The epithelial layers of the body wall in hornerid bryozoans (Stenolaemata: Cyclostomatida).

Bryozoans are small colonial coelomates. They can be conceptualised as "origami-like" animals, composed of three complexly folded epithelial layers: epidermis of the zooidal/colonial body wall, gut epithelium and coelothelium. We investigated the general microanatomy and ultrastructure of the hornerid (Cyclostomatatida) body wall and polypide in four taxa, including three species of Hornera and one species belonging to an undescribed genus. We describe epithelia and their associated structures (e.g., ECM, cuticle) across all portions of the hornerid body wall, including the terminal membrane,

Morphology of ctenostome bryozoans: 5. Sundanella, with description of a new species from the Western Atlantic and the Multiporata concept.

Ctenostome bryozoans are a small group of gymnolaemates that comprise only a few hundred described species. Soft-tissue morphology remains the most important source for analysing morphological characters and inferring relationships within this clade. The current study focuses on the genus Sundanella, for which morphological data is scarce to almost absent. We studied two species of the genus, including one new to science, using histology and three-dimensional reconstruction techniques and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Sundanella generally has a thick, sometimes arborescent cuticle and mu

Morphology of ctenostome bryozoans: 3. Elzerina, Flustrellidra, Bockiella.

Ctenostome bryozoans are a small group of bryozoans whose soft-tissue morphology has received only little attention. The present study represents the third in a series of articles dealing with the morphology of this clade of bryozoans. The morphology of three genera of Alcyonidioidea, that is, Bockiella (Alcyonidiidae), Elzerina and Flustrellidra (both Flustrellidridae), are analyzed using histology and 3D-reconstruction techniques. The general zooidal morphology is similar and externally differs by the shape of the aperture. Zooids of Elzerina binderi are elongated in the fronto-basal axis, w

Impact of environmental conditions on the marine natural product bryostatin 1.

Marine Natural Products (MNPs), such as bryostatin 1, are exposed to a range of physical and chemical conditions through the life cycle of the host organism. These include exposure to sunlight, oxidizing and reducing agents, cation binding, and adsorption to reactive metal oxide surfaces. Using Fourier Transform-Ion Cyclotron Resonance (FT-ICR), Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-MS), UV/Vis absorbance spectroscopy, and molecular modeling, we studied the impact of UV light, TiO2, I2, and reaction with FeCl3 on the structure of bryostatin 1. Our results demonst

Structural optimization and evaluation of butenolides as potent antifouling agents: modification of the side chain affects the biological activities of compounds.

A recent global ban on the use of organotin compounds as antifouling agents has increased the need for safe and effective antifouling compounds. In this study, a series of new butenolide derivatives with various amine side chains was synthesized and evaluated for their anti-larval settlement activities in the barnacle, Balanus amphitrite. Side chain modification of butenolide resulted in butenolides 3c-3d, which possessed desirable physico-chemical properties and demonstrated highly effective non-toxic anti-larval settlement efficacy. A structure-activity relationship analysis revealed that va

Showing their true colors: a practical approach to volume rendering from serial sections.

BACKGROUND: In comparison to more modern imaging methods, conventional light microscopy still offers a range of substantial advantages with regard to contrast options, accessible specimen size, and resolution. Currently, tomographic image data in particular is most commonly visualized in three dimensions using volume rendering. To date, this method has only very rarely been applied to image stacks taken from serial sections, whereas surface rendering is still the most prevalent method for presenting such data sets three-dimensionally. The aim of this study was to develop standard protocols for

Adverse event signal extraction from cancer patients' narratives focusing on impact on their daily-life activities.

Adverse event (AE) management is important to improve anti-cancer treatment outcomes, but it is known that some AE signals can be missed during clinical visits. In particular, AEs that affect patients' activities of daily living (ADL) need careful monitoring as they may require immediate medical intervention. This study aimed to build deep-learning (DL) models for extracting signals of AEs limiting ADL from patients' narratives. The data source was blog posts written in Japanese by breast cancer patients. Secondary metabolites from marine bryozoans. A review.

Secondary metabolites from marine bryozoans are reviewed. Two ctenosome bryozoans are dealt with, one, Alcyonidium gelatinosum containing a sulfoxonium ion acting as hapten in an allergic contact dermatitis and the other, Zoobotryon verticillatum yielding bromogramines. Five cheilostome bryozoans have given rise to the isolation of unique secondary natural products. Bugula neritina is the source of the antineoplastic bryostatins and Bugula purple while Flustra foliacea have yielded an array of bromoindole alkaloids and a brominated quinoline. Chartella papyracea also have bromoindole alkaloids

Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Bioactive Compounds from Seaweeds, Bryozoans, Jellyfish, Shellfish and Peanut Worms.

Inflammation is a defense mechanism of the body in response to harmful stimuli such as pathogens, damaged cells, toxic compounds or radiation. However, chronic inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of a variety of diseases. Multiple anti-inflammatory drugs are currently available for the treatment of inflammation, but all exhibit less efficacy. This drives the search for new anti-inflammatory compounds focusing on natural resources. Marine organisms produce a broad spectrum of bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory activities. Several are considered as lead compounds for

[Some peculiarities of the relationships between parasitic copepods and their invertebrate hosts].

According to the rule of academican E. N. Pavlovskiy, any organism of host is an environment of inhabit for a parasite (Pavlovskiy, 1934). It was analysed, which "ecological niche" or microbiotop (= microhabitat) is occupied by this or that species of symbiotic (parasitic) copepods in organisms of different groups invertebrate-hosts. The assumption lying in a basis of the given analysis means that each group of hosts may give to cohabitants only certain variants of microbiotopes independently on the general morphological structure and life mode of hosts. Five types of microbiotops offered by v

Morphological and taxonomic diversity of the bryozoan genus Chaperia (Cheilostomata: Chaperiidae) in the Aotearoa New Zealand EEZ and on the southern Norfolk Ridge.

