[Dynamics of bulimia disorders in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa].

Thirty-three female patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) with bulimia disorders and 54 with bulimia nervosa (BN) were studied. The analysis of clinical presentations and dynamics of bulimia disorders in these groups revealed the similarity of types of <<purging>> behavior. At the same time, NA differs by the absence of genuine binge attacks characteristic of the patients with BN. Psychopathological basis of the <<purging>> behavior in AN seems to be dysmorphophobic, anxiety, hypochondriac disorders as well as insufficient criticism of a patient's state in the absence of pronounced affective dis

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

No definitive therapy exists for anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN). Nevertheless, biologic and psychologic research into these disorders has increased over the last decade. We examine the various drugs available for treatment. Advances in pharmacotherapy for AN have been modest and have reflected efforts either to stimulate hunger and weight gain or to control complications of the starvation process. Food remains the "drug" of choice. Antidepressants have been found to be beneficial in the treatment of BN. The meaning of this in the context of a relation between BN and mood disorde

Bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia and bulimia nervosa are aetiologically distinct diseases with different treatments. Though it was described more recently, bulimia nervosa occurs more commonly. Accurate diagnosis and early treatment should reduce the mortality of both conditions.

Bulimia nervosa: friend or foe? The pros and cons of bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study was to use a qualitative approach to investigate the attitude of people with bulimia nervosa (BN) to their illness. METHOD: Patients with BN were asked to write two letters to their bulimia, one addressing it as a friend and the other addressing it as an enemy. We used a coding scheme to classify themes in letters of people with anorexia nervosa (AN) to group together themes expressed by those with BN. We revised the coding scheme to include themes that were not present in the letters of people with AN. RESULTS: There were both similarities and differe

Adolescent bulimia nervosa.

Onset of bulimia nervosa (BN) typically occurs in adolescence and is frequently accompanied by medical and psychiatric sequelae that may have detrimental effects on adolescent development. Potentially serious medical consequences and high comorbid rates of mood disorders and suicidality underscore the need for early recognition and effective treatments. Research among adolescents with BN has lagged behind that of adults, although evidence is accumulating to support the efficacy of family-based interventions and cognitive behavioral treatments that are adapted for use with adolescent population

Treating Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa.

Research on the treatment of eating disorders is a relatively new field, dating back approximately 20 years (Peterson & Mitchell, 1999). The purpose of this article is to describe the most widely used treatments for anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) and review the existing literature on the effectiveness of the identified treatments. Specifically, this article examines the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy, family therapy, interpersonal therapy, and pharmacotherapy in the treatment of AN and BN. Each of the reviewed treatment modalities has some level of effectiveness,

Adiponectin in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

To study the role of adiponectin, a novel adipocyte-specific secreted protein, on the pathophysiology of eating disorders, circulating levels of fasting adiponectin, leptin, insulin, and glucose were measured in 31 female patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and in 11 with bulimia nervosa. Hormone levels were compared with 16 age-matched, normal body weight controls, six healthy constitutionally thin subjects, and nine obese subjects. Moreover, changes in levels were reevaluated after nutritional treatment and weight gain in 13 patients with AN. Serum adiponectin concentrations in AN and bulimi

A review of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Eating disorders remain an important health care problem for clinicians working with children and adolescents. Although the cause of these illnesses remains obscure, information about the effectiveness of different forms of treatment is available to guide the clinician. Individuals involved in the treatment of such patients should be aware of the means of diagnosing the conditions, the common complications of both anorexia and bulimia, the management of these, and the indications for specific treatment modalities. Although the outcome is variable, effective treatment delivered early in the cou

The endocrinology of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Considerable evidence exists of hypothalamic dysfunction in patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. This dysfunction is reflected in disturbances of endocrine function including abnormalities of gonadotropin, growth hormone, and corticotropin-releasing hormone secretion. Whereas these disturbances are generally reversed with nutritional rehabilitation and weight restoration, it is not evident to what extent nutritional factors are the primary etiology or whether they unmask an otherwise existing but compensated central disturbance. Similarly, endocrine disturbances may be a final c

[Stealing in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa].

Only recently stealing behaviour has been noticed as a symptom of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Reviewing our sample of 63 patients we discuss the incidence and motivation of kleptomania. In 24% of our patients stealing behaviour was reported which is a definitely high rate compared to literature. Among the intentions for stealing behaviour we found: Stealing as conversion of revenge, self-assertiveness compensation of binge-eating or stealing as achievement. The differential motivation of stealing should be considered in legal consequences.

Long-term fluoxetine treatment of bulimia nervosa. Fluoxetine Bulimia Nervosa Research Group.

BACKGROUND: A large collaborative 8-week study has shown fluoxetine to be effective and safe in treating patients with bulimia nervosa. The present study evaluated fluoxetine over 16 weeks. METHOD: Fifteen US out-patient psychiatry clinics conducted a double-blind parallel study in men and women with DSM-III-R bulimia nervosa (483 patients entered, 398 randomised [3:1 ratio, fluoxetine 60 mg/day or placebo], 225 completed). Outcome measures included change in vomiting and binge-eating episodes per week. Eating Disorder Inventory, Clinical Global Impressions and Patient's Global Impression. R

[Pharmacotherapy for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa].

Psychotherapy is the treatment of choice for both anorexia nervosa and for bulimia nervosa. However, many patients are also treated by pharmaceutical drugs. For the clinician it is difficult to choose pharmacotherapy, because the drugs may not be licensed, because of pharmacodynamic problems due to underweight or purging behaviour, or because of comorbidity. The present review summarises the current knowledge on pharmacotherapy for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa considering the available guidelines. In general, the knowledge based on studies is insufficient for anorexia nervosa. Up to no

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: An appraisal.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are eating disorders characterized by an aberrant pattern of eating behavior, relentless pursuit of thinness, an intense fear about weight gain and an altered perception of body shape. The pathobiology of eating disorders is complex. Several social, psychological and developmental phenomena are proposed to contribute to the etiology of eating disorders. The role of neuropeptide Y, corticotropin releasing hormone and leptin has also been investigated to understand the pathogenesis of eating disorders. However, most of the neuropeptide alterations n

[Treatment of bulimia nervosa].

Many young women and also men are constantly dissatisfied with their body. In some cases the discontent with one's own body and the resulting restrictive eating behaviour can predetermine the path to bulimia nervosa. This article summarizes the treatment options and their respective evidence for bulimia nervosa. Apart from the choice of treatment setting, psychotherapeutic treatment measures and the role of psychopharmacologic drugs for the treatment of bulimia nervosa are discussed.
