An engineering-informed voting ensemble framework for rapid seismic risk screening of reinforced concrete structures.

Rapid evaluation of existing building stocks is essential for reducing earthquake-related disaster risk, particularly in seismically vulnerable cities such as Gaziantep, Türkiye. However, commonly used assessment approaches are either time-consuming or rely on simplified linear models that fail to capture the complex relationship between seismic demand and building characteristics. This study proposes a safety-first ensemble data-driven screening framework for rapid post-earthquake building damage assessment, combining XGBoost, LightGBM, and CatBoost classifiers via soft voting. The framework

Decoding the Codes: A Comprehensive Guide to Interventional Pulmonology Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Coding and Billing-Part 1: Compensation and Context of CPT Codes Effecting Interventional Pulmonology.

Interventional pulmonology is a young and growing field; this necessitates an understanding of billing, coding, and documentation rules. Interventional pulmonologists may not appreciate these intricacies. Advocating for resources to benefit patients with administrators, insurance companies, and others requires understanding these principles. This series of 4 articles will review the fundamental and advanced aspects of billing, coding, documentation, and programmatic building of an interventional pulmonology program. Part 1 will review the fundamentals of billing, coding, and reimbursement. Par

From Pandemic Response to Kill the Clipboard: Patient-Controlled Sharing of Health Data Using International Patient Summary (IPS) and QR codes.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in interoperability, patient-supplied medical histories commonly use paper-based forms. Dissatisfaction with this inefficiency has led to the "Kill the Clipboard" initiative from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to advance digital alternatives. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, patient-controlled vaccination record sharing demonstrated that Quick Response (QR) codes and digital data standards provide an effective option. Building on this, several nations are using three standards to securely view and exchange medical data: Fast He

Gait features of dystonia in cerebral palsy.

AIM: To determine the features cited by motor phenotyping experts when identifying dystonia in people with cerebral palsy (CP). METHOD: Dystonia identification in CP, particularly when comorbid with spasticity, can be difficult. The dystonia diagnostic criterion standard remains subjective visual identification by expert consensus. For this qualitative study, we conducted an inductive thematic analysis of consensus-building discussions between three pediatric movement disorder physicians as they identified the presence or absence of dystonia in gait videos of 40 participants with spastic CP a

Single-trabecula building block for large-scale finite element models of cancellous bone.

Recent development of high-resolution imaging of cancellous bone allows finite element (FE) analysis of bone tissue stresses and strains in individual trabeculae. However, specimen-specific stress/strain analyses can include effects of anatomical variations and local damage that can bias the interpretation of the results from individual specimens with respect to large populations. This study developed a standard (generic) 'building-block' of a trabecula for large-scale FE models. Being parametric and based on statistics of dimensions of ovine trabeculae, this building block can be scaled for t

An examination of adolescents who were and were not exposed to "Teens Stopping AIDS": reaching the hard-to-reach.

Teens Stopping AIDS (TSA) was an HIV prevention project in Sacramento, California, that involved coalitions of volunteers in designing and launching a social marketing intervention. Mounted in 15 zip codes where teen sexually transmitted disease (STD) and pregnancy rates were high, TSA delivered HIV prevention messages for one year through various communication channels (e.g., radio spots, posters, skills-building workshops). Sixty-seven percent of 521 sexually active adolescents surveyed in a random sample phone interview reported exposure to TSA. To inform future refinements in the intervent

Toward a theoretical understanding of young female cancer survivors' decision-making about family-building post-treatment.

PURPOSE: Family-building after gonadotoxic treatment often requires in vitro fertilization, surrogacy, or adoption, with associated challenges such as uncertain likelihood of success, high costs, and complicated laws regulating surrogacy and adoption. This study examined adolescent and young adult female (AYA-F) survivors' experiences and decision-making related to family-building after cancer. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews explored fertility and family-building themes (N = 25). Based on an a priori conceptual model, hypothesis coding and grounded theory coding methods guided qualitativ

The cognitive map in humans: spatial navigation and beyond.

