Loving-kindness moderates the association between neuroticism and anxiety symptoms among Thai older adults.

The global population is experiencing rapid aging, and the mental health needs of older adults have become an urgent public health concern, with anxiety levels becoming increasingly prevalent among older adults. In Thailand, stress and anxiety among older adults are anticipated to double in the next decade. Neuroticism, characterized by emotional instability and an impulse for negative feelings, is a significant psychological characteristic associated with anxiety. Older adults with higher neuroticism have heightened sensitivity to stress and frequently struggle with emotional regulation, henc

Wat Thamkrabok: a Buddhist drug rehabilitation program in Thailand.

Since 1959 Wat Thamkrabok, a Buddhist monastery in Thailand, has been conducting a drug addiction rehabilitation program which claims a 70% success rate. The program is known for its use of unconventional methods, such as inducing vomiting to relieve "cravings" for drugs, herbal saunas, strict discipline, an emphasis on Buddhism, and a sacred vow to never again use drugs. This is a descriptive study based on observations and interviews (mostly with foreigners) made at the monastery. While it was not possible to evaluate claims of success, there were several interesting aspects of the program w

[Phallus depictions in Bhutan].

Even in a globalized world, Bhutan is still a country which is less traveled and maintains relative remoteness. Localized in the Himalayas, the kingdom offers, besides its natural beauties, fascinating cultural sights, particularly secular and sacral architecture. For most foreigners, the omnipresence of depictions of phalli, always erected and often ejaculating on many walls of traditional houses is a stunning impression. The popularity of these displays goes back to the "Holy Madman" Drukpa Kunley (1455-1529) who made generous use of his penis to fight demons, convert women to Buddhism and mo

Epilepsy in Nepal.

This is a review of epilepsy in Nepal. Nepal is a predominantly rural country with a population of 21 million. A community-based survey in Morang district showed that the prevalence of epilepsy was 7.3 per 1,000 population. A cohort of 300 cases in Shree Birendra Military Hospital showed that neurocysticercosis was the most important etiological cause. There are seven neurologists, 10 CT scanners, three MRIs, and four EEG machines in the country. The practice of anticonvulsant use varied according to different geographical locations. The treatment gap may be in excess of 70%. The epidemiology

Letter and landscape: early Soviet plant hunting in Transbaikalia and the relocations of Tibetan medicine between environments and epistemologies.

The early decades of Soviet rule saw dramatic developments in medicine and public health. Many regions of the new state, particularly the so-called 'national peripheries', underwent extensive health reform. Vernacular medical practices, which were often embedded in religious doctrines, were to be eradicated. Paradoxically, a keen interest in alternative medical knowledge also emerged, resulting in institutionalised research in ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology and recruiting heterodox practitioners as research partners. This article discusses how Buryat Tibetan medicine of Transbaikal Buddhist

A Gift from the Buddhist Monastery: The Role of Buddhist Medical Practices in the Assimilation of the Opium Poppy in Chinese Medicine during the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

This paper aims to critically appraise the incorporation of opium poppy into medical practice in Song-dynasty China. By analysing materia medica and formularies, along with non-medical sources from the Song period, this study sheds light on the role of Chinese Buddhist monasteries in the process of incorporation of foreign plants into Chinese medicine. It argues that Buddhist monasteries played a significant role in the evolution of the use of opium poppy in Song dynasty medicine. This is because the consumption practices in Buddhist monasteries inspired substantial changes in the medical appl

Ritual Resilience through Full-Moon Meditation: Reclaiming the Sacred Value of Sojiwan Temple in a Commodified Heritage Landscape.

The commodification of cultural heritage has significantly disrupted the sacredness of religious sites in Indonesia, posing a challenge for communities seeking to preserve spiritual value within economically driven landscapes. This study focuses on Sojiwan Temple, a ninth-century Buddhist monument in Central Java, where full-moon meditation has emerged as a form of ritual resilience that reasserts spiritual authority in the face of dominant secular and touristic agendas. Using ethnographic fieldwork, in-depth interviews, and textual analysis of Buddhist canonical sources, this research examine

Nanhai Jigui Neifa Zhuan: exploration of and research on hygiene, medicine and health care knowledge in ancient India.

BACKGROUND: The famous Tang Dynasty monk Yi Jing travelled to ancient India in 671 AD, visited more than 30 regions and returned to China in 695 AD. He wrote Nanhai Jigui Neifa Zhuan, which he completed in 691 AD. It describes the basic rules, namely 'Inner Dharma' (Neifa,) that Buddhist sites and monks should follow in their daily lives. Additionally, the author provided an overview of ancient Indian Buddhist medicine, covering aetiology, diagnosis, medication, acupuncture, health preservation and other aspects, which exhibited distinct characteristics. Clinical and Laboratory Characteristics of a Tinea Capitis Outbreak Among Novice Buddhist Monks.

