We examined the effects on dominant lethality, the incidence of fetal abnormalities and tumour incidence in surviving offspring of acute and subchronic exposure of male mice by inhalation to the industrial monomer, 1,3-butadiene. A review of the literature and an update that is in progress of a previous retrospective cohort mortality study of the styrene-1,3-butadiene industry are discussed. The follow-up has now been extended from April 1, 1976, through December 31, 1981, for plant B and December 31, 1982, for plant A. The person-years at risk of death have gone from 34,187 to 43,341 in plant A and from 19,742 to 26,314 in plant B. In industry, the two important nitrile starting materials, adiponitrile and 2-methylglutaronitrile, are primarily manufactured through the well-known DuPont process, which consists of a tandem sequence including first hydrocyanation, isomerization and second hydrocyanation. Epidemiological studies of 1,3-butadiene have suggest that exposures to humans are associated with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). CML has a well-documented association with ionizing radiation, but reports of associations with chemical exposures have been questioned. Exposure to high concentrations of butadiene has been shown to cause cancer among exposed workers. The concentrations of benzene and 1,3-butadiene in urban, suburban, and rural sites of the U.K. were investigated across 20 years (2000-2020) to assess the impacts of pollution control strategies. This study presents data on the use of shungite ore (the Bakyrchik deposit, Kazakhstan) and its concentrate as fillers in elastomer composites based on nitrile butadiene rubber.