The 'cognitive map' hypothesis proposes that brain builds a unified representation of the spatial environment to support memory and guide future action. Forty years of electrophysiological research in rodents suggest that cognitive maps are neurally instantiated by place, grid, border and head direction cells in the hippocampal formation and related structures. Here we review recent work that suggests a similar functional organization in the human brain and yields insights into how cognitive maps are used during spatial navigation. Specifically, these studies indicate that (i) the human hippoc

Design for Storm Surge Flooding Adaptation: Facilitating Emergency Evacuation with Adaptive Landscape Form-Based Codes.

Lack of consensus and funding led to a focus on building retrofits after storm surge flooding and collective inaction for undertaking cross-jurisdictional adaptation pathways planning. Using Seabrook, TX, United States, as a test case, this paper demonstrates the feasibility of using design games (participatory community visioning and design processes) to develop consensus-based, performance-driven, form-based codes from an adaptive landscape framework to facilitate emergency evacuation during storm surge flooding. The framework provides bottom-up mechanisms to enhance the sizes, coverages, qu

New regulations on water hygiene. Have you applied them?

1. New legislation asks for a named manager to be responsible for water hygiene in buildings. 2. Two reports outline what is required. One, A Code of Practice, lays down a management framework. The other, a Guidance Note HS(G)/70 gives useful background information and proposes in detail what is expected. Valuable practical suggestions for existing plant are given too. 3. Every building should by now have a written risk analysis together with a description of the actions planned to minimise the risk of legionellosis (legionnaires disease or Pontiac fever). 4. Every building should by now have

Development of the Social Housing of Ontario (SHO) Registry by health region: a platform for health research with the social housing population.

INTRODUCTION: Social housing plays a critical role in addressing housing inequality and promoting well-being. This paper examines the creation of a registry of social housing sites across all six Ontario Health (OH) regions. METHODS: For all 47 housing service providers in Ontario, social housing address, provider type, and building type were extracted from their website or from documents provided by the housing organization. The Registry included rent-geared-to-income housing with unique or minimally shared postal codes. Descriptive statistics were analyzed for the housing site characteristi

Impact of Climate Change on Indoor Air Quality: A Review.

Climate change can affect the indoor environment due to heat and mass transfers between indoor and outdoor environments. To mitigate climate change impacts and adapt buildings to the changing environment, changes in building characteristics and occupants' behavior may occur. To characterize the effects of climate change on indoor air quality (IAQ), the present review focused on four aspects: (1) experimental and modeling studies that relate IAQ to future environmental conditions, (2) evolution of indoor and outdoor air concentrations in the coming years with regard to temperature rise, (3) cli

A Gaussian-plume based Monte Carlo method for calculating radiation dose in the near field of buildings.

A Monte Carlo (MC) programme was written using the dose point kernel method to calculate doses in the roof zone of a building from nearby releases of radioactive gases. A Gaussian Plume Model (GPM) was parameterised to account for near-field building effects on plume spread and reflection from the roof. Rooftop recirculation zones and building-generated plume spread effects were accounted in a novel Dual Gaussian Plume (DGP) formulation used with the MC model, which allowed for the selection of angle of approach flow, plume release height in relation to the building and position of the release

Strategic health policy and health system resilience in protracted crisis settings: policymaker perspectives from Yemen.

BACKGROUND: Health system resilience is often described through the World Health Organization building blocks, yet in protracted crises it depends on whether governance, financing, workforce, information systems, service delivery, and accountability can convert crisis response into institutional reform. OBJECTIVE(S): This study examines how far Yemen's health system responses to prolonged conflict, economic decline, disease outbreaks, and COVID-19 progressed beyond absorptive and adaptive resilience toward transformative resilience, and how strategic health policy across the building blocks s

Resilience building discourse in online spaces: A comparative analysis of user statements following the disclosure of a break in alcohol abstinence.

This study investigates statements made by individuals who either disclose having experienced a break in alcohol abstinence or provide a first-level response to such disclosures. An average month of public Reddit data were examined, resulting in 193 posts and 1238 responses. Post statements were binarily considered according to eight a priori categories, primarily guided by the communication resilience process scale (CRPS; Wilson et al., 2021). Coded response posts were collapsed into sets corresponding to initial posts, facilitating the saturation comparison of resilience building statements
