OBJECTIVE: Bunionette or 'tailor's bunion' is a deformity of the fifth ray, which comes along with a metatarsus quintus valgus and a varus deformity of the fifth toe with subluxation of the metatarsophalangeal joint. A minimally invasive osteotomy of the fifth metatarsal without internal fixation using burrs is an increasingly used alternative for symptomatic tailor's bunion deformity. Similar to open surgery procedures the type of osteotomy complies with the underlying pathology. Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) procedures allow comprehensive treatment of various types of tailor's bunion def

In this review paper, we present the common etiology, presentation, diagnosis, and management of the following three common bunion formations: dorsal bunion, tailor's bunion, and hallux valgus (HV). Bunions are common pathologies that present to a variety of clinics, so it is important for providers to have a base understanding of these in order to provide the best care to patients. Many of these bunion formations have a variety of causes which allow providers to manage them before surgical intervention is required. The aim of this review paper is to bring attention and expanded insight on the

Bunionette deformities have been treated as an analog of hallux valgus, and the surgical techniques are similar. Most commonly anteroposterior image is evaluated pre- and postoperatively. To our knowledge, only one study has evaluated changes on the lateral radiograph and no study has evaluated changes in rotation of the fifth metatarsal head postoperatively. In percutaneous bunionette correction using a burr for osteotomy, shortening of the fifth metatarsal and elevation of the metatarsal head are inevitable. Without fixation, there is also a possibility of rotational change to the metatarsal

Complications of lesser metatarsal surgery are the result of inappropriate procedure choice, poor surgical technique, inadequate fixation, or a lack of patient compliance. Postoperative complications include transfer lesions, malunion, delayed union, nonunion, displacement of fixation devices, and resultant digital contracture. Despite good results with treatment of tailor's bunion deformities, results of osteotomies of the central three metatarsals are inconsistent. Conservative care is preferred for treatment of plantar hyperkeratoses.

Pathologic conditions of the metatarsophalangeal joints comprise the majority of painful conditions of the forefoot. Clinical manifestations commonly include hallux valgus (bunion), bunionette ("tailor's bunion"), and metatarsalgia. Conservative treatment remains the hallmark of initial management of these disorders. Conservative measures emphasize the adequate accommodation of the forefoot within the toe box of the shoe and the even distribution of plantar pressures by various metatarsal pads or bars and soft insoles. Numerous and sometimes controversial surgical procedures have been develope

A symptomatic bunionette (tailor's bunion) is a painful bony prominence on the lateral side of the fifth metatarsal head, often associated with an inflamed thickened adventitious bursa and hypertrophic keratoses or calluses. The diagnosis is based on the presence of pain that is most often caused by pressure from footwear. The purpose of this essay is to illustrate the radiographic abnormalities of bunionettes and useful angular measurements as they relate to the preoperative evaluation of symptomatic bunionette deformity.

Bunionette deformity, historically known as tailor's bunion, is a forefoot protuberance laterally, dorsolaterally, or plantarlaterally along the fifth metatarsal head. Although bunionette deformity has been compared to hallux valgus deformity, it is likely due to a multifactorial, anatomic interplay between fifth metatarsal bony morphology and forefoot soft-tissue imbalance. Friction generated between the bony prominence, soft tissue, and associated constrictive footwear can result in keratosis, inflammation, pain, and ulceration. Symptomatic bunionettes are usually responsive to nonsurgical m

The bunionette, or tailor's bunion, is a lateral prominence of the fifth metatarsal head. Most commonly, bunionettes are the result of a widened 4-5 intermetatarsal angle with associated varus of the metatarsophalangeal joint. When symptomatic, these deformities often respond to nonsurgical treatment methods, such as wider shoes and padding techniques. When these methods are unsuccessful, surgical treatment is based on preoperative radiographs and associated lesions, such as hyperkeratoses. In rare situations, a simple lateral eminence resection is appropriate; however, the risk of recurrence

A proximal basal chevron osteotomy was carried out on 20 patients (22 feet) with a Tailor's bunion deformity. The follow-up was of a minimum of 3 years for all patients. Direct surgery on the fifth metatarsophalangeal joint for bunionette treatment has often been unsuccessful and there have been recurrences due to metatarsophalangeal instability. Basal osteotomy is therefore preferred. The patients were satisfied. The intermetatarsal 4-5 angle was noticeably reduced. There were no postoperative complications and no recurrences. The fifth metatarsophalangeal joint was corrected despite the abse

The authors discuss the use of silicone implants for the correction of tailor's bunion deformity. A surgical procedure still in use, resection of the fifth metatarsal head, may result in complications such as transfer lesion, plantar spur formation of the metatarsal stump with an associated plantar hyperkeratotic lesion, and fifth digit retraction. They discuss a case in which the patient was suffering from a painful lesion under the fifth metatarsal head. He had undergone surgery for a similar condition 7 years previously. Dr. Petrich and Dr. Dull discuss the use of the implant and the surgic