In extant literature, the bryozoan genus Chaperia Jullien, 1881 comprises 22 named species, seven of them solely fossil, with the two earliest temporal records dating from the New Zealand Oligocene. All but four of the putative extant species are confined to the Southern Hemisphere. A 2009 New Zealand checklist accepted three named indigenous Chaperia species (one of them misidentified), plus two yet-to-be named species and one other of uncertain identity. Restudy of this material, plus examination of Chaperia in new collections from throughout New Zealand's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and t

Dogger Bank itch in the eastern English Channel: a newly described geographical distribution of an old problem.

Dogger Bank itch is an allergic contact dermatitis to the (2-hydroxyethyl) dimethylsulphoxonium ion, a metabolite produced by the marine Bryozoan Alcyonidium diaphanum. The condition may become disabling in affected individuals, who are chiefly fishermen and dock labourers. It involves regions of skin directly exposed to sea water and areas where water may course. As A. diaphanum is common in the coastal waters of Britain, Ireland and neighbouring mainland Europe, it is important for dermatologists to be aware of Dogger Bank itch. Data published in 1966 suggested that 7% of trawler-men at the

Evaluation of barnacle (Crustacea: Cirripedia) colonisation on different fabrics to support the estimation of the time spent in water by human remains.

The estimation of the time since death (minimum Post Mortem Interval, minPMI) is an essential aspect of forensic investigations. This is particularly complex when a human body is found submerged, floating or beached in a marine environment. When a cadaver is found in a terrestrial environment the minPMI estimation is generally based on the presence of carrion insects. However, when a cadaver is found in an aquatic environment, a correct crime scene reconstruction is more complex and requires the consideration of the time the remains spent submerged underwater (minimum Post Mortem Submersion In

Review of bioactive secondary metabolites from marine bryozoans in the progress of new drugs discovery.

Marine bryozoans play an important role for the discovery of novel bioactive compounds among marine organisms. In this review, we summarize 164 new secondary metabolites including macrocyclic lactones, sterols, alkaloids, sphingolipids and so forth from 24 marine bryozoans in the last two decades. The structural features, bioactivity, structure-activity relationship, mechanism and strategies to address the resupply of these scarce secondary metabolites are discussed. The structural and bioactive diversity of the secondary metabolites from marine bryozoans indicated the possibility of using the

Neuroanatomy of Hyalinella punctata: Common patterns and new characters in phylactolaemate bryozoans.

Studies on the bryozoan adult nervous system employing immunocytochemical techniques and confocal laser scanning microscopy are scarce. To gain a better view into the structure and evolution of the nervous system of the Phylactolaemata, the earliest extant branch and sister taxon to the remaining Bryozoa, this work aims to characterize the nervous system of Hyalinella punctata with immunocytochemical techniques and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The cerebral ganglion is located between the anus and the pharynx and contains a lumen. Two ganglionic horns and a circum-oral nerve ring emanate

Cytotoxic Bryostatin Derivatives from the South China Sea Bryozoan Bugula neritina.

Four new macrocyclic lactones, bryostatin 21 (1) and 9-O-methylbryostatins 4, 16, and 17 (2-4), together with three known related compounds, bryostatins 4, 16, and 17 (5-7), have been isolated from an extract of the South China Sea bryozoan Bugula neritina. The structures of all compounds were unambiguously elucidated using detailed spectroscopic analysis. Structurally, the presence of a single methyl group at C-18 in compound 1 has not been observed before for known bryostatins. The isolated macrolides exhibited inhibitory effects against a small panel of human cancer cell lines.

Impact of environmental variables on fouling bryozoan species in the Eastern Aegean Sea.

Bryozoans are the major component of marine macro-fouling communities. In the study, the relations between bryozoan species and environmental variables were investigated at seven stations along the Aegean coast in August and December 2015. Constant bryozoan species in both sampling periods were Bugula neritina, Amathia verticillata, Shizoporella errata, Cryptosula pallasiana and Celleporaria brunnea. Their relationship with physico-chemical variables (Temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonium, nitrite and nitrate nitrogen, orthophosphate phosphorous, total phosphate, chlorophyll-a)

Chromosome-level haplotype-resolved genome assembly of the linguliform brachiopod Discradisca antillarum (d'Orbigny, 1845).

Brachiopods are a group of shelled, filter-feeding marine invertebrates. Though they superficially resemble bivalve mollusks, brachiopods fall within the clade Lophophorata (Brachiopoda, Bryozoa, Phoronida) and possess an abundant and diverse fossil record spanning more than 500 million years. This long evolutionary history makes Brachiopoda particularly important for understanding the evolution of the morphologically disparate superphylum Lophotrochozoa. Brachiopods also stand to provide insight into the evolution of biomineralization, as most lineages produce skeletons of calcium carbonate w

Identifying bryostatins and potential precursors from the bryozoan Bugula neritina.

The bryozoan species Bugula neritina contains the anticancer agent bryostatin. Bryostatin has been extracted from these sessile marine invertebrates since the late 1960s from the Gulf of California, Gulf of Mexico, as well as various locations on the eastern and western rims of the Pacific Ocean. In this work we are focusing on animals harvested in the Gulf of Mexico near Alligator Point (Florida). Using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) we measure the concentration of 70 elements in B. neritina, a sea squirt, and the sediment from the point of harvesting. This data has hel
