and methylmercury for the environment. Mercury contents in soil samples from the surrounding areas were determined using a single-pu

Macrocylic bisbibenzyl natural products and their chemical synthesis.

Covering: 1995 to June 2011. The macrocyclic bisbibenzyl family of natural products are commonly found in liverworts and other bryophytes, though the recent isolation of riccardin C from a primrose extract has demonstrated their existence in higher flowering plants. Each has a core comprising four aromatic rings and two ethano bridges, being derived in Nature from two molecules of lunularin. Sub-classes are distinguished by the connectivity between these lunularin units, while individual natural products are distinguished by the hydroxy- and/or alkoxy-substituents decorating the core structure
