BACKGROUND: Synovial chondromatosis is a disease originating from the synovium and characterized by the presence of metaplastic cartilaginous nodules in synovial cavities. The exact prevalence of synovial chondromatosis remains unknown, and the involvement of the shoulder joint is very rare. Synovial chondromatosis accompanied by subluxation of the humeral head without a history of trauma is rarely encountered, and to our knowledge, no published reports describe this condition.
CASE SUMMARY: We present two cases of synovial chondromatosis in the shoulder joint, accompanied by subluxation of t

Following arthroscopic meniscectomy a 41-year old patient developed an external synovial fistula in the area of the central joint approach with a communication to the deep intrapatellar bursa. Anatomical preparations performed on 20 knee joints revealed extraordinary variations in the dimension of the infrapatellar bursa with a mean longitudinal diameter of 24 mm and a transversal diameter of 38 mm. The distance between bursa and the distal margin of the patella measured 15 to 39 mm. These topographic conditions lead to the assumption that the bursa is exposed to iatrogenic lesion by placing a

OBJECTIVE: To introduce an arthroscopic technique in managing recurrent dislocation of the patella and its clinical results.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with recurrent patellar dislocation were reviewed, including 3 males and 13 females. The average age was 17.6 years old (ranged from 14 to 32 years). The patients suffering from patellar sub-luxation averaged 18.5 months (ranged from 6 to 23 months)before operation. These patients were treated with lateral patellar retinacular release outside the synovial bursa of knee joint and medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction using the semitendin

In a prospective study we examined lateral radiographs of the knee joint before and after flexion exercises, in 300 consecutive arthrograms. We use the following definitions: (a) a popliteal or Baker's cyst is a clinical diagnosis and implicates a palpable popliteal mass, mostly in adults; (b) a communicating bursa is the semimembranoso-gastrocnemial bursa (s.g. bursa) communicating with the knee joint which is visible in the lateral arthrogram of the knee. It appears that the communicating s.g. bursa is more often present with knee pathology. The bursa has no other clinical or therapeutic sig

BACKGROUND: Although polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is a very common rheumatic inflammatory disease, current insight into the pathobiology of PMR is limited and largely based on studies in blood. We investigated T helper 1 (TH1) and T helper 17 (TH17) cell responses in blood, synovial fluid and bursa tissue of patients with PMR.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 18 patients with new-onset PMR and 32 healthy controls. Synovial fluid was aspirated from the inflamed shoulder bursae or biceps tendon sheath of 13 patients. Ultrasound-guided biopsies of the subacromial-subdelto

Osteochondroma is a common tumor of the bone and can be complicated by adventitial bursa formation and malignant transformation of the cartilaginous cap. Synovial chondromatosis formation within these bursae is extremely rare and can be confused with malignant transformation of the osteochondroma cap to a chondrosarcoma. We describe a case of extra-articular synovial chondromatosis formation several years following osteochondroma resection. Cartilage nodule formation within the bursal synovial lining and proliferation of cartilage debris shed from the cartilaginous cap during surgery or biopsy

The retro-calcaneal bursa presents a synovial and a non-synovial osseous part of variable dimensions. Studies objectively measuring the variability of the size of this osseous bursal surface cannot be found in literature. The objective of this study was to investigate (i) the dimension variability of the bony part of the bursa and (ii) the relationship of this surface to other articulating areas of the calcaneus. A digital planimeter was used to measure the bursae (n=86) and other articular surface areas of the calcaneus and statistically compared with ANOVA and correlation estimations. The os

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cytomorphology of bursal cyst and assess the efficacy of aspiration cytology in its diagnosis and treatment.
STUDY DESIGN: Nineteen cases of bursal cyst seen over four years were studied. Material was obtained by fine needle aspiration. The smears were stained with May-Grünwald-Giemsa stain and hematoxylin and eosin.
RESULTS: Eight cysts were in the popliteal fossa, 4 on the elbow, 3 on the knee, 2 on the shoulder and 2 in the calf. Gelatinous material was aspirated in all the cases. In some cases the cyst collapsed after aspiration. The key diagnostic features wer

Osteochondroma is the most common benign bone tumor, but it rarely arises from the scapula. Scapulothoracic bursitis is quite rare and osteochondroma is one of the unusual causes of this condition. Synovial chondromatosis may occur extremely uncommonly in this bursa. We reported an unusual case of scapulothoracic bursitis with synovial chondromatosis, which is caused by osteochondroma. To the best of our knowledge, there is no defined chondromatosis in the scapulothoracic bursa secondary to scapular osteochondroma in the literature.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the presence of subclinical cranial nuchal bursitis and characterize its histopathologic features and association with Borrelia burgdorferi.
METHODS: This was a prospective descriptive cadaver study on a convenience population of horses in a B burgdorferi-endemic region (15 horses: 5 geldings and 10 mares of various breeds; 4 to 29 years old). Horses without history or clinical signs of cranial nuchal bursitis underwent euthanasia and tissue donation. Cranial nuchal bursa, synovial fluid, and nuchal ligament were collected postmortem. The bursa and ligament were eval

Primary synovial osteochondromatosis is an unusual condition, which generally involves otherwise normal joints. Joints commonly affected in descending order of frequency are knee, hip, glenohumeral joint, elbow and ankle, though any articulation may be involved. Synovial osteochondromatosis has been also encountered in tendon sheaths and periarticular bursa. We report a case with the clinical findings, radiographic features, surgical and histological data of primary subacromial-subdeltoid bursa synovitis. X-ray radiographs of the right glenohumeral joint as well as CT and MRI of the right shou

Hypertrophic bursopathy is a term used to describe the massive synovial proliferation occasionally seen in the bursae of patients with arthritis. Involvement of the subacromial-subdeltoid (SA-SD) bursa in adults in uncommon, and it is still rarer in children. It may simulate synovial proliferation or fluid within the adjacent shoulder joint. Sonography clearly shows the location and nature of the soft-tissue swelling. Two cases of this entity in children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis are described, one with a uniquely severe sonographic picture.

A case of chronic, nonspecific synovial inflammation presenting as a mass in the pes anserine bursa is demonstrated by MRI. The lesion was well demarcated and surrounded by a low intensity rim. On spin echo images it was homogeneous and of intermediate signal intensity, whereas on T2-weighted images it showed scattered areas of high signal producing a heterogeneous pattern. It is contrasted with a typical example of acute pes anserine bursitis, presenting as simple fluid within the bursa. The differential considerations vary accordingly between the acute and chronic forms of pes anserine bursi

Diffusion of drugs injected into the distal interphalangeal joint or the navicular (podotrochlear) bursa can influence diagnosis and treatment of foot pain. Previous anatomical and radiographic studies of the communication between these synovial structures have produced conflicting results and did not identify the location of any communication if present. This anatomic study aimed to assess the presence and site of communication between the distal interphalangeal joint and the navicular bursa in the horse by computed tomography arthrography. Sixty-six pairs of cadaver forelimbs were injected w

A bursa is an extra-articular sac that may communicate with a joint and functions to decrease friction between tendons and either bone or skin. Bursae can be classified as native and non-native (adventitious) bursae. The native bursae are lined with a synovial membrane and occur at predictable anatomical sites; knowledge of these normal structures can help distinguish them from other pathological entities. An adventitious bursa can form at sites of friction rather than at predictable anatomical sites, but otherwise have imaging features similar to native bursae. Bursal distention can occur fro