A 5-year retrospective review of a nonfixated oblique osteotomy of the fifth metatarsal for repair of tailor's bunion was performed at the Podiatry Hospital of Pittsburgh. Subjective and objective analysis of 38 osteotomies were evaluated in 22 patients. Incidence of complications, transfer of lesions, and recurrence of the deformity were determined. Preoperative and 5-year postoperative radiographs were analyzed as to the effectiveness of this procedure in changing the intermetatarsal angle, lateral deviation angle, and the sagittal plane elevation of the fifth metatarsal head. While patient

Hallux valgus and bunionette (Tailor's bunion) deformities are debilitating forefoot deformities that may occur together. Successful outcomes of surgery for either pathology have been well-described; however, the literature is sparce on outcomes of patients undergoing simultaneous surgery for both deformities. Between 2007 and 2018, 429 patients underwent a scarf-Akin osteotomy, and 20 patients underwent simultaneous bunionette surgery. Propensity score matching was used to match the scarf + bunionette group in a 1:2 ratio to a corresponding scarf only group using logistic regression. Their ha

The bunionette, or tailor's bunion, is a painful osseous prominence on the lateral aspect of the head of the fifth metatarsal. This prominence occurs in many individuals but seldom causes symptoms. Orthotic devices may be useful if a symptomatic bunionette results from excessive pronation of the subtalar joint. Operative management to decrease the width of the foot and the osseous prominence is indicated when nonoperative treatment can no longer control symptoms and when the patient has special demands, particularly in sports. A proximal osteotomy is able to correct most deformities. A distal

Fifth metatarsal shaft osteotomy has demonstrated efficacy for bunionette. We adapted screwless 1st metatarsal scarf osteotomy to the 5th ray. The technique consists in short osteotomy, translation and diaphyseal bone-suture. We report the first 25 operated feet, with mean AOFAS score 58.4 preoperatively and 94.9 postoperatively at a mean 25 months' follow-up. These results were comparable to reported data, whatever the deformity.

Introduction. Bunionette is a deformity of the fifth metatarsal in which there is a painful lateral bony prominence of the distal region of this bone caused by various anatomical and biomechanical changes. The aim of this study is to report on a minimally invasive technique without the use of hardware to treat these deformities. Methods. This is a case series of 18 patients, 25 feet, who underwent bunionette percutaneous surgical treatment. All patients answered the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scale and the visual analogue pain scale (VAS) preoperatively and at the last

PURPOSE: The representation of anatomical variations in Renaissance art offers a unique opportunity to explore the historical perception of normality and deformity. This study aims to analyse a previously undescribed anatomical feature in the marble statue of Adam (c. 1490-1495) by Tullio Lombardo.
METHODS: A detailed visual and morphological analysis of the statue was performed, focusing on the lateral aspect of the forefoot. The observed features were compared with current clinical descriptions of bunionette deformity and interpreted within the broader context of Renaissance anatomical repr

A brief review of pedal anatomy and the mechanisms enabling feet to function as organs of locomotion is presented. The importance of the subtalar joint is emphasized. Four major abnormalities disturbing normal foot function are noted, and the most commonly encountered of these alterations, rearfoot varus, is discussed in some detail. A series of pedal abnormalities in rearfoot varus occurs because in the foot's attempt to overcome its imbalance, it pronates excessively and causes development of callus, corn, hallux valgus, and even ingrown toenail. Haglund's deformity, soft corn, and tailor's

BACKGROUND: Treatment of tailor's bunion is largely conservative. For severe or refractory cases surgical intervention is necessary. The aim of this study is to evaluate a percutaneous technique for correcting such bunionette deformities.
METHODS: Twenty-one procedures were performed on 20 patients using a percutaneous technique. Patients were scored using the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) Lesser Toe Metatarsophalangeal-Interphalangeal Scale.
RESULTS: No wound healing problems, infections, non-unions or mal-unions occurred. Functional assessments revealed very good result

There is rapidly growing interest in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) of the foot and ankle. Technological advances, specifically with the advent of low-speed high-torque burrs, have enabled the expansion of MIS techniques. Accordingly, there is growing literature reporting excellent outcomes of MIS surgery to address many different pathologies of the foot and ankle. MIS techniques are particularly useful for conducting percutaneous osteotomies and bony débridement. These can be used to address bunion deformity, hammertoes, metatarsalgia, bunionette deformity, bone spurs, and hindfoot deformit

BACKGROUND: Bunionette deformity is described as a painful bony prominence on the lateral aspect of the fifth metatarsal head. The present study prospectively assessed the clinical, functional, and radiographic outcomes of sliding distal metatarsal minimally invasive osteotomy (S-DMMO) used in a large series of patients with a midterm follow-up period.
METHODS: From December 2015 to December 2018, we evaluated 74 feet (57 patients). Radiologic (4-to-5 intermetatarsal angle, fifth metatarsophalangeal angle, the fifth metatarsal head width, lateral deviation angle, fifth metatarsal length, medi