Sixty novice Buddhist monks with tinea capitis confirmed according to clinical presentation and mycological laboratory finding were included in this study. Mixed-type clinical presentation was observed in approximately half of all cases, together with scarring alopecia (95%) and superficial fungal skin infection at locations other than the scalp (43.3%). The major isolated organism was Trichophyton violaceum, and mixed-organism infection was found in 27 cases (45%). Slow-onset presentation and an extensive area of infection were significantly associated with mixed-type clinical presentation.

Key Tenets of Classical Buddhist Dharma Leave Space for the Practice of Abortion and are Upheld by Contemporary Japanese Buddhist Mizuko Kuyo Remembrance Rituals.

Core Buddhist principles of continuity, karmic assignment, and emphasis on separation of mind from body, permit, though do not expressly advocate for, the practice of abortion. Further, in certain contemporary contexts, Buddhist practices exist to mitigate the suffering experienced by women who have lost an unborn child, whether through abortion or miscarriage. In modern-day Japan for example, many Buddhists practice mizuko kuyō, a set of formal remembrance rituals, which provides structured support to families in their efforts to mourn, to remember the departed, and to celebrate the redirecti

The Battle of Worldviews: A Case Study of Liver Fluke Infection in Khon Kaen, Thailand.

Control efforts to reduce infection from the parasitic flatworm Opisthorchis viverrini have progressed through understanding the epidemiology of Opisthorchis viverrini, antiparasitic drug developments, technological innovations, health education promoting cooking of fish, and improved hygienic defecation. Yet the problem persists. The case study method was used to examine the fundamental cause of the liver fluke infection problem. Evidence shows that the liver fluke-infected population does not care about living a long life. For them, suffering and death are simply a part of life, and expected

The concept of neurasthenia and its treatment in Japan.

The term neurasthenia, which had been widely used in Japan before the Second World War, came to be replaced by the term neurosis thereafter. With this change in terminology, there seems to have been a shift in the popular ideas of minor psychiatric disorders towards a more psychological view. Unlike in the West where psychoanalysis was a major contributing factor, in Japan it was Shoma Morita who contributed to this change by questioning the somatic basis of conditions then diagnosed as neurasthenia and by developing the concept shinkeishitsu in the early 1920's, rejecting the concept of neura

"Intelligence Running Wild": Edward Podvoll (1936-2003) and the Unfolding of the "Contemplative Psychotherapy" Project.

This paper explores the origins and development of the "contemplative psychotherapy" project in the United States, emerging around psychoanalyst Edward Podvoll and the intellectual environment at Naropa University during the 1970s and 1980s. It situates Podvoll's work within the broader dialogue between Buddhism and Western psychotherapy, highlighting how his contributions shed light on this dynamic and complex encounter. The paper begins by outlining Podvoll's psychiatric and psychoanalytic background, then examines the establishment of contemplative psychotherapy at Naropa, and finally discu

Calming the mind: Healing after mass atrocity in Cambodia.

After catastrophic events in which people's survival has been threatened, as happened during the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia 1975-1979, some continue to suffer from painful mental symptoms. Surveys carried out in Cambodia based on Western diagnostic categories have found a high prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety symptoms in the population. This study explored Cambodian approaches to healing trauma, examining the ways in which Cambodians appeal to elements of Buddhism in their efforts to calm their minds, situating this mode of coping in the context o

A longitudinal study of psychosocial changes among Thai adolescents participating in a Buddhist ordination program for novices.

Little is known about the effects of intense spiritual practice among teenage youth. In the present study, 170 adolescent males in Thailand were assessed regarding the immediate and long-term behavioral, emotional, and devotional consequences of participation in a six-week Buddhist monastic program. An additional 114 males of equivalent age, who were assessed in regard to changes following a demanding extracurricular English language course, served as controls. Their parents' perceptions were also examined. The results indicated that the changes reported by the youths in the ordination group w

[Introduction of Indian medicine into China in the Wei-Jin-Southern-Northern dynasties as interpreted by beriberi].

Since the sea route between China and all countries in the Western Region was unimpeded, many Buddhist monks came to China. Some of them settled in Lingnan Region. Some of the Northerners moved southward into Lingnan Region and contracted beriberi which were cured by Indian monks. The author explores the importation of Indian medcine through analysis of beriberi as an example.

Assisted chanting and Buddhist end-of-life care in contemporary China.

OBJECTIVES: The intersection of medicine and Buddhist spiritual care in institutional end-of-life settings remains underexplored, particularly regarding post-death rituals. This qualitative study examines how Buddhist assisted chanting (zhunian, ) - a 24-hour continuous recitation of Amitabha Buddha's name - functions as a model of holistic end-of-life care that addresses the spiritual, emotional, psychological, and relational dimensions of dying. METHODS: Semi-structured, in-person interviews were conducted with 34 participants (18 volunteers, 8 patients, and 8 family caregivers) at the Lotu
